Marvelous Scenic Walks Near London
There are plenty of walking routes in London. If you fancy something a bit more rural, then the green and pleasant land has plenty to offer.
Goring Gap and the Thames Path
If you’re in the mood for a gentle rural walk, the Thames Path is far from boring. The 5-mile footpath follows the curve of the river, winding past wildflower meadows (草地).
Post-walk pub: Pangbourne’s seventeenth-century pub The Swan serves high-end dishes. Bag a table on the riverside or keep toasty by one of its open fires.
Box Hill
To admire this spots rural views, first you’ve got to jump across 17 stepping stones and climb 272 steps to the top of Box Hill, where the path begins. The total distance is 6.8 miles.
Post-walk pub: The cavernous Tree on Box Hill has an attractive menu and huge beer garden, or sample a glass of Juniper Hill at Denbies Winerie.
A South Downs Ridge (山脊)
If you’ve already done the classic Seven Sisters clifftop walk or can’t face all those hills, this is a long but lovely alternative. The route covering 14.3 miles snakes along a ridge and a river valley.
Post-walk pub: There are always 10 real beers at the old-school pub The Wellington.
Chess Valley in the Chilterns
Chess Valley in the Chiltern Hills isn’t home to any chess masters, but it used to produce a kind of water plant. This walk of 4.9 miles follows the river, winding through rolling meadows and woods.
Post-walk pub: The George & Dragon is a simple old coaching pub on the High Street with a log fire, real beers and giant burgers.
21.Which of the following walks covers the shortest distance
A. Box Hill. B. A South Downs Ridge.
C. Chess Valley in the Chilterns. D. Goring Gap and the Thames Path.
22.What do the listed scenic walks in the text have in common
A. The pubs are pretty and old-fashioned.
B. Visitors can relax at special pubs after walks.
C. There are rivers winding through the meadows.
D. The food served there is expensive and of high quality.
23.Where is this text probably taken from
A. A geography book. B. A travel brochure.
C. A fashion website. D. A science magazine.

Yellowstone National Park withdrew more than 10,000 visitors after a flash flood hit the park. Houses, roads and bridges were washed away, and the park's gateway communities were cut off from roads. Even though scientists and land managers are caught off guard by the flood, unseen in 100 years of recorded history, they recognize the similarities between the situation their data predicted and the flood. They just didn't expect the flood would occur this year.
While it will take more research to confirm if climate change made this flood event more extreme, the 2021 Greater Yellowstone Climate Assessment predicts significant changes in precipitation(降水),including when it will arrive and what forms it will take. Scientists expect more spring rain and less winter snow. The assessment also predicts increasing annual precipitation in Yellowstone National Park.
Changes have been already documented in the assessment. Since 1950,spring precipitation in the region has increased by 17-23 percent in April and May. Snowfall has dwindled even as overall annual precipitation has increased. That means rather than slowly increasing meltwater flowing to valleys during the summer months, rain tends to combine with melting snow, causing riskier events like the recent flood.
June precipitation this year is now at more than 400 percent above average in the parts of Montana and Wyoming that include Yellowstone National Park. And as temperatures rise, these rain-on-snow events are projected to become more frequent at higher elevations(海拔)in western North America, while lower snowpack will make them less frequent at low elevations.
Bruce Stein, chief scientist of the National Wildlife Federation, said several years ago, when he trained Yellowstone employees for climate planning, they focused on the features that drew visitors to the park—like bison and wolves. Roads, bridges, and houses being washed away was out of their consideration. "I think it's urgent and necessary for the park to look ahead to plan for different situations that could possibly happen as the climate changes,"said Stein.
24.What can we learn about the flood?
A.It's the most destructive in history.
B.It has been predicted with certainty.
C.It was worsened by changes in the weather.
D.It's partly in line with scientists' expectation.
25.What does the underlined word "dwindled" in paragraph 3 mean?
A.Varied. B.Balanced. C.Doubled. D.Declined.
26.What does Stein think the park should do next?
A.Take preventative measures.
B.Rebuild damaged structures.
C.Focus on its attractive features.
D.Receive training in climate planning.
27.Which is the best title of the text?
A.Yellowstone area:Is it more at risk of flood?
B.Yellowstone flooding:Why does it happen now?
C.Climate planning:Why is it important to Yellowstone?
D.Climate change:Does it mean more rain for Yellowstone?

When Argentinean thinker Juan Jose Sebrelli visited Shanghai in the 1960s as part of a delegation(代表团)invited by the Chinese government, he wrote that the city seemed strangely familiar.
I was reading his writing before boarding a plane on my first trip to Shanghai in 2016.By that time, I was doing research at home on how South American writers, diplomats(外交官)and politicians had developed a new world outlook. The opportunity of my life appeared when I was told I was recommended as the first scholar at a research center co-built by a research council of Argentina and Shanghai University for an exchange program.
My first year living in Shanghai was full of discoveries and adventures. I was in a constant state of curiosity. Every day, I discovered, tried and learned something new. In other words, the city impressed me: Its modern architecture and the opportunities that Shanghai gave to everyone made me feel that this place was one of the most dynamic places I'd ever been to. I recognized that this city allowed both locals and foreigners to rediscover and reinvent themselves. The experience of being in touch with a different culture has enriched my way of looking at and thinking about the world.
After three years, my program at the joint center came to an end. But Shanghai had another new surprise for me: I got an offer to work as a professor in Fudan University, which is an opportunity that I couldn't refuse. Gradually, I regarded Shanghai as my second home and I fully understood the meaning of Sebrelli's writing one day walking through my favorite spots of the city on Wuyuan Road and Wulumuqi Road. Several places made me have a strange feeling: The combination of Art Deco buildings and local stands on the street created an image of my homeland. At that moment, I understood that this city, as Sebrelli wrote,"is now a part of myself".

A.The sense of identity.

One year before,at age 18,Leszyeski had aged out of foster care(寄养中心),having been in the system since she was four when her single mother was no longer able to care for her. Leszyeski was now enrolled in college hoping to become a doctor. And the only furniture she had in her apartment was an air mattress with a hole in it.
Then she learned about an organization Chairity. The organization provides furniture and household goods for young adults who have left foster care. Leszyeski reached out to Chairity, a nonprofit formed by 23-year-old Maria Paparella.
Paparella first became aware of foster care in elementary school when her parents were considering adopting a child. The plan didn’t work out,but Paparella often found herself thinking about that child. “I’m really close with my family, and I just couldn’t imagine being completely on my own at 18,” she says.
At 16,Paparella visited Summit County Children Services, with a list of questions, trying to understand what aging out looked like. One of her questions was “What’s not being met for these young people ” Near the top of the list was furniture. “That struck home,” says Paparella. The idea of “moving into an apartment without a bed to sleep on or a sofa to sit on” pulled at her heartstrings.
Paparella contacted her parents’ friends, asking if they had spare furniture to donate. A local furniture store offered free ware-house space and its delivery truck. Watching the recipients’ faces when they received a bed,a couch—whatever—was amazing. Paparella remembers delivering a gold lamp to a woman and watching her polish it lovingly, getting rid of dirt and fingerprints.
Today, Chairity has given furniture to nearly 200 young adults in homes across six Ohio counties. Paparella is convinced these contributions give the recipients hope and confidence. Leszyeski agrees. “It makes me feel like I’m not different from other people. My whole life, I’ve felt abnormal,” she says, “Now, I feel normal.”

Mary led a fairly sheltered life and was quite shy. In every social occasion, her outgoing husband took the lead, striking up conversations with strangers. In October 2015, Mary and her husband retired and moved to the beautiful seaside city, Nanaimo, where Mary was looking forward to some quiet, creative activities. One day, they heard about an upcoming storytelling event near their neighborhood and decided to take part in it.
As the storytellers told stories on stage, the audience laughed, cried and sang. Like everyone else, Mary was also attracted by their performance. Somewhere in the middle of the storytelling, Mary suddenly had an exciting idea. She whispered to herself, “I love stories! I want to be a storyteller!”
Mary knew that storytelling requires getting up on a stage under bright lights and addressing strangers. Besides, storytelling requires self-confidence and tons of memorization(记诵). She thought, “I’m a shy person and public speaking is my greatest fear. I’m already sixty years old and my memory isn’t that great. What if I get up there and forget my story Where am I going to get the talent, memory, and courage needed to become a storyteller ” But she had never felt so alive before and she wanted to be a storyteller so much that she decided to challenge herself.
So when the storytellers finished their storytelling and said there would be storytelling training courses the next month, Mary registered and asked her husband to sign up as well. She needed his support, as she was too shy to stay with a roomful of strangers by herself.
The courses were given in a library near their neighborhood. It would train learners to tell stories fluently and confidently. Mary and her husband arrived early before the first course began. They found there were about thirty learners, including the young and the old. Mary was quite nervous, beginning regretting her decision.

解析:M: Well, I want to talk about an activity course for the summer holidays. It operated for the first time last year for a six-week period from the middle of July until the end of August. This year we will hold the course again. There will be different things to do every week,so the children won’t repeat the same activities over and over again. However, I don’t expect many children will come for the whole summer, as tm sure their parents will want to be with them for a week or two. We do,however, ask that children attend full weeks, not just single days. It makes it easier for us to keep attendance records. The course is available to children aged 8-10. Next year, those aged 5-7 are welcome to the course. If you or your child is interested in coming to our summer activity course, go to our website, www.summeractivities, co. uk and print out an application form. Send it in with part payment as soon as possible. You’ll need to tell us in which weeks you are planning to attend the course straightaway, but you won’t need to choose your activities in advance.
