Most people can’t live to 100. Those who do live so long can hardly walk, let alone take part in any activities. A few people, however, take part in dangerous activities even though they are more than 100 years old—They keep going and going! There is a great grandmother who likes challenging herself although she is 101 years old this year.
Mary Hardison believes that people should always be cheerful and more importantly, take on all kinds of adventures while they physically still can. So, instead of celebrating her 101st birthday with a boring party, she decided to go paragliding(滑翔跳伞)-an idea she got from her 75-year-old son who recently took it up as a hobby.
So on her birthday, cheered on by her big family, she tied herself up together with expert instructor Kevin Hintze, and jumped down fearlessly from the sky near her home in Ogden, Utah. And, it was not just a simple jump either. According to Kevin Hintze, the grandmother encouraged him to turn around, as they made their way down.
This is not the first time that Mary has done something “wild” and “crazy”. For her 90th birthday she rode all the adult rides at Disneyland. And, she is not done yet—For her 102nd birthday she hopes to go down the 3,000 feet Alpine Slide at Utah’s Park City Mountain Resort!
Not surprisingly, this great action has made Mary Hardison very famous and also earned her a place in the Guinness World Records where she broke a 2007 record set by a 100-year-old British woman. What an amazing lady!

There are many cities in China. Guilin is my favorite city because of its beauty, its waterways, its cafes, and most of all because I met my wife there. It is her hometown and we will both retire(退休)there in a few years.
Not only is Guilin a wonderful city, but there are many interesting places to visit within a short drive from there.
The Ling Canal, one of the wonders, is the oldest canal in the world. It was built about 2,200 years ago and connects two major river systems, the Yangtze and the Pearl River.
The Longsheng Rice Terraces is another man-made wonder. It was built around 650 years ago. I have some photos of both of these places in my China Daily Homepage Albums.
The Gudong Waterfall Park is another famous place that is worth visiting. The hike to the top of all these waterfalls isn’t very difficult and if you want, you can take ride to the bottom on personal rail car. You can control the speed or stop the car with a brake. If you want, you can also climb up some of the waterfalls with the help of chains(链条). It is very convenient for the climbers.
I have only been in Guilin during the winter and spring, but my wife tells me it gets pretty hot in the summer time. That’s OK because I grew up in the Midwest of the US where it gets very hot and wet during the summer months.
In Guilin, almost everything is within walking distance. If you need to go further, the buses come by every 5 minutes on the busy streets. There are plenty of taxis, too, and most trips are only 6yuan. Guilin is a perfect place to have a retired life.

“A lie can travel halfway around the world before the truth can get its boots(靴子)on.” said Mark Twain. In today’s Internet world of “fake(假的)news,” lies spread even faster and the truth is having trouble finding its boots.
To make matters worse, most young people get news from social media sites where facts are mixed with rumors(谣言), half-truths and complete lies. This has led to young people becoming confused. In the latest PISA, which tested 15-year-olds worldwide on academic subjects, fewer than one in ten of the examinees were reported to be able to recognize fact from opinion. A Stanford University study showed that students at all levels of education could not tell teal news from fake news. In one instance, 80 percent thought that a paid advertisement was a real news story.
Fake news is spread by people who have a prejudice(偏见). They want to influence public opinion either for or against something or someone. It is important, then, for young people to recognize when they are being used and to be doubtful about online information.
Traditional media, such as newspapers and television, are still the more believable sources of information. Reporters are professional trained to look for facts, and editors have the job of making sure those facts are correct. However, if you are getting most of your information online, you have to be your own editor. In that case, the first thing to do is to look at the writer of a post. Is this person known to be objective Does the site where you read the post have a prejudice Next, look for other sources from mainstream media to make sure the information. In other words, by putting on your truth boots you won’t be fooled into chasing lies.
32. Why is the quote mentioned in Paragraph 1
A. To introduce the topic. B. To give an explanation.
C. To offer background information. D. To test readers.
33. What does the writer say about young people with news around
A. They make fake news and spread it. B. They are easily fooled by fake news.
C. They get worried about their education. D. They can recognize facts from opinions.
34. According to the writer, what can help us avoid being fooled by fake news
A. Only look for news through media. B. Become a professional and trained reporter.
C. Compare the news from different sources. D. Focus on the new instead of the writer.

Florence Nightingale was born into a rich family. When she was young, she took lessons in music and drawing, and read great books. As a child, she felt that visiting sick people was a duty and a pleasure. She then made up her mind to be a nurse. She went to learn nursing in Germany. When she returned to England, Florence started a nursing home for women. During the Crimean War in 1854, she went with a group of thirty-eight nurses to the front hospitals. What they saw there was scary. Dirt and death were everywhere to be seen and smelled. The officer there did not want any women to tell him how to run a hospital, either. But the brave nurses went to work. After the war, she was honored for her services by Queen Victoria. She raised money to build the Nightingale Training School in London. Moreover, she wrote a book on public health, which was printed in several Countries.

A food festival
To promote Chinese food culture and enrich students’ campus life, our school held a food festival in the dining room last Sunday.
During the activity, the cooks from our school introduced traditional styles of cooking and cooked many famous dishes like stinky tofu and Gong Bao Chicken. Many students also cooked in person with the help of the cooks.
All the students present spoke highly of this activity which let them have a better understanding of China’s rich and profound food culture.
