I remember the day when I first learned to ride a bike. It was a frightening, yet fun experience. My grandfather was the one who taught me and he helped me when I got hurt. The first time I got on a bike, I had no idea what I was doing, and just about everything went wrong. My grandfather told me to just put my feet on the pedals(脚蹬子) and start cycling. He also told me he would hold onto the back of the bike the whole time, yet he didn't.
As soon as I started trying to balance myself, he let the bike go. I happened to look back just then. I was scared to death that I was going to fall and hurt myself. When I was scared, my mind went blank from cycling, and I just wanted off. I forgot how to use the brakes(车闸) and fell right off the bike. My grandfather kept encouraging me to get up and try again, and after about 15 minutes, I finally stopped crying, got up and tried again.
As soon as I started riding again, my pants got caught in the chain, and I fell flat on my face and hit my nose. My grandfather decided to call it a day and try again the next morning. The next morning I woke up brightly and early, and was very eager to try to ride my bike. My nose felt better, so I wasn't that afraid of falling anymore.
Despite the fact that I knew there were a range of difficulties on the way to mastering the skills in riding a bike, I believed I could do well with my grandfather's help. After all, riding a bike was indeed what I wanted to do eagerly.

Did you ever have to say “no” to somebody Such as a classmate who asks to go to lunch with you New research suggests that, at least socially, a rejection (拒绝) should not include an apology. In other words, saying you are sorry does not make the person being rejected feel any better. In fact, it might make the rejected person feel worse. That is surprising. Many people consider it to be good manners to say they are sorry when they turn down a request.
Gili Freedman is doing some related research at Dartmouth College. For her research, she asked over 1,000 people to respond to different examples of social rejection. In one example, the researchers asked people for their reaction (反应)after a person named Taylor asked to join a co-worker who went out to lunch every Friday. And Taylor was told “no”. But in some cases, the person rejecting Taylor offered an apology. In other cases, the people doing the rejection did not say they were sorry. People were asked how they would feel if they were being turned down, just as Taylor was. Most said they would be more hurt by a rejection with an apology than a rejection without an apology.
Freedman said the reason is that apologies make people feel like they need to say that the rejection was okay— even when they felt like it was not okay. Rejection without an apology lets them express their feelings of disappointment, hurt or anger more easily. Freedman also said that an apology often makes the person doing the rejection feel better—even as it makes the person being rejected feel worse.
Her research deals only with social communication. A business situation might be very different. “If a manager rejects a job interviewee or a boss must tell an employee that he or she is being fired from a job,” Freedman said, “reactions to apologies may be different.”
8. Why do people say they are sorry when they express rejection
A. Because they think it is more polite.
B. Because they think it helps them express their dislike better.
C. Because they think apologies are the basis of communication.
D. Because they think it sounds more comfortable for the listener.
9. In Gili Freedman’s research, over 1,000 people ________.
A. rejected others without an apology
B. offered an apology when rejecting others
C. would be more hurt by a rejection with an apology
D. were asked to answer the question in different situations
10. What role does an apology play in rejection
A. It makes the rejection more acceptable.
B It makes a good impression on the listener.
C. It makes the communication more pleasant.
D. It makes the person doing the rejecting feel better.
11. What will be mentioned next according to the last paragraph
A. The effect of an apology during a rejection.
B. Gili Freedman’s research on business situations.
C. A rejection with an apology in a business situation.
D. The difference between a social situation and a business one.
D
The widespread use of Internet technology has made our lives easier but causes a big challenge to senior citizens (长者), who are not always comfortable with smartphones and so many new apps.
Only a few senior citizens are able to enjoy the advantages that new technologies offer. According to the National Bureau of Statistics, the number of people aged 60 and above was 253.88 million in 2019, about 18.1% of China's population. But only 23% of the senior citizens were able to use the Internet. That means more than three-fourths of the elderly are deprived (被剥夺) of the digital benefits.
Many senior citizens who can't use smartphones are facing difficulties during this pandemic (流行病).Even with a smartphone in hand and Internet available, many of them still feel helpless. They don't know how to call a taxi through the apps. There have been reports of many shops turning away elders who don't know how to pay using smartphones, instead of letting them pay with cash. Worse still, as they don't know how to get the Internet-based health code (健康码), they are refused to enter many public places. Presenting individual health code is part of the epidemic prevention(防疫) and control measures.
New technologies become popular because they are often useful in our daily lives. But many senior citizens, especially those living in the countryside or those whose grown-up children don't live with them, are not able to use the Internet or smartphones, either because of financial(财政的) problems or because they cannot learn new things beyond a certain point. The digital gap between the elderly and the young is becoming more clear.
However, the senior citizens should not become a silent group deprived of digital benefits. It is our responsibility to help them bridge the digital gap, and be patient with them when they face difficulties catching up.
12. What do the statistics show in Paragraph 2
A. There are a small number of senior citizens in China.
B. Only 23% of the senior citizens can use the computer.
C. Three fourths of the elders are unwilling to use smartphones.
D. Many elders fail to enjoy the convenience of the digital devices.
13. What does the author try to tell us
A. Cash is no longer accepted in most shops.
B It's a must for everyone to have a health code.
C. Most elders need guidance on how to use the apps.
D. Many shops now refuse to offer service to the elderly.
14. The elderly can't enjoy digital advantages for the following reasons EXCEPT ________.
A. their living areas
B. their financial conditions
C. their relationship with children
D. their difficulty in learning new things
15. Which word best describes the author's attitude to the present situation of the elderly
A. Positive B. Worried C. Negative D. Doubtful

第二节 读后续写(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
It was eight o'clock on a May morning, and Micah, my 17-year-old daughter, was in our bonus room upstairs. It had been her temporary eleventh-grade classroom ever since schools had moved to remote learning due to the pandemic (疫情).
From the kitchen, I listened for the sound of her tapping on her laptop. I resisted the urge to check on her. Way too often, Micah was texting friends and commenting on their posts about the fun they were having together. We'd barely left the house for 10 weeks straight.
"Mom, everyone is hanging out today!" Micah's voice came from upstairs. "Why can't I "
I went up the stairs. Micah was lying on the floor wearing pajamas(睡衣), her laptop, school iPad and cell phone in front of her. "It's not fair," she said. I have no one I can be with. I can't wait until I'm 18 and can do what I want."
We'd had this conversation before. Still, I couldn't help but feel sorry for her. I was sick of having to stay at home too. Even though Micah and I were home together more than we had been in years, we might as well have been living in separate worlds. "Wanna watch TV later " I asked. "No, thanks." Micah shook her head.
"In a few weeks you'll be going to sports camp,'' I added "That's something you can look forward to." I closed the door. I was used to Micah's rejection, but it still hurt. Teenage independence is heathy, but I worried if I didn't find a way to bond with my girl soon, I might never be close with her again. She'd be 18 in the fall and had already convinced herself she didn't need me anymore. Maybe she was right. No matter what I did, I couldn't seem to reach her.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
That evening, I was surfing online and saw a friend's children playing with their new cat.

B. It makes a good impression on the listener.
【答案】8. A 9. D 10. D 11. C

B. It's a must for everyone to have a health code.
C. Most elders need guidance on how to use the apps.
D. Many shops now refuse to offer service to the elderly.
14. The elderly can't enjoy digital advantages for the following reasons EXCEPT ________.
A. their living areas
B. their financial conditions
C. their relationship with children
D. their difficulty in learning new things
15. Which word best describes the author's attitude to the present situation of the elderly
A. Positive B. Worried C. Negative D. Doubtful
【答案】12. D 13. C 14. C 15. A

Worse still, as they don't know how to get the Internet-based health code , they are refused to enter many public places.(他们不知道如何通过应用叫出租车。

Can you remember a time when somebody was kind to you Perhaps a person allowed you to go in front of them in a queue. Maybe your sister phoned you to ask how your week was going. Or perhaps a stranger or a friend helped you in a much deeper way. ___16___
Few people would disagree with the idea that a kind action is good for the soul. It is a win-win situation, leading to a sense of well-being for both the receiver and the giver. As a simple example, let's imagine you have a workmate who always does a very good job. ___17___ Your workmate will be happy to receive some praise and, in addition, you will probably feel good about yourself for having spread a little joy.
___18___ The idea behind this is that it doesn't take any major plan to be kind, just a little bit of effort. They believe that kindness can be taught and that it is contagious(有感染力的). So by being kind to others, a more bright community and world will be created.
Some websites suggest more imaginative ways to show kindness. ___19___ The first is interpersonal kindness. Some examples are donating old clothes to charity or writing a positive online comment about a restaurant that you like. The second is environmental kindness, which could mean simply recycling or organizing a group event to clean a local park or beach. The third category is less obvious: personal kindness, which means treating yourself kindly. Some examples are taking a walk in nature or setting yourself an objective to complain less. ___20___
A. Doing something good can be very hard.
B. You praise it and show your admiration.
C. Generally, these fall into three categories.
D. Offering kindness can bring happiness.
E. There are a million ways to offer kindness.
F. People are encouraged to do random acts of kindness.
G. If you are kind to yourself, you will naturally be kinder to others.
【答案】16. E 17. B 18. F 19. C 20. G

【16题详解】
上文“Can you remember a time when somebody was kind to you Perhaps a person allowed you to go in front of them in a queue. Maybe your sister phoned you to ask how your week was going. Or perhaps a stranger or a friend helped you in a much deeper way.(你还记得有人对你很好的时候吗 也许有人允许你排在他们前面。也许你姐姐打电话问你这周过得怎么样。或者可能是一个陌生人或朋友在更深层次上帮助了你。)”主要列举了几种别人对你的示好和友善举动,段尾句对本段有总结作用,E选项“有一百万种表达善意的方式。”说明表达善意的方式有很多,作为总结恰到好处。故选E项。
【17题详解】
上文“As a simple example, let's imagine you have a workmate who always does a very good job.(作为一个简单的例子,让我们假设你有一个工作总是做得很好的同事。)”,此空处于举例子的语境中,下文“Your workmate will be happy to receive some praise and, in addition, you will probably feel good about yourself for having spread a little joy.(你的同事会很高兴得到一些表扬,此外,你可能会因为传播了一点快乐而自我感觉良好。)”,由此可推测,中间句应该表达你对同事的工作表示赞扬,B项“你赞美它,表示你的赞赏。”符合语境。故选B项。
【18题详解】
下文“The idea behind this is that it doesn't take any major plan to be kind, just a little bit of effort.(这背后的想法是,它不需要任何重大的计划,只是一点点努力。)”可知,此处应该提到某种表达善意的主意,F项“人们被鼓励做一些随意的善举”符合语境。故选F项。
【19题详解】
由下文中的“The first…”,“The second…”,“The third…”可知,此空处的意义应该是这三种做法的统领和概括。C项“一般来说,这些可以分为三类。”符合语境。故选C项。
【20题详解】
上文“The third category is less obvious: personal kindness, which means treating yourself kindly.(第三种则不那么明显:个人善良,这意味着善待自己。)”可知,选项承接上文,说明善待自己的作用。故G项“善待自己,自然也会善待他人”符合语境。故选G项。

注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
That evening I was surfing online and saw a friend's children playing with their new cat.

【答案】That evening. I was surfing online and saw a friend’s children playing with their new cat. An idea hit me. “Why not get her a pet ” I thought to myself. Acting on a sudden inspiration, I logged in a pet shelter website and went straight to Micah’s room. "Sweetie, I've got a surprise for you." I showed her the pictures of those cats that she could adopt. With her mouth wide opening, she simply couldn’t take her eyes off those cute creatures. Finally she pointed to a baby cat with yellow spots on the head.
“This is the one I want "she said, smiling. We paid online and the next day the little angel was delivered to our house. Micah gently scooped it up into her arms and planted her face into the soft fur and then Micah smiled at me with a tender look, "thank you, mum." A huge wave of warmth flooded all over my body and it seemed like a wall between us torn down. My silence drew her attention and she looked at me again, throwing herself in my arms. “I love you, mum.”
