A week ago I went on a drive to explore an area of Eastern Washington that I'm not familiar with at all. It was the rolling countryside north of where I live, near the little town of Manson.
The geography here is dry but lower, wider, and full of rolling hills. The area miles into the distance towards the East. It seems like a very rural, mainly uni汕 abited(杳无人烟的)area, but actually, as you explore, you quickly realize that
there are houses even in the most remote( 遥 远 的 )looking areas, little pockets of
human life here and there.
I think that people who live in these areas are either retired, working remotely from home, or really need the peace and energy that the quiet countryside can give.
Driving up a lonely, winding road, suddenly there was a flash of color above that passed over the car. Of all things it was a peacock(孔雀)W.hat on earth was it doing in this remote area It seemed really out of place. It flew from one side of the road to the hill on the other, joining eight others that were already there, enjoying the

Change happens to any language. New vocabulary is often required for the latest inventions or ideas. But a language can also change for reasons that are not clear.
Language changes whenever speakers communicate with each other. People from different places clearly speak differently, but even within the same small community, people speak differently depending on their age, origin, and social and educational background. When we communicate with these different speakers, in different situations, we hear new words and expressions, and can make them a part of our own speech. Even if your family has lived in the same area for generations, you can probably see a number of differences between the language you use and the way your grandparents speak.
During the 18th century, Jonathan Swift, the Irish writer, and many other people felt the English language was in serious fall and that a national organization— like
those in France and Italy — should be created to save the language. Swift once wrote that we should find a way to conclude any change of our language.
More experts believe that change in language is unavoidable( 不 可 避免). Change is a way of keeping a language alive and useful, and gives speakers different ways of saying things with extremely small differences of meaning and ways of expressing completely new ideas.
In 1747, Samuel Johnson wrote about his desire to write a dictionary that would fix the pronunciation of English and keep it pure. But when he completed the dictionary ten years later, he admitted in his introduction that fixing a language was impossible. Like it or not, language is always changing and English will go on doing
so in many creative and — to some people— annoying ways.
What can we learn from the second paragraph
Some people learn to speak better than others.
The youth learn much about language from their grandparents.
Language changes little if people stay in the same place.
Language change is greatly influenced by people.
What is Jonathan Swift's attitude to language change
A. unsupportive B. indifferent C. favorable. D. unavoidable.
Why did Samuel Johnson decide to write a dictionary
A. To create some new English words. B. To keep English from changing.
C. To include some words from daily life. D. To record the changes in English.
What would be the best title for the text
A. Does language change influence society B. Written English needs standards.
Why does language change D. How to protect the language. D
For those who get angry when they miss out on lunch, it may be the perfect excuse: a lack of food makes bearable people "angry".
In one of the first studies to explore how hunger affects emotions(情绪)as people go about their daily lives, psychologists found that the more hungry people felt, the more angry they became, which is called hangry.
The study came about after Prof. Viren Swami, a social psychologist at Anglia
Ruskin University, was told, on more than one occasion, that he was hangry and should do something about it. The challenge left him wondering if being hangry was
Educators should pay more attention to children's learning methods.

a real phenomeno(n
现象).
A. In a diary. B. In a biology book
Working with researchers in Austria and Malaysia, Swami recruited(招募)64 adults aged 18 to 60 to record their emotions and feelings of hunger five times a day for three weeks. While the relationship between hunger and emotions has been
studied in labs, the volunteers monitored their feelings as they went about their daily routines. Swami found being hangry is a real thing.
The study does not give any solutions, but Swami believes that being able to recognize the emotion can itself be of help. "Normally, we might be aware of what we are feeling but not understand the cause of it. But it doesn't matter at all. The study actually opens a door to further understand that." he said.
Regardless of the mechanism, Swami believes the study raises a serious point: children who go hungry to school are less likely to learn effectively, and more likely to have behavioral problems, so ensuring pupils are properly fed must be a priority. "It's really important to be able to identify emotions like being hangry so we can reduce the negative effects," he said.
What caused Prof. Viren Swami to do the study
His competition with his colleagues.
His academic and research pursuits.
The biggest challenge in psychology.
The fact that he might suffer from hangry.
What can we know about the study
Its importance is beyond doubt.
It put forward some practical solutions.
Its participants included children and adults.
It explained why people could control their emotions.
What can we infer from the last paragraph
We'd better encourage children to stay positive.
It's important to help children get rid of negative emotions.
Children going hungry to school are more likely to perform worse.
C. In a novel. D. In a science magazine.
