I'm very thankful to the cat and it always makes me think of the time I was with him.
Five years ago, when my father was dying, I travelled a thousand miles from home to be with him in his last days. I felt very sad and it was one of the most difficult and painful times in my life. After he passed away, I stayed alone in his flat. There were so many things to deal with. I was lonely and I hated the silence of the flat.
But one evening the silence was broken, I heard crying outside. I opened the door to find a little cat on the steps. He was thin and poor. He looked the way I felt. I brought him inside and gave him a can of fish. He ate it and then almost immediately fell asleep.
The next morning I checked with neighbors and learned that the cat had been left by his owner. His owner had moved out, so the little cat was there all alone, just like I was. As I walked back to the flat, I tried to work out what to do with him. Having something else to take care of seemed like the very last thing I needed. But as soon as I opened the flat door, he ran to me and jumped into my arms. It was clear from that moment that he didn't want to go anywhere. I started calling him Willis in order to remember my father's best friend.
From then on, things grew easier. With Willis in my lap, time seemed to pass much faster.
When the time finally came for me to return home, I had to decide what to do about Willis. There was absolutely no way I would leave without him.

For a long time being happy was considered something that just happened, and there was nothing special about it. Now we know that getting along with other people is something that we can work at. It is possible to act in such a way that other people will like us better. One way is being unselfish, not wanting everything from our friends. Another way is to look for good points, not bad ones in other people. It is surprising how successful this treasure (珍宝) hunt can be.
You don’t have to be spineless (没有骨气的) in order to be popular. In fact, you will be liked and respected if you are not afraid to stand up for your rights. But do it politely and pleasantly. Being friendly and polite to your group, to other people and to strangers and especially to those who do not look important or do not interest you is one way to develop a good character.
You can not expect to be perfect, and you must learn not to be unhappy when you make mistakes. Everyone makes mistakes, and no one is to be blamed (责备) unless he refuses to learn from them. Many young people become discouraged when they know in themselves qualities that they do not like—selfishness, laziness, and other unpleasant qualities. Just remember that we all have some of these faults and have to fight against them.
At the same time, it is important to remember that, while you are probably no worse than others, the best way to be happy is to think yourself above other people. When something is wrong, it is good sense to try to make it right. Perhaps you don’t like a teacher or a classmate. Try to see why and look at yourself, too, to be sure that you are not doing anything to make that person dislikes you. Some day, things may turn out all right and then you will have to learn to get along the best with situation, without thinking too much about it. Worrying never helps in a situation you can’t change.
( )31. One of the two ways the author suggested for us to get along with others is .
A. to look for treasure to be successful B. to draw much attention of our friends
C. to ask for the best share of everything D. to pay more attention to others ’ advantages ( )32. According to the passage, if one wants to be popular, one has to .
A. be polite and friendly B. give up some rights
C. praise other people D. be ready to change himself
( )33. The passage infers (暗示)that in order to be a happy person, one should consider oneself

It is natural that young people are often uncomfortable when they are with their parents. 36 They often think that their parents are out of touch with modern ways; that they are too serious and too strict with their children; and that they seldom give their children a free hand.
It is true that parents often find it difficult to win their children's trust and they always forget how they themselves felt when young. For example, young people like to make choices without much thinking. It is one of their ways to show that they have grown up and they can face any difficult situation. 37 Most of them plan things ahead, at least in the back of their minds, and do not like their plans to be upset (扰乱) by something unexpected.
Young people often make their parents angry with their choices in clothes, in entertainment and in music. But they do not mean to cause any trouble; it is just that they feel cut off from the older people's world, into which they have not yet been accepted. 38 They will specially wear clothes or say something that are different from those their parents like. And this will make the young people very happy somehow.
Sometimes you are so proud of yourself that you do not want your parents to say “yes” to what you do. 39 It is natural enough after being a child for so many years, when you were completely under your parents' control.
But if you plan to control your life, you’d better win your parents over and try to get them to understand you. 40 If your parents see that you have a high sense of responsibility, they will certainly give you the right to do what you want to do.
A.Older people seem to worry a lot more easily. B.Parents should try hard to keep up with their children. C.That's why young people want to make a new culture of their own. D.You can ask for their advice before you start doing something. E.They say that their parents don't understand them. F.Young people like to make plans for almost everything. G.All you want is to be left alone and do what you like.
