Do you remember the name of your kindergarten teacher I do, mine. Her name was Mrs. White.
I don’t remember much about what we learned in her class, but my mother once told me that we used to write a lot. And I would bring back what I wrote and she would look at it and see there were so many mistakes. But no red corrections. And always a star. Sometimes even a Good! The scrawl (潦草的笔迹) in that worried my mother, so one day when she met Mrs. White for one of those Parent-Teacher meetings, she asked her why she never corrected my mistakes. Why she never red-pencilled in the right spellings of words or pointed out grammatical errors.
Mrs. White said, “The children are just beginning to get excited about using words, about forming sentences. I don’t want to dampen that enthusiasm with red ink. Spelling and grammar can wait...” What my mother gave me was the gist of what she could remember. But I grew up learning to use words with loving confidence just like that.
And it occurs to me that if Mrs. White had used her red pen more precisely I probably wouldn’t be telling you about this now. I look back now and think she must have been a rather extraordinary teacher—to restrain (限定, 限制) her red pen. To allow the joy, wonder and excitement of expression flower—however faultily—like that.
I used to misspell “beautiful” a lot. I never could quite remember that the “e” went before the “a”. It annoyed my teacher in high school endlessly. Eventually the “e” s and “a” s that were wrong placed in “beautiful” settled into their right places. I am glad I didn’t wait on them though. “Pretty” is easier to spell but it doesn’t hold as much as you mean sometimes.
And thanks to Mrs. White I had no concerns about writing what I meant, even if I couldn’t quite spell it out. Because life isn’t pretty. It’s beautiful.
24.What worried his mother when the author was in kindergarten
A.The author’s unwillingness to go to school.
B.The teacher’s terrible attitude to the author.
C.The teacher’s ignorance of the author’s mistakes.
D.The author’s failure in exams and scrawl in homework.
25.What does the underlined word “dampen” in Paragraph 3 mean
A.Reduce. B.Gain. C.Awaken. D.Inspire.
26.What can we learn from the fifth paragraph
A.The author preferred using the word “pretty”.
B.The teacher in high school disliked the author.
C.The author finally succeeded in spelling “beautiful” correctly.
D.The author owed all his own spelling problems to Mrs. White.
27.Which of the following can be used to describe Mrs. White
A.Generous and kind. B.Enthusiastic and careful.
C.Honest and brave. D.Far-sighted and tolerant.
C
Children should do housework. That’s a controversial (有争议的) idea, though not everyone will admit it. A few parents will say that their children are too busy for housework. Many more of us assign (分派) housework, or say we believe in them, but the housework just doesn’t get done.
That’s a problem. For starters, housework is good for kids. Being a part of the routine work of running a household helps children develop an awareness of the needs of others, while at the same time contributing to their emotional well-being.
One small study, done over a period of 25 years, found that the best predictor (预测) for young adults’ success in their mid-20s was whether they participated in household tasks at age 3 or 4. Those early shared responsibilities extended to a sense of responsibility in other areas of their lives.
But for all that their help matters, few kids are doing much around the house at all. In a survey of 1,000 American adults, 75 percent said they believed regular housework made kids “more responsible”. Yet while 82 percent reported having had regular housework growing up, only 56 percent of those with children said they required them to do housework.
Sports and homework are not get-out-of-housework-free cards. The goal, after all, is to raise adults who can balance a caring role in their families and communities with whatever lifetime achievement goals they choose. Housework teaches that balance.
What should you do when getting children to do housework Accept no excuses. Don’t worry if you must repeat yourself again and again. If you’re spending more time getting the child to do this job than it would take to do it yourself, then you’re doing it right. Can a payment help Maybe. But if you’re trying to teach kids to share the responsibility of a home, paying them for routine housework is not the right message.
28.What can we infer from the first paragraph
A.Very few children get housework done. B.Children are very busy with housework.
C.Housework is a must-do for parents. D.Family members should respect each other.
29.What is found in the small study
A.Housework helps a man live a happy life.
B.A man’s success depends on his housework.
C.Housework benefits a sense of responsibility.
D.A child must start doing housework at Age 3.
30.What does the author advise parents to do in the last paragraph
A.Balance housework and study. B.Help the child do housework positively.
C.Do housework by themselves. D.Pay the child for housework.
31.What is the best title of the text
A.Adults Do Less Housework in the US B.Housework Matters to Children.
C.Parents Words Speak Louder D.Children Need More Care at Home
D
A small study out of Skidmore College examined the advantages of morning vs, evening exercise for both women and men. Paul, professor for health at Skidmore, led the study.
“We had the groups divided into evening and morning groups,” he says. “We found women and men answered differently to different types of exercise depending on the time of the day, which surprised us.”
The study showed that for women who want to lower blood pressure (血压), the risk of heart disease or reduce fat, morning exercise works best. Those women hoping for upper body muscle (肌肉) gains or mood (心情) improvement should consider evening exercise. For the men, the findings were somewhat different: Evening exercise lowers blood pressure, the risk of heart disease, and feelings of tiredness. But similar to women, they burn more fat with morning exercise.
“For many people, the best time to exercise will depend on their chronotype,” says Heisz, author of Move the Body, Heal the Mind.
“Chronotype is your body’s natural habit to sleep at a certain time—it’s what decides whether you’re a night owl or an early bird. For the 25% of the population that considers themselves a night owl, getting both enough sleep and enough exercise can be difficult,” adds Heisz.
He continues, “Sleep—which provides your body the necessary time to recover (恢复) and make gains from exercise—should always be the first choice. When it comes to exercise, regardless of research on the advantages of certain exercises at particular times of the day, your results will not be good if it doesn’t allow enough time for sleep.”
32.What can women get by doing evening exercise according to the study
A.A fat loss. B.A good mood.
C.A lower blood pressure. D.A smaller risk of heart disease.
33.What does the author intend to do in paragraph 5
A.Give an example. B.Tell the difference.
C.Do an experiment. D.Explain a term.
34.What does Heisz think is important to achieve good results of exercise
A.Enough sleep. B.Low-fat food.
C.Plenty of water. D.Lots of exercise.
35.What is the best title for the text
A.A Night Owl or An Early Bird B.Why Fitness Plan Being Important
C.How to Change Your Exercise Time D.The Best Time of a Day to Exercise

Bus driver Harlan Jenifer was out at 3 am to drive his bus around Torresdale Avenue near Cottman in the Tacony neighborhood when he saw a tiny figure (人影) waiting at the bus stop. It was Annabelle, a 4-year-old little girl.
It was the wee hours (凌晨) of a rainy morning and Harlan was out to drive his SEPTA's 56 bus on his regular route (路线).As usual, he picked up his passengers (乘客) one by one. Of course, he had no idea that he would pick up a special (特别的) passenger at this time in the morning. Just as he was about to pass a stop near the Tacony neighborhood, a woman passenger told him about a little girl she saw, all alone waiting at the bus stop. He stopped his bus and was shocked (震惊的) at what he saw. Wearing her purple raincoat, sleeping clothes, and her boots, little Annabelle was patiently waiting for the bus to stop so she could ride on it.

He had to do something to take the little girl safely back home.
He and the passengers on the bus tried to find out how this happened. As it turned out, Annabelle even walked 5 blocks (街区) in the rain before she reached the bus stop where she was found. Without hesitation (犹豫) , Harlan called the local police and told them of the little girl they found.
As Annabelle sat on the bus, the passengers comforted (安慰) her and made sure she was okay. As the little girl sat with the other passengers, she shared her mission (使命) that early morning. “All I want is a slushie(冰沙),” That was all she said. By the way, slushie is a frozen treat (冷冻食品) .

66.Dear Amy,
Welcome to our school! I’m glad to receive your letter asking for my advice on how to adapt to school life and get to know the city better. Here are some suggestions, which I hope will be of some help to you.
To begin with, you’d better think carefully about what courses to take, in which you will make some new friends. Besides, I recommend that you join in some extra-curricular activities or sign up for school clubs, getting acquainted with new people and adapting to the life here quickly. In addition, to ensure that you get to know the city faster, it would be a good idea to participate in some outdoor activities. Last but not least, if possible, explore some local cuisine, so that you can have a better understanding of the city where the new school is located.
Hopefully you’ll enjoy your stay here. Looking forward to your coming.
Yours.
Li Hua
67.Within an hour, police officers came to fetch Annabelle. They learned about Annabelle’s information and brought her back to her parents. They were shocked to know that their little girl had wandered off that early morning for a frozen treat. Annabelle’s mom was very happy to know that kind people found her daughter. She could not imagine what would have happened if things turned bad. If it were not for the kind driver, their daughter might not have returned home safe and sound.
Annabelle’s parents were happy to see her again. They first comforted the little girl and hugged her tightly. The little girl still remembered her mission and asked her mother to get her a slushie. Then till the daytime, when Harlan was off work, they brought the little girl and thanked him in person. They were full of gratitude. They knew it was not too hard to imagine what could have happened if people who found their daughter were not as kind as the ones who did find her. They said they would be forever grateful.

Text10:
Good evening. Tonight’s main news is about a new company that was just established last week in our town. It was set up with the strong support of the government. Its major business is about dubbing. That is to replace the original speech in a film or television program with words in another language. The reason for the government’s support is not about making money. It’s because this new company can solve many local people’s employment problems. Here I’d like to announce its recruitment ad. There is no limit to your age, gender and educational background. The only requirement is that you should love dubbing and devote yourself to it. You can work either full-time or part-time. But if it’s your part-time job, you’re expected to work 8 hours a week. Full-time staff can get a basic salary of $3,000 a month, and there is a cash bonus for you based on your performance. For those part-time workers, the salary is $10 per hour but there are no other awards for you. Those who are interested can apply for the job by sending emails to the company’s manager. The email address of the manager is in the bottom right-hand corner of the screen.
