Celebrated on June16th, World Sea Turtle Day is a day dedicated to one of the world’s oldest and most fascinating creatures. Unfortunately, this is also a day to remind everyone of the sea turtle’s endangered status.
Sea turtles have been around since the time of dinosaurs. They typically live to between 30 and 50 years of age, spending most of their lives at sea. Part of the reptile(爬行动物) family, sea turtles can hold their breath for up to five hours. This comes in handy since some species can dive as deep as 1,000 meters below the water’s surface before needing to come up for air. Sea turtles also like to get around, often migrating very long distances. One species can migrate over 12,000 km from nesting beaches in Japan all the way to feeding grounds near Mexico.
Female sea turtles return to the beach they hatched on to nest. Some species lay up to 250 eggs in a single nest, and each egg takes around 60 days to incubate(孵化). However, it’s estimated that only one in a thousand baby turtles can survive to adulthood.
Although it is worth having a day to celebrate these magnificent animals, World Sea Turtle Day also has a more serious purpose: to raise awareness of their difficult situation. Sea turtles are threatened with extinction. Plastic trash is a big problem because the turtles often mistake bags and other plastic items for food like jellyfish. In fact, half of all sea turtles have consumed plastic at some time in their lives.
Rising global temperature is another threat facing turtles. Turtle eggs that lie on warm sand are more likely to result in female turtles, which affects the animal’s diversity. Also, trash-covered beaches can make it hard for baby turtles to reach the sea.
However you want to celebrate World Sea Turtle Day, take some time to spread the word about what we can do to protect these ancient animals. Reducing the amount of plastic we use is just one small way we can help make sure sea turtles stick around for another 100 million years.

The American state of Wyoming has created an app to help citizens collect animals killed in road accidents. The tool permits people to legally(合法地) use the animals, known as roadkill, for food. The program also aims to collect data to help officials decide on measures to improve road safety.
State wildlife and highway officials added the system to a state-operated app that provides information on road conditions and traffic. Users can record sightings of roadkill accidents and seek permission to remove the animals within the state's rules and guidelines. Wyoming describes “road killed wildlife” as any deer, antelope, elk, moose, wild bison or wild turkey that was killed in an accidental vehicle crash.
State rules require the full animal remains to be collected. For safety reasons, roadkill may not be picked up after dark, along interstate highways or in areas where road repairs are happening. The app provides state officials with data on the number of roadkill accidents and where the crashes happen. This helps wildlife and transportation officials decide where to put up warning signs for animal crossings.
Jaden Bales is a spokesperson for the Wyoming Wildlife Federation. He was recently told that a deer had been killed on a road not far from his home in the town of Lander. He used the app to report and collect the deer. He then processed the animal's remains for food.
Bales said some people might think it is acceptable to leave roadkill where it is so that the “circle of life” can be completed. In this way, other creatures show up to feed on the dead animals. But this, he added, presents big risks to the other animals. It is really dangerous for any of the creatures that come and try to eat roadkill.
27.What do government officials intend to do with the app
A.Explore places where wild animals live. B.Find out why animals cross the road.
C.Discover what animals cross the road. D.Find ways to protect animals on the road.
28.What’s Bales’ attitude towards the use of roadkill
A.Uncaring. B.Supportive. C.Doubtful. D.Unclear.
29.What is one benefit of picking up roadkill from the road
A.Making up for the lack of meat as food. B.Curing wild animals of their injuries.
C.Preventing more wild animals being killed. D.Protecting the circle of life.
30.Which of the following can be the best title for the text
A.App Helps People Collect Animals Killed on Roads
B.People Legally Pick Up Roadkill Animals on Roads
C.App Is Created for Drivers to Use to Save Animals
D.State Takes Action to Remove Animals on Roads
Blue whales are the largest animals ever known to have existed on the planet, and they can grow to a length of 100 feet and weigh more than 330,000 pounds. But recently researchers have found that these whales are on the move and they have migrated from California waters to areas off Canada and Alaska for the first time since commercial whaling ended in 1965.
The researchers identified 15 blue whales that have appeared off the coast of British Columbia and the Gulf of Alaska since 1997. Four of these whales were recognized as ones that were once sighted off California shores, suggesting that the whales are returning to an old migration pattern between the coasts.
Before commercial whaling began in the early 1900s, blue whales were found widely throughout the North Pacific and California waters. But from the 1920s to the 1960s,whaling severely reduced the whale populations. Blue whales never recovered in the Northern Pacific, making sightings in this area rare. However, much larger groups of whales have been observed close to California since the 1970s.
The scientists had previously thought that the California population was separate from the population that had historically lived in North Pacific waters. But the current study shows that whales off the coast of British Columbia and the Gulf of Alaska are likely part of the California population.
To identify the blue whales, the researchers looked at photos of cetaceans taken in the North Pacific Ocean and compared them with a library of blue whale pictures taken along the West Cost of the United States and Southern Pacific. Up to now, the researchers are not quite sure why the whales are changing their migration patterns, but they suspect that the whales may be following their food moving farther north by the changes in ocean conditions.
31.According to the passage, blue whales are .
A.following a fixed route of migration
B.dying out due to commercial whaling
C.moving from the south to the north
D.rarely found in the Southern Pacific
32.The whale population in the northern Pacific .
A.is different from the California population
B.is probably part of the California population
C.has become the largest group since the 1970s
D.has lived there since the 1960s
33.The underlined word "cetaceans" in Paragraph 5 probably means .
A.land creatures B.whale species
C.ocean conditions D.migration patterns
34.What might make blue whales migrate according to the researchers
A.Commercial whaling. B.Weather conditions.
C.Life reproduction. D.Food resources.
Our Earth’s oceans contain some of the most valuable resources. As the use of fossil fuels and greenhouse gas emissions began to rise in popularity, the polluting of the Earth’s oceans did as well, leaving lifelong effects on all of its ecosystems.
Commercial whaling has left several whale species in danger of extinction. The blue whales of the Antarctic have less than one percent of their original numbers. Over 90 percent of plastic isn’t recycled, and a large part of that number finds its way into the ocean and surrounding beaches. The huge amount of plastic damages whales’ existence. Plastic is being eaten by sea life as well as entangling(缠住) them, putting them all at major risk. Without change, our Earth’s oceans will not be able to continue on for much longer.
The Delta Corporation was set up in 1972, later known as Ocean Conservancy. In the beginning years of Ocean Conservancy, its main initiative(倡议) was the Whale Protection Fund. This fund focused on saving the species and protesting against commercial whaling. They gained the support of many.
Ten years later, the International Whaling Commission finally banned commercial whaling. It then changed its focus to not only whales but to seals and sea turtles as well. Though they made great progress with these animals, they came to the conclusion that these animals cannot develop well without a healthy, sustainable environment. The workers of Ocean Conservancy then expanded their focus to the marine ecosystems and habitats.
Ocean Conservancy is one of several organizations working toward a common goal: saving the Earth’s oceans. They have started doing this by creating the Whale Protection movement that still exists. Though they have made significant progress throughout the years, there is still much to be done. Only when the common goal is shared by all groups, governments, and individuals, will real change be made. If successful, the electric bicycle meal program will be spread to all Crowne Plaza hotels in the UK, the hotel said in a statement.
35.What can we know about the plastic from Paragraph 2
A.Plastic reduces the population of whales to the least.
B.Most of plastic ends up in oceans and sandy beaches.
C.Plastic has become part of the sea animals’ diet.
D.Recycling plastic is still a big challenge.
36.What made Ocean Conservancy pay attention to the ocean ecosystem
A.A ban on whaling.
B.Its improved concept.

A.Quite a few organizations have set their own goals.
B.The days of Whale Protection movement are numbered.
C.Ocean Conservancy’s work isn’t worth the praise.
D.Saving the oceans is the shared responsibility of the whole world.
38.What can be a suitable title for the text
A.Ocean Conservancy’s Target and Development
B.Ocean Conservancy’s Contribution to Oceans’ Protecting
C.A Solution to the Oceans’ Plastic Problems
D.A Step Away from a Healthy Ecosystem

The millipede (千足虫)
Forest life
39 We enjoy watching television programs about bears, bats or monkeys. We knew a lot about their lives: how they find food or what they do at different times of the year. But what about smaller animals that are more difficult to see or film
40 A French scientist, Francois-Xavier, Joly, is studying one of them — the millipede.
The importance of leaves
When leaves begin to die in autumn, they turn from green to yellow and fall from the trees.
41 Life in the forest needs these nutrients— without them, plants could not grow and so there would be no food for other animals.
Food on the forest floor
Some living things, like mushrooms, break the leaves into smaller pieces and eat them. In a few months there is nothing left of them. But for mushrooms, not all trees are the same. Mushrooms prefer some types of leaves to others. This means that some leaves take much longer to break down than others, sometimes years. So what happens to these 42
More on the menu
The millipede also likes leaves and it eats any type. But when it has finished, it produces waste. This waste then becomes the food of mushrooms. When mushrooms eat leaves they choose only certain types — But when they eat waste, they will eat any kind. 43
So next time you are walking through a forest, remember that something may be having a meal right under your feet!
A.This is where the millipede can help.
B.However, not all leaves are equally rich.
C.Millipedes do amazing things in the soil in our forests.
D.Forests are amazing places, and so are the animals that live in them.
E.As they break down on the ground, nutrients are returned to the soil.
F.Many small animals that live in forests are very important for the soil.
G.This is how the millipede turns dead leaves into food for others and helps life continue.

Kindness can bring more kindness
Human beings are not just judged by the way we treat each other, but by the way we treat any creature that is powerless.
Martin was living on the streets in Bucaramanga, Colombia when a stranger noticed him at a local park. The passerby was so touched by what he saw that he filmed it.
The passerby saw Martin sitting on some concrete steps with two dogs wearing party hats. Martin pulled a small cake out of a plastic bag. He clapped his hands, sang happy birthday and petted his beloved companions. He lit two candles on the cake while his dogs observed him, and he gave them each a kiss on the cheek.
He then gave a slice of cake to each of his dogs on paper plates. As they ate together, Martin wiped tears from his eyes and petted his dogs some more.
After witnessing the sweet birthday party, the passerby walked up to Martin and asked him about his dogs. He learned that Martin had two dogs, Shaggy and Nena, and that they were celebrating Shaggy’s birthday.
He learned Martin had escaped an abusive home and had been living on the streets for the past several years. Shaggy and Nena were his only family and, even while he was homeless, Martin did everything he could to take care of them. “In so many years living on the street I was never alone,” Matin explained. “My dogs were always there to bring joy to many sad days.”
“My dog was celebrating his birthday,” Martin said again, “and I wanted to give him a quarter of a chicken, but I didn’t have enough money for that. Then I saw a lady who was going to throw away a cake and I told her to give it to me. She handed it to me, saying, ‘Take it, son, you make better use of it than I do.’”

M: Welcome to International News. An old lady in Paris went to the bathroom, and stayed there for ten days. What happened As she was locking the door, the lock broke. She could not open the door. She shouted for help, but no one heard her. There was nobody in the sitting room or in the kitchen or in any of the bedrooms, because her son’s family was away on holiday. After ten days, the woman’s neighbors wondered where she was. Firefighters broke into her apartment and found her very weak in the bathroom. While she was waiting to be rescued, she drank warm water, she said.
Now, let’s come to the next piece of news. A young woman was behaving strangely when she entered Bangkok Airport. When the check-in clerk X-rayed her large bag, the X-ray showed there was something that looked like an animal—it might be a cat or a dog. When the clerk opened the bag, she saw that a baby tiger was sleeping under lots of toy tigers. The tiger was taken to a center for wildlife, and the woman was taken away by the police.

The workers of Ocean Conservancy then expanded their focus to the marine ecosystems and habitats.(尽管他们在这些动物身上取得了很大的进步,但他们得出的结论是,如果没有健康、可持续的环境,这些动物就无法很好地发育。

39.由“We enjoy watching television programs about bears, bats or monkeys. We knew a lot about their lives: how they find food or what they do at different times of the year.”
40.由“But what about smaller animals that are more difficult to see or film ”但是,但是对于那些更难看到或拍摄的小动物呢?
41.由“When leaves begin to die in autumn, they turn from green to yellow and fall from the trees. ” 当树叶在秋天开始枯死时,它们从绿色变成黄色,然后从树上掉下来。所以整个分解变成营养的过程以及循环过程没有说完。所以小题3要将整个分解变成营养的过程说明完整。故E选项“当它们在地面上分解时,营养物质被返回到土壤中”符合句意。故E选项正确。
42.由“This means that some leaves take much longer to break down than others, sometimes years. So what happens to these?”
43.由“The millipede also likes leaves and it eats any type. But when it has finished, it produces waste. This waste then becomes the food of mushrooms. When mushrooms eat leaves they choose only certain types ----- But when they eat waste, they will eat any kind.”

64.In the past years, there has been a “pet fever” in China. Some people like to buy pets from breeders, while others believe that pets should be adopted from animal shelters instead of buying. Personally, I prefer the latter.
First of all, some animals in animal shelters are homeless or were abused. They have been hurt physically or mentally, so we should give them a warm home instead of letting them stay in the shelter all the time. Secondly, if we don’t like the animals we buy, we may choose to abandon them. As a result, more and more animals will enter shelters, which will be under too much pressure and difficult to run. Finally, by adopting animals, we can also save some money, which can be used to buy food for the adopted animals.

65. The kind passerby shared the video of Shaggy’s birthday party on social media. The video spread rapidly and the park became a gathering place for animal lovers. Someone gave him a phone and encouraged him to set up his own Instagram page. He did so, and today Martin has more than 175,000 followers. Martin’s compassion for his dogs touched the lives of his neighbors, and they helped Martin find a place to live with Shaggy and Nena, which completely changed his life.
Greatly touched by the strangers’ good deeds, Martin decided to pay the kindness forward. And now together with some friends, Martin spent his time volunteering and helping rescue animals living on the streets. And he also called on more people to donate extra food or supplies and set up shelters for them. So far he has helped more than one thousand homeless animals find their new homes. “My dream is to be able to use my voice to help save and rescue homeless animals,” Martin said.
