To develop one’s taste in English, the most effective way is to read English books widely. Yet one may be at a loss to choose the proper books, especially as a beginner. As a native Spanish, I would like to share some of my reading experience.
My first English novel was Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice, recommended by many English teachers and professors as an ideal book for English learners. But my experience was somewhat horrible. I had great difficulty in understanding the novel, let alone enjoying it. It’s not the vocabulary that troubled me, but rather the way Austen constructs sentences, and her way of thinking, which seemed rather unfamiliar to me at that time. My fading enthusiasm was much recovered after reading Hemingway’s novel-A Farewell to Arms. No long and puzzling sentences. And I particularly liked his brief style. So my first suggestion is, as a beginner, you’d better choose modern novels instead of classical ones.
However, if you limit yourself to novels, you will miss a lot of treasures. Besides, English essays also play a key role. They can at once inform you, entertain you, and improve your taste in English. The best example is Bertrand Russell’s work. Its language is plain, yet you cannot help feeling the elegance and the special sense of humor. His simple language enables his philosophy within the reach of ordinary people. Therefore, here comes my second suggestion-essays are also vital.
Never follow others’ recommendations and opinions blindly, however famous or influential the person might be. We should be open to various ideas, but always think independently and determine for ourselves. As a saying goes, one man’s meat is another man’s poison. With that in mind, we are bound to find out our favorite writers through reading and develop our fine taste in English.
4. What made the first English novel that the author read hard to understand
A. Difficult conversations.
B. The old-fashioned vocabulary.
C. Not knowing the social background.
D. Sentences and Austen’s way of thinking.
5. What does the underlined word “vital” in Paragraph 3 mean
A. Important. B. Challenging.
C. Typical. D. Convenient.
6. What advice does the author give in the last paragraph
A. Compare books before buying.
B. Read books that are influential.
C. Don’t blindly follow others’ choices.
D. Choose books that challenge us most.
7. What is the author’s purpose of writing the passage
A. Give comments on literature works.
B. Tell beginners how to choose English books.
C. Encourage people to read more English books.
D. Recommend first class books to English learners.

Archaeologists(考古学家)have discovered at least 58 shipwrecks(沉船)filled with ancient objects near the islands of Fournoi in the Aegean Sea between Greece and Turkey. The discovery is believed to be the largest collection of shipwrecks ever found in the Mediterranean. They gathered there over a long time period, from time of ancient Greece to the 20th century. But most of the ships are from the time of the Greek, Roman and Byzantine civilizations.
Peter Campbell is leading the underwater research of the wrecks for the RPM Nautical Foundation, a group that studies ancient objects. He said, "The excitement is difficult to describe. I mean, it was just unbelievable. We knew that we had come across something that was going to change the history books. "
The international team began the underwater study in 2015. They found 22 shipwrecks that year. That number has climbed to 58 with the latest discovery. The team believes there are even more secrets lying on the seabed below.
Campbell called it "one of the top archaeological discoveries of the century". He told Reuters, "We now have a new story to tell of a trading road that connected the ancient Mediterranean. "
The wrecks and their contents show ships carrying goods from nearby areas like the Black Sea, Greece, Turkey, Armenia and Italy. Other goods come from places farther away such as Spain, Sicily, Cyprus, Egypt, the Middle East and North Africa.
The team has raised more than 300 ancient objects from the shipwrecks, including many tall jars(广口瓶)with two ears used by ancient Greek and Roman people to carry liquid.
Campbell said, "Those jars are used mainly for transporting liquids and semi-liquids in the past, so the goods it would be transporting were mostly wine, oil, fish sauces, perhaps honey." He added that fish sauce from the Black Sea area was rare and precious in ancient times.
8. How did Peter Campbell feel about the discovery of the shipwrecks
A. Excited. B. Shocked. C. Confused. D. Terrified.
9. How many shipwrecks were found near the islands of Fournoi after 2015
A. 22. B. 36. C. 58. D. 300.
10. Which of the following might be very expensive in the ancient times
A. Oil. B. Wine. C. Honey. D. Fish sauce.
11. What is the best title for the text
A. Seabed Secrets Attracted the Archaeologists
B. New Ancient Civilizations Were Discovered
C. Ancient Shipwrecks Tell Stories of Trade Roads
D. More Shipwrecks Exist in the Mediterranean

It seems as if social media platforms have taken over our lives. According to a study, there were over 3.6 billion social media users in 2021. And that number is only expected to grow.
Although social media platforms have helped to keep friends and family connected, there is also a dark side to social media. To put it simply, it is a money making machine. This is partially because of social media influencers. A social media influencer is someone “who can shape audience’s attitudes through blogs, tweets, and the use of other social media”. You may be asking yourself, “Why would they want to do this, though ” The answer is simple: to make money. Social media influencers make money by promoting brands among their followers. In fact, influencer marketing is so profitable that the study reported that the industry is expected to reach $15 billion in value in 2022.
Social media influencers are now being called out because some of their actions have started to negatively impact the environment. One man in particular, who goes by Steve to remain anonymous (匿名的), noticed that some online influencers failed to follow rules when they went to national parks or public places. This included things like leaving garbage behind, or using drones (无人机) to take pictures from the sky.
Because of this, Steve made it his mission to stop social media influencers from hurting the environment with their bad behavior in order to get the “perfect shot”. In 2018, he made the account “Public Lands Hate You” to name and shame influencers who failed to follow the rules made to protect the environment. The account now has over 85 thousand followers.
He hoped that it could help some influencers find the light and right their wrongs. Steve said, “If everybody thought just a little bit more about their small actions and the impact those actions have on the environment and the people around them, I think that a lot of our bigger problems would be much more easily solved.”
12. What feature of social media influencers is mainly shown in paragraph 2
A. Good communication. B. Chasing profits.
C. Creative shows. D. Volunteering service.
13. How does the writer present his idea in paragraph 3
A. By giving examples. B. By offering data.
C. By making comparisons. D. By explaining reasons.
14. Why was “Public Lands Hate You” made
A. To win wide attention and attract more fans.
B. To get the influencers aware of their wrong deeds.
C. To make public places inaccessible to influencers.
D. To inform the influencers of the places for perfect shots.
15. What is implied from Steve’s words in the last paragraph
A. Well begun is half done. B. Practice makes perfect.
C. Every bit of effort counts. D. Actions speak louder than words.

【答案】12. B 13. A 14. B 15. C
