Growing up in rural Jiangsu Province, Yu Jigao showed a strong interest in fine arts at an early age and studied on his own for years. His hard work paid off later. In the early 1950s, he made his way to Nanjing Normal University, where he learned painting theories and techniques from some famous artists. It was then that Yu found his lifelong artistic passion for gongbi. Gongbi paintings usually describe birds and flowers, symbols of beauty and joy, in an artistic way with intense color.
After graduation from the art school in 1957, Yu began his professional career at the Chinese Painting Institute of Jiangsu. He has since published a series of art collections. Since 1959, Yu has contributed a series of works to many important sites. Yu’s works have also been displayed in a range of national and international exhibitions. From 1986 to 1997, he held his exhibitions in such places as Beijing, Guangzhou and New York. Both the themes and artistic techniques have won widespread praise in the past years.
While observing traditional rules, he uses accurate lines, powerful brush movements as well as the interplay between dark and light to represent the harmony of nature. Though he adopts a realistic style, he tries to enrich his works with spiritual beauty through his brush. Yu says, “That feeling turns into the images of singing birds and elegant flowers in my paintings.” Thanks to his careful observation of nature and artistic sensitivity, Yu is able to combine realistic description with artistic expression in his brushwork.
Now as deputy director of the Academy of Chinese Gongbi Painting of Flowers and Birds and a national top-level artist, Yu maintains a simple and easy-going style. In addition to artistic creation, Yu has devoted himself to promoting his painting style as the cultural heritage of China. “Art is part of my life,” Yu says. “I am proud to be a flower-bird painter. I hope to create a bright future for it through my efforts.”

Everyone knows how to fake a smile. We learn when to show and hide our genuine emotions from early face-to-face exchanges. As we grow, we have been developing a social smile to hide unacceptable emotions.
The social smile is often activated automatically. We may not be fully aware of it. We might smile to put the brakes on showing too much negative emotion in public. We may maintain a calm, relaxed smile to prevent fear from upwelling and getting the best of us. We can also intentionally use the social smile to pepper our communication.
Now that many of us are wearing face masks in public, how does it influence our communication of emotion
Some people are finding it a relief. Those suffering from social anxiety may welcome wearing face masks precisely because they prefer to veil their emotional state from the outside world as much as possible. Others appreciate the freedom from the obligation to put others at ease with a warm, friendly smile. By wearing a face mask, you don’t have to smile if you don’t feel like it.
However, without the social smile, it may be more challenging to manage others’ reactions to us. How do we react to seeing someone wearing a mask Research finds that observers rely mostly on the eye and mouth regions to recognize emotions successfully. Different emotions are most easily detected in different areas of the face. When the whole face is visible, we focus on the eyes to spot sadness and fear, whereas disgust and happiness are more reliably detected by concentrating on the mouth area. These two parts of the face can work in isolation or complex coordination.
The face mask only hides the fake smiles, not the real ones. Consider that by only seeing the eyes, it may be easier to get an accurate read of people’s genuine emotions.
8. Why do we fake a smile sometimes
A. To be socially acceptable.
B. To show one’s kindness.
C. To prevent hurting others.
D. To take up a positive attitude.
9. What is the impact of wearing face masks
A. It relieves some people of social obligation.
B. It puts one at ease with a decent manner.
C. It may bring some trouble in communication.
D. It allows people to express emotions at will.
10. What idea does the author try to present in the last two paragraphs
A. Mouth area reflects positive emotions while eyes negative.
B. True feelings can’t be recognized without observing the eyes.
C. Eyes and mouth regions work separately to express one’s emotions.
D. Eyes are the window to the soul and reveal one’s true emotional state.
11. Which of the following would be the best title for the text
A. What is Social Smile
B. Smile: Real or Fake
C. To Wear or Not to Wear
D. Masking Genuine Emotions

About five weeks ago, I noticed the skin of our pet lizard was growing dusty. It worried me. I reported the strange surface on the skin of the lizard to my husband and children the next morning. Seconds later, our lizard emerged from its tank with its old skin flowing behind it.
I didn’t think about it much until a morning last week when I knocked my favorite teapot off the table. It burst into hundreds of pieces. As I swept up the mess, I wondered why we had been breaking so many things over the months.
The destruction started three months ago. It was my husband’s birthday. He had just lost his job. The uncertainty was starting to wear on us, so I wanted to do something special.
“Let’s make a cake for Dad!” I cried.
My kids screamed with joy. We baked, iced and sprinkled for most of the day. Candles on the cake! Balloons on the walls! Flowers on the table!
Two hours before my husband came back home from another job interview, my daughter climbed up to grab a glass vase from a high shelf. It fell and crashed beside the cake. Tiny pieces of glass were everywhere. She sobbed loudly as I threw the cake away. My husband had banana pudding for his birthday.
Three days ago, the light in our living room suddenly went out. After several frustrating hours of unsuccessful attempts to fix it, my husband suggested watching the Michael Jordan documentary series The Last Dance.
The poignancy of Jordan retiring from his beloved basketball to play baseball and what had pushed him to make such a tough decision took me by surprise. As I watched him take off his basketball uniform and replace it with a baseball uniform, I saw him leaving behind the layer that no longer served him, just as our lizard had.
Neither of them chose the moment that had transformed them. But they had to live with who they were after everything was different. Just like us. I realized that we have to learn to leave the past behind.
Humans do not shed skin as easily as other animals. The beginning of change is upsetting. The process is tiring. Damage changes us before we are ready. I see our lizard, raw and nearly new.
Jordan said that no matter how it ends, it starts with hope. With our tender, hopeful skin, that is where we begin.
12. Why did the author’s husband have banana pudding for his birthday
A. Pudding was his favorite dessert. B. The author made good puddings.
C. The birthday cake was ruined. D. They couldn’t afford a birthday cake.
13. Why does the author mention The Last Dance in the passage
A. To develop the theme. B. To define a concept.
C. To prove a theory. D. To provide the background.
14. The underlined part “leaving behind the layer” in Paragraph 8 can be understood as .
A. giving up an opportunity B. looking for a new job
C. getting rid of a bad habit D. letting go of the past
15. What does the author most likely want to tell us
A. Love of family helps us survive great hardships.
B. We should move on no matter what happens.
C. It’s not the end of the world if we break things.
D. Past experiences should be treasured.

14. The underlined part “leaving behind the layer” in Paragraph 8 can be understood as .
A. giving up an opportunity B. looking for a new job
C. getting rid of a bad habit D. letting go of the past

B. We should move on no matter what happens.
C. It’s not the end of the world if we break things.
D. Past experiences should be treasured.
