Watching wooden dolls come to life may not be one of the most popular forms of entertainment today, but with over twenty years' experience, talented puppeteer(木偶表演者)Peter Roberts has earned himself the title “master puppeteer” because of his great ability to turn puppets into believable, almost living characters. “People are quite often surprised to hear what I do for a living and have little appreciation of puppetry as a form of entertainment. While the exact origins of puppet theatre are unknown,it has been popular in many cultures and may have been the very first kind of theatre,"he explains.
Roberts' shows are highly original. “A puppet show can involve anything from clowning(扮蠢相逗乐)to storytelling,” he says. Equally diverse are the audiences he performs for. “Some are attracted by the puppets themselves, while others enjoy the dialogue.” Roberts believes that this form of entertainment can be appreciated by people of all ages and cultures.
Roberts' interest in puppets started when he received some beautiful glove puppets one Christmas. He started putting on shows with these for family and friends and then moved on to handmade Chinese string puppets. Learning mostly from books and personal experience,he explains,"I was already spending most of my free time carving puppets and putting on shows,so I hardly noticed the change from a student to a full-time professional puppeteer."
The puppets are designed specifically for each show, which is extremely time-consuming. According to Roberts,"Sometimes what you expect and what you actually create in the end are two very different things. I've made some of my best puppets ‘accidentally'.”
When most people hear the word "puppetry",they more than likely think of a way of keeping children entertained at birthday parties. Certainly the subject matter will be expected to be light-hearted rather than serious. However,Roberts wants to point out that the mouths of puppets convey serious messages sometimes.

[山东潍坊一中2021高二期中]A student-led push to get solar panels installed at a middle school in Tacoma is receiving national recognition from a clean energy non-profit organisation called Generation 180.The girls involved are advocating and fundraising for the project.
Sammy Firkins,Gwen Newport and Annie Son will talk about their idea to generate solar electricity at Jason Lee Middle School in a panel discussion organised by Generation 180.In 2019,the three of them teamed up with their science teacher,Kathy Hall,to push for solar panels to be installed. Hall, who uses solar power at her own house, said it's long been a dream of hers. The school would be the first in the Tacoma district to use solar energy.
The girls presented their idea to Gov. Jay Inslee's STEM Education Innovation Alliance meeting in early 2019 and received enthusiastic support. They then spoke to the Tacoma school board and obtained buy-in from the district, though they were told the district did not have the roughly $200,000 for the 277 solar panels and that they would have to fundraise. They've since raised more than half that amount through grants and individual donations.
Gwen Newport said she's always cared a lot about environmental issues and that she's troubled that climate change does not get the attention it deserves. "At this point,I feel like it's kind of been given to my generation almost as our responsibility now and so being able to be a part of this project and take action is really important to me," she said.
The solar panels have not been installed at the school yet. But Hall said she estimated that the project would reduce the school's power costs by about $14,000 a year, and that it also would serve an educational purpose. "We will have live data always streaming availably so that people can see how the panels are working and how they relate to the amount of electricity we're using, and it will be an incredible learning tool," she said.
1. What is Generation 180
A. It is the name of the girls' team.
B. It is a project to use solar power.
C. It is a non-profit environmental group.

2. What is the third paragraph mainly about
A. The girls raised enough money for the project.
B. The Tacoma school board rejected the project.
C. The girls made great efforts to fulfil the project.
D. The district covered the expenses of solar panels.
3. How does Gwen Newport feel about climate change
A. Confident.
B. Concerned.
C. Relieved.
D. Content.
4. What is the main purpose of the project

The term “first aid” is now an accepted part of everyday language, and there is no doubt that it's about the help given to sick and injured people.1
The first recorded history of first aid dates back to 1099,when religious knights(骑士)were trained in medical care.
The Order of St John, which was the predecessor(前身)of St John Ambulance organisation, only worked on the treatment of battlefield injuries.2
In the mid 19th century the first Geneva Convention and the International Red Cross were created to protect and deal with sick and injured soldiers on the battlefields.3 He suggested training ordinary people in what was called “pre-medical treatment” 4 Surgeon Major Peter Shepherd and a doctor Coleman ran the first public first aid course at Woolwich Presbyterian Church,London in January 1878.
During the First and Second World Wars, the British Red Cross and St John Ambulance joined forces to form the Joint War Organization and played a major role in support of the medical services, both on the battlefields abroad and in Britain.
Modern-day pre-hospital treatment of the sick and injured has advanced rapidly in recent years due to the latest medical research and equipment such as high-tech ambulances.5
A. No one knows when the words “first aid" came into use.
B. Many lives will be saved if first aid is given immediately.
C.A short time later,an army surgeon first came up with an idea.
D. They are the first recorded examples of people trained to do first aid.
E. However, where did "first aid" originate from and who were the “first aiders”?
F. But the basic aim of first aid today is exactly the same as that of the 1lth century's medical knights.
G. In 1878,the term “first aid” first appeared in Britain and is thought to be from “first treatment” and “National Aid”.

I was a single mother of four children with a low-paid job. Money was always valuable, but we had a roof over our heads, food on the table, and clothes on our backs. I always tell myself to be brave and strong, just for my four children. I hope all my efforts would be worthwhile,as long as my children can grow up healthily. It was Christmas time. We drove downtown to see the Christmas lights, and enjoyed a special dinner, but the big excitement for the kids was the fun of Christmas shopping at the mall. This was a tradition of my family,so they all looked forward to the coming of the season. They talked and planned for weeks ahead of time, asking each other what they wanted for Christmas.
The big day arrived and we started out early. I gave each of the four kids a twenty-dollar bill and asked them to search for gifts. Then everyone scattered(散开)with the bill. I sat at a table in a cafe waiting for my children and enjoying an instant of silence. It must be a happy day.
Back in the car driving home, everyone was excited about Christmas, laughing and asking each other about what they had bought. I noted Ginger,my younger daughter, had only one small and flat bag with her. I could see enough through the plastic bag to tell that she had bought candy bars-fifty-cent candy bars! What did she do with that twenty-dollar bill I had given her?I was so angry. After getting home,I called her into my bedroom and closed the door. I couldn't hold back my anger and shouted at her,"What about the rest of the money? No one would be convinced all these candies are worth 20 dollars. What do you want to do with the rest of the money?"

Though she only left herself some candy bars, she felt that it was worthwhile.
My anger disappeared. Never had I thought my daughter had her own idea to help others. I felt regretful that I had shouted at her. How I wish I had listened to her explanation first. I said,“Oh,dear,it is your own right to do what you want with the money. Whatever you do,I should be supportive. Forgive me!"She said nothing but smiled at me. I had never felt so proud as I did that day.
