For Helen, the single mom of four-year-old Luna, money was always tight. As Christmas drew nearer, she kept thinking about how she would not make her daughter d . Finally, Helen had thought of having Luna send a letter to Santa Claus (圣诞老人) by balloon, saying Santa would catch the balloon during his flight through the air on his sled (雪橇).
Helen helped Luna write down all the things she dreamed—candies, a Spider-Man ball, a doll, etc., and then put the p into a red balloon. It was a cold morning. As they released the wishes to the sky, Luna whispered, "Dear Santa, please do find and take my balloon with you soon, will you " The thing was, Helen herself hadn't expected anyone to find the balloon.
After a simple Christmas, the calendar turned to another year. One day in January, a friend called Helen e , "Log onto (登录) Facebook! Guess what A man called Alvin found Luna's balloon! He wants to send Luna gifts!"
In surprise, Helen logged onto Facebook and then she saw Alvin had posted (发布) the pictures of Luna's red balloon and note, asking about Luna. Thousands of people from all over the country reposted them. Some commented in Alvin's page, "Back then we were just like Luna. We had also hoped in our childhood that magic Santa would show up in front of us and realize our dream after hearing our pray. Why don't we just act as Santa o this time and bring magic to little Luna Alvin, please count us in!" Helen went over all the posts in tears. Loneliness and helplessness had tailed her all the way, but they were g for the first time. A stream of warmth flowed inside her.
Helen contacted Alvin who had gone all the way to find her family for the past one month and told Luna, "Santa d your balloon by accident. But how lucky you are! One of his elves (精灵) found it and will help realize your dream!"
Who could have ever imagined that a balloon would bring the s this close In April, Alvin headed to Helen. That morning, just as chilly as the day Luna released her balloon, in front of Helen's house, Alvin and his wife got out of the car with a box full of gifts in their hands. Luna ran out to meet them happily. "Is this what you wanted for Christmas, Luna " Helen asked. "Absolutely!" Luna exclaimed.

In nature, you may see many insects and animals of different colors. Have you ever wondered why Locusts(蝗虫)are super delicious f for birds, but it is not always an easy job for birds to catch them. It is neither because locusts are good jumpers or runners nor because they are smarter than their enemies. The reason is that the colors of locusts c with the colors of crops. When crops are young, locusts look green. But when autumn comes, locusts change to the yellow and brown color as crops do.
Brown bears, tigers and other animals move quietly through forests. They can't be seen e by their enemies. This is because they have colors similar to the trees. For the same reason, polar bears that live on a land of snow and ice are white. Butterflies and bees living among the flowers are colorful like flowers. Soil insects are mostly dark-colored and they live under the soil(土壤)in a dark and wet e . However, insects with colors different from plants can easily be found and eaten by others. So in order to s , they have to hide themselves in the daytime and appear only at night.
Have you ever noticed some even stranger acts The ink fish(墨鱼)in the sea can send out some very black ink when it faces danger. As the ink spreads over, its enemies will find t suddenly in a dark world. At the same time the ink fish immediately swims away. That is how it keeps itself s though it is not strong at all.

We are now living in the modern society. Most of the energy we use for heating, lighting, transportation and manufacturing comes from fossil fuels. These are carbon-based fuels from oil, coal and natural gas. When we burn these fuels we release heat which p the energy.
There are three main disadvantages to using these fuels. Firstly, they are causing climate problems because of the G Effect. When we burn fossil fuels they produce carbon dioxide which causes global warming. Secondly, when we have used up all our coal, oil and natural gas, we will have
n left to burn. Thirdly, they are not very efficient. The internal combustion engine (内燃机)that we use in most cars, trucks and buses, for example, is only about 14% efficient.
Scientists are working on another fuel — hydrogen. There are a couple of advantages to using hydrogen as a fuel. Firstly, because two-thirds of the e surface is water and water is made of hydrogen and oxygen. There is an almost unlimited supply of hydrogen. Secondly, burning hydrogen does not cause global warming. Thirdly, it is much more efficient than carbon-based fuels.
Unfortunately there are problems with hydrogen at the present time:there is the problem of separating (分离)it from water c , and there is the difficulty of storing it. It can be stored under pressure but high pressure tanks are far from safe. It can also be stored as a liquid but only at extremely low temperatures. It seems likely, therefore, that there will have to be a completely new technology before hydrogen replaces fossil fuels. S these problems is an urgent (急迫的)matter. Although China, India and Australia have huge amounts of cheap coal, and there are still l oil and gas reserves(储藏量)elsewhere, the effects on the planet's climate will be bad if they are used.

Five tips for less plastic
The world has a plastic problem—and it is increasing. Scientists are working to find a long-term solution by making plastic more biodegradable (可生物降解的). But in the meantime, here are five things you can do to r plastic waste now.
⒈Stop using plastic bags. Instead, take your own reusable shopping bag to the store. People use a trillion plastic bags worldwide every year. About 10 percent are used in the United States alone. That's almost one bag per American per day, but the a Dane (丹麦人) uses four single-use bags per year. In 1993, Denmark was the first country to place a tax on plastic bags. Today, other Countries (such as Chile, Kenya and New Zealand) either make customers pay for plastic bags, or have banned (禁止)them c .
⒉Skip the straw. Today, around 8.3 billion plastic straws pollute the world's beaches. So when you order a drink, say "no" to the reusable straw, or bring your own reusable one. In 2018, Seattle became the first major U. S. city to ban plastic straws and many other cities are set to follow its e .
⒊Don't use plastic bottles. Buy a reusable bottle and fill it with any t of drink you like. Some cities have already banned bottled water. However, people still buy nearly a million plastic bottles every minute in the world.
⒋A plastic packaging. Buy bar soap instead of liquid soap in plastic containers. Don't buy fruit or vegetables in plastic packaging. In the U. K, leaders are calling for supermarkets to have plastic-free areas. They also want to tax plastic take-out containers.
⒌Recycle.We can't recycle all plastic items, but it is p to recycle most bottles and milk or juice cartons. Today, Norway recycles 97 percent of its plastic bottles. How Machines at most supermarkets take the bottles and give a refund of up to 2. 5 kroner (32 cents) per bottle.

Unless you are one of those rare people with an excellent memory, you probably have trouble remembering the names of people you have just met. This problem can be frustrating and embarrassing. F , there are a number of ways you can overcome this human weakness.
Before examining the methods to help remember people's names, let's look at the reasons why we are so f in the first place. Researchers think it's due to a lack of motivation. People are better at remembering things that they want to learn. To put it simply, you're just not that i . Another reason is that putting a new face to a name is more complicated than we think, which leads to another problem. We usually don't make the effort to m new names immediately. Not only that, but when meeting someone new, we may be thinking about other things and not be paying enough attention.
All of this means that we need to take measures to avoid the embarrassment of forgetting a person's name. One good method is to say a person's name when you g them and also repeat it silently to yourself a few times. This type of repetition is essential for learning any type of skill. Using a memory method, such as l individual names with something else, also helps. For example, if someone's name is Ben and he is tall, you can label him (to yourself, of course)"Big Ben." In addition, focusing on people and listening more closely when you meet them will assist you in recalling their names. Although forgetting name isn't a matter of life or death, it's uncomfortable. Putting these t into practice will help you better avoid this social discomfort.

If you think of the jobs that robots could never do, you would probably put doctors and teachers at the top of the list. It's easy to imagine robot cleaners and factory workers, but others need human connection and creativity. But are we underestimating (低估) what robots can do In some cases, they already p better than doctors at diagnosing illness. Also, some patients might feel more c sharing their private information with a machine than a person. Could there be a place for robots in education after all
British education expert Anthony Seldon thinks so. And he even has a date for the robot takeover of the classroom: 2027. He p robots will do most work of transferring information and teachers will be like assistants. Intelligent robots will read students' faces, movements and maybe even brain s . Then they will adapt the information to each student. It's not a popular opinion and it's unlikely robots will ever understand other people's feelings and be able to really connect with humans like another human can.
One thing is certain, though. A robot teacher is better than no teacher at all. Teachers all over the world are l . In some parts of the world, there aren't enough teachers and 9 to 16 percent of children under the age of 14 don't go to school. That problem could be partly solved by robots because they can teach anywhere and won't suffer from stress, or get t , or move somewhere for an easier, higher-paid job.
Teaching is generally recognized as difficult and teachers feel overworked. Perhaps the question is not "Will robots take the place of teachers " but "How can robots help teachers " Office workers can use software to do things like organize and answer emails, arrange meetings and update calendars. Teachers waste a lot of time doing non-teaching work, i more than 11 hours a week marking homework. If robots could cut the time teachers spend marking homework and writing reports, teachers would have more time and energy for the parts of the job humans do best.

When you're bored, what will you do first If you're like many, the answer is quite simple: You reach for your phone. Five minutes of short videos or funny pictures seem like a p break.
If that sounds familiar, a new study has bad news. Reaching for your phone is likely to leave you feeling more bored. The problem isn't taking a break. The problem is your phone. A research shows using phones can't help people r from their heavy work.
To figure out the r between phones and boredom, the research team installed (安装)an app on the phones of 83 volunteers to find out how often they used their phones. They also asked these volunteers to keep diaries for three days, recording their level of boredom every hour " Phone breaks were frequent (频繁的): In the 20 minutes following each questionnaire, the volunteers picked up their phones 52 percent of the time. They spent an average of around 90 seconds on it each time," reports the research team." The more tired we are, the most l we are to reach for our phones. While we look to our phones to relieve boredom, screen time seemed to i feelings of boredom. The volunteers actually reported higher levels of boredom after having used their smartphones."
The research team pointed out that phone breaks may end up being more tiring than stimulating. In other words, watching the funny videos is very nice, but it's now w the cost to your brain in effort and concentration. In addition, picking up your phone might remind you that you have a better choice to do something else if you don't have to finish the tasks immediately. Both your time and effort are easily wasted.
What should we do i Taking a walk is good exercise. Calling someone can make your mood cheerful. Reading a book gives your brain a fresh start. You can do many things like that. Just remember, don't reach for your phone!

Many years ago, when I was fresh out of school and working in Denver, I was driving to my parents' home in Missouri for Christmas. I stopped at a gas station (加油站) about 50 miles from Oklahoma City, w I was planning to stop to visit a friend. While I was standing in line at the cash register (收款台), I said hello to an older couple w were also paying for gas.
I took off, but had gone only a few miles when black smoke poured from the back of my car. I stopped and wondered w I should do. A car pulled up behind me. It was the couple I had spoken to at the gas station. They said they would take me to my friend's. We chatted on the way to the city, and when I got out of the car, the husband gave me his business card.
I wrote him and his wife a thank-you note for helping me. Soon afterward, I r a Christmas present from them. Their note that came with it said that helping me had m their holiday meaningful.
Years later, I drove to a meeting in a nearby town in the morning. In late afternoon I returned to my car and found that I'd left the lights on all day, and the battery (电池) was dead. Then I n that the Friendly Ford dealership—a shop selling cars—was right next door. I walked over and found two salesmen in the showroom.
"Just how friendly is Friendly Ford " I asked and explained my trouble. They quickly drove a pickup truck to my car and started it. They would a (no payment, so when I got home, I wrote them a note to say thanks. I received a letter back from one of the salesmen. No one had ever taken the time to write to him and say thank you, and it meant a lot, he said.
"Thank you"—two powerful words. They're easy to say and mean so much.
