I had been working for a company in Australia for more than ten years. I had just found a better job and I knew that the manager would be disappointed when I was leaving. I recently became friends with a young man who had just migrated(移民)to Australia to escape war in his homeland. He was unskilled and was finding life difficult as he was unemployed
The manager asked me to introduce someone who I thought could do the job just as well as me,so I took this opportunity to arrange an interview for my new friend. However in the end. he was not offered the job after the interview.
Later I asked the manager why my friend was turned down. The manager thought that his English was not good enough for the position, but I suggested that my friend would be a good choice for the company since I could train him. I believed that once given the time to learn,he could do the job. After a week’s training,he was employed and was happy with his position.
I knew how the terrible war had forced him to leave his homeland and what price he had paid for doing so. I appreciate being asked to live in Australia and believe that this appreciation is best proved by offering acts of kindness to people in need of help. The smile of appreciation from this man continues to motivate me to be kind.

The park bench was deserted as I sat down to read beneath the branches of an old tree, with good reason to frown, for the world was dragging me down. At this time,a boy approached me. He stood right before ore me and said with great excitement Look what I found.
In his hand was a flower, and what a pitiful sight, with its petals(花瓣)all worn. Wanting him to take his flower and go off to play,I faked a small smile and then turned to the other side.
But instead of leaving,he sat next to my side and placed the flower to his nose and declared, “It really smells pretty and it’s beautiful, too. That’s why I picked it. Here,it’s for you.”
The flower before me was dying or dead. But I knew I must take it,or he might never leave. So I reached for the flower, and replied, “Just what I need.”
But instead of placing the flower in my hand,he held it in mid-air it was then that I noticed that the boy was blind.
Eyes misty,I heard my voice quiver(轻微颤抖),and at the same time my tears shone like the sun. As I thanked him for picking the very best one he smiled and said. “You’re welcome.” And then he ran off to play, unaware of the impact he’d had on me.
I sat there and wondered how he managed to see a self-pitying woman beneath an old tree amongst all those in the park. Perhaps from his heart,he’d been blessed with true sight .
Through the eyes of the blind boy,I could see the problem was not with the world;the problem was me. And for all of those times I had been blind. from now on,I vowed to see beauty and appreciate every second. Then I held the flower up to my nose and breathed its fragrance and smiled as that young boy.

If someone tells you to remember a phone number or address it feels like an easy task at first. You repeat the numbers to yourself, either aloud or in your mind. But after just a few seconds you might find yourself starting to doubt our own memory. 1 Thus, it will try to throw away information that seems old or irrelevant. There are ways of helping our minds retain(记住)information, however, and in this activity you will explore ways that we lose and keep memories.
Short-term or working memory, is a way of describing most people's abilities to store a small amount of information for a brief period of time in a readily accessible form. 2 People don’t have to stop and think to remember something in short-term memory.
3 Such techniques include visualizing(使形象化)the information in a surprising way and linking pieces of information together so that one reminds you of the other. In the case of visualizing information this could be as simple as remembering you parked your car on the fifth floor in the D section by picturing five dogs sitting in your car! 4 If you need to purchase cereal(谷物),milk, fruit, cheese and eggs, you could imagine the cereal in a bowl with milk pouring over it and pieces of fruit on top. Then imagine cracking an egg over everything, and it’s full of melted cheese! These may seem simple or even silly. 5 In this activity you’ll test the recall of a few friends or family members, and learn a few tricks for improving memory!
A. There are many techniques for improving memory.
B. Our brain is always seeking new and useful information.
C Short-term memory has the short duration but is quickly and easily accessed.
D. In addition, linking information could help you remember your grocery list.
E. Retaining the information over longer periods of time becomes difficult yet.
F. Your short-term memory has a limited amount of space to store information.
G. However, they are proved to be good ways of improving memory by scientists.
