One part of the oath (誓言) taken by physicians requires us to “remember that there is art to medicine, and that warmth, sympathy and understanding may outweigh the surgeon’s knife or the chemist’s drug.” When I, along with my medical school class, recited that oath at my white coat ceremony a year ago, I admit that I was more focused on the biomedical aspects than the “art”.
Actually, medical professionals can get too easily caught up in treating to remember there is still space for healing. As doctors learn to communicate with patients beyond the restricted language of physical indicators, drug protocols and surgical interventions that may go against healing, they are reaching for new tools — poetry.
One clinical trial studied the effect of music or poetry on the pain, depression, and hope scores of 65 adult patients under cancer treatment. They found that both types of art therapy (疗法) produced similar improvements in pain and depression scores. Only poetry, however, increased hope scores. Researchers assumed that poetry can break the so-called law of silence, according to which talking about one’s perception of illness is taboo. After listening to poetry, one participant said, “I feel calmer when I hear those words. They show me that I’m not alone.”
Insights like these are already making their way into the clinic. Sarah Friebert runs a care center where children are visited by a writer who helps them create poems and stories for publication. Eric Elshtain uses poetry on the wards to teach children the power of self-expression. He’s found that many of his patients write haikus about things like sports or their favorite stuffed animal, rather than their experience in a hospital bed. Poetry, as he said, is a way to both accept the hospital encounter and escape from it.
While a poem a day won’t cure, it might help relieve. I’ve decided that I’ll learn how to meet my patients beyond the chart documents; that Fil encourage them to write their own stories; that I will heal as well as treat. In other words, I’ll honor each and every word in the oath I took last year.
24.According to the text, the author is probably________.
A.a young poet B.a clinical expert
C.a medical student D.an experienced physician
25.What insight can we gain from the clinical trial in paragraph 3
A.Music works better in reducing depression.

26.What can we infer about the author according to the last paragraph
A.He will change his career path. B.He will well remember the oath.
C.He begins to take his work seriously. D.He has better understood his job.
27.Where is the text taken from
A.A news report. B.A research paper.
C.A public speech. D.An application letter.

A new study suggests that smoke from wildfires can change how clouds store water and could lead to less rainfall. The research comes as western parts of the United States are currently experiencing drought conditions after several years of intense wildfire activity.
Clouds contain a collection of water droplets (微滴) that form from vapor in the atmosphere. When these droplets condense (凝结) onto each other within a cloud, they become heavier and eventually fall as rain. But the water condensation process requires a solid substance for the vapor to attach to. Different kinds of particles rising up from the Earth’s surface can reach clouds and make this process possible.
The new study found that smoke from wildfires contains small particles that affect the way droplets form in clouds. The main effect was the number of water droplets formed. The team reported that smoky clouds contained about five times the number of droplets as non-smoky clouds. But data also showed that the droplets in smoky clouds were much smaller, about half the size of those in the clouds without wildfire smoke.
It is that size difference, the researchers say, that could reduce the amount of rainfall. This is because small droplets are less likely to grow and eventually fall to the ground as rain. “Because of their small droplet sizes, these smoky clouds are expected to reflect more light and produce less rain than clouds in clean air,” the study states.
The findings could mean that active wildfire seasons in the western U. S. may in fact lead to less rain and more drought, the researchers said. “We were surprised at how effective these primarily organic particles were at forming cloud droplets and what large impacts they had on the microphysics (微观物理) of the clouds,” said Cynthia Twohy, leader of the new study.
Twohy also noted that different kinds of clouds behave differently. The current study examined changes in small cumulus clouds. Other kinds that sit much higher in the atmosphere can cause heavy storms, she said. Twohy added, “I am hoping these results will lead to detailed regional modeling studies that will help us understand the actual impact of smoke on clouds and climate.”
28.Why did the researchers conduct the study
A.They aren’t sure how water droplets form from vapor.
B.There is a great climate change in America.
C.The US has serious drought after wildfires.
D.They wonder how smoky clouds appear.
29.What is a characteristic of smoky clouds
A.They tend to reflect more light.
B.They often have lower temperatures than others.
C.They contain more droplets which are larger in size.
D.They have fewer particles for the vapor to attach to.
30.What could smoky clouds lead to according to the text
A.Less rainfall.
B.Much cooler weather.
C.Fewer windy days.
D.More storms.
31.What is the main idea of the text
A.There are many reasons for the US drought.
B.Wildfire smoke can make clouds produce less rain.
C.Organic particles play an important role in forming clouds.
D.Humans have to face the serious consequences of wildfires.

A company in Yancheng, Jiangsu province, reportedly introduced an internal document requiring all employees to stop using iPhones. Those who continue using iPhones could lose their jobs while those who switch to Huawei would get subsidies, the document said.
Asked why, a senior company executive said the move was to ensure the security of information and commercial secrets, and to encourage all to support domestic brands. Some enterprises and agencies might have security concerns, but for the company involved that seems unlikely, and it seems to be more of a publicity ploy.
There have been instances in the past, too, of other private companies forbidding employees from using iPhones and insisting they support Chinese brands.
At a time when the United States government is forcing US companies to stop doing business with Huawei, it is good to see Chinese compatriots (同胞) supporting Chinese brands. However, it isn’t Apple that is stopping supplying chips and other high-tech parts to Huawei. It is US politicians. The president has also issued executive orders to shut down Tik Tok so as to force it to sell its US businesses to an American company.
The best way to support Chinese companies is to speak out against those US politicians. It is advisable, for example, to create awareness among friends in the US about the ways in which these politicians are harming both Chinese and US interests.
Boycotting US brands such as Apple is not at all advisable. It not only violates (侵犯) an individual’s personal right to choose what he or she likes, it also creates a lot of misunderstanding. Of course, organizations that deal with critical information can ask their employees to use domestic brands. But that must be done legally.
Even Huawei founder Ren Zhengfei said that patriotism should not decide whether one wants an iPhone or a Huawei. He said that he had bought Apple computers for his family and that his company must learn from its competitors.
32.The underlined word “subsidies” in Paragraph 1 probably means .
A.jobs
B.bonus
C.punishment
D.compliment
33.Why did the company require its employees to stop using iPhones according to its leadership
A.They thought the company’s secret information might be stolen by iPhones.
B.They felt guilt and shame at using iPhones.
C.They had to obey the order of the local government.
D.They thought using iPhones was an act of showing off.
34.According to the passage all the following statements are true EXCEPT that________.
A.some enterprises and individuals don’t use iPhones to take their patriotic stand
B.Apple is stopping supplying chips to Huawei
C.boycotting US brands is not at all wise and appropriate
D.Ren Zhengfei and his family also use Apple products
35.Which of the following can be the best title of the passage
A.We Need to Unite Against Using iPhones
B.One Company Ploy Matters to One Country’s Future
C.Can’t Force Huawei to Be Apple of One’s Eye
D.Chinese Compatriots - Let’s Switch to Huawei

In the Game
“I’m gonna play basketball, Daddy.” My daughter, Lauren, whooped, skipping into the room. “There are only eleven girls in Verden, and everybody makes the team.”
High-school sports is the biggest thing that happens in Verden, so I shouldn’t have been surprised when Lauren announced she was going out for the girls’ basketball teams—Lady Tiger. But I was. My wife and I never told Lauren that she was disabled. We didn’t want her to feel different from other children. She has Down syndrome
What if the other girls on the team failed to accept her What if Lauren spent most of her time on the bench What if she got injured during the game What should I say to the coach
The next afternoon, I parked by the basketball court.
“Hey, Johnny,” Coach Forthythe called. “We’re glad Lauren came out for the team.”
“Well, Mr. Forthythe, you know we don’t expect you to play her in a game. just include her when you can.”
The game arrived the next Sunday. I settled into a seat on the second row with my wife. Moments later, a train of girls chugged out of the locker room. Last in line was Lauren. I stood along with the crowd and clapped. She searched the stands. spotted us and waved broadly.
The game got off to a good start, but soon Verden was behind. I gazed at Lauren, the most excited on the team. She slapped (拍打) her knee when the opponents scored. Her arms moved around in the air each time Verden shot. Even though she wasn’t playing, she looked as if she were having the time of her life. Now, I felt admiration for my daughter. Her team was getting beat, yet she still enjoyed the action.
Just less than two minutes were left, and Verden was down by 17 points. Coach called a time-out. Then boomed the announcer’s voice, “Number thirty-three, Lauren, in for the Lady Tigers.”

Duolingo is a free language-learning website and app. It offers ad-free courses for those who want to learn a new language. As of 2016, Duolingo has fifty-nine different language courses for twenty-three languages. Over 120 million people are registered with the program. Duolingo was created in 2011 by Professor Luis von Ahn and his graduate student Severin Hacker, who was born in Switzerland. Prof. Luis von Ahn was born in Guatemala, and he was upset by how expensive it was for people in his town to learn English. He wanted to create a program that offered free education to anyone in the world. Because most of the services are available free of charge, Duolingo originally used a special business model to make money. Members of the public were able to translate content and vote on correct translations. The content came from large websites such as BuzzFeed and CNN.com, which paid Duolingo to translate their webpages. Many private investors have given money to the company, including actor Ashton Kutcher’s firm. Duolingo has also been used in public schools in Costa Rica and Guatemala.

根据第一段中“One part of the oath(誓言)taken by physicians requires us to “remember that there is art to medicine, and that warmth, sympathy and understanding may outweigh the surgeon’s knife or the chemist’s drug.”(医生宣誓的一部分要求我们“记住,医学是艺术,温暖、同情和理解可能比外科医生的刀或化学家的药更重要。”)”以及后文的“When I, along with my medical school class, recited that oath at my white coat ceremony a year ago.( 一年前,当我和医学院的同学们一起,在我的白大褂典礼上,背诵了这个誓言。)”
根据第三段中“They found that both types of art therapy(疗法)produced similar improvements in pain and depression scores. Only poetry, however, increased hope scores.(他们发现,这两种艺术疗法对疼痛和抑郁评分的改善程度相似。然而,只有诗歌提高了希望分数。)”可知,在临床试验的研究中,诗歌对于疼痛和抑郁有着改善作用,即诗歌使人们对自己的疾病敞开心扉。故选B。
26.推理判断题。根据第一段中“When I, along with my medical school class, recited that oath at my white coat ceremony a year ago, I admit that I was more focused on the biomedical aspects than the “art”.( 一年前,当我和医学院的同学们一起在毕业典礼上宣读这一誓言时,我承认我更关注生物医学方面,而不是“艺术”。)”可知,此时的作者并没有明白诗歌朗诵在治疗方面起到的积极作用,同时根据最后一段中“While a poem a day won’t cure, it might help relieve. (虽然每天一首诗不能治愈疾病,但它可能有助于缓解压力。)”可知,此时作者通过临床的实验以及研究最终明白了诗歌是能够有助于缓解压力的,即更加了解自己的工作。故选D。
27.推理判断题。通读全文,文章讲述的是作者通过实际的工作经验和研究经历明白到诗歌对于治疗疾病的重要作用。同时根据最后一段“I’ve decided that I’ll learn how to meet my patients beyond the chart documents; that Fil encourage them to write their own stories; that I will heal as well as treat. In other words, I’ll honor each and every word in the oath I took last year.(我决定学习如何在病历文件之外与病人见面;菲尔鼓励他们写自己的故事;我既能治疗,也能治愈换句话说,我将信守我去年宣誓的每一个字。)”

根据第一段中的“A new study suggests that smoke from wildfires can change how clouds store water and could lead to less rainfall. The research comes as western parts of the United States are currently experiencing drought conditions after several years of intense wildfire activity.(一项新的研究表明,野火产生的烟雾会改变云层储存水的方式,并可能导致降雨量减少。这项研究发布之际,美国西部地区在经历了几年的强烈野火活动后,目前正在经历干旱。)”可推知,研究人员进行这项研究是因为美国在野火后出现了严重的干旱。故选C。
29.细节理解题。根据第四段中的““Because of their small droplet sizes, these smoky clouds are expected to reflect more light and produce less rain than clouds in clean air,” the study states.(“由于这些烟雾云的液滴很小,预计它们会反射更多的光,比清洁空气中的云产生更少的雨水,”该研究指出)”可知,烟云的特征是它们往往会反射更多的光。故选A。
根据第四段中的“It is that size difference, the researchers say, that could reduce the amount of rainfall. This is because small droplets are less likely to grow and eventually fall to the ground as rain.(研究人员说,正是这种大小差异可能会减少降雨量。这是因为小水滴不太可能长大,最终以雨的形式落在地上)”可知,烟雾会导致降雨量减少。故选A。
根据第一段中的“A new study suggests that smoke from wildfires can change how clouds store water and could lead to less rainfall.(一项新的研究表明,野火产生的烟雾会改变云层储存水的方式,并可能导致降雨量减少)”及下文介绍可知,文章主要介绍了野火烟雾可以使云产生较少的降雨。

根据划线词所在句“Those who continue using iPhones could lose their jobs while those who switch to Huawei would get subsidies.(那些继续使用苹果手机的人可能会失去工作,而那些转而使用华为的人将获得subsidies)”中while可知,前后句是对比关系,“lose their jobs”与“get subsidies”相对,结合选项可知,使用苹果手机的人可能会失去工作,而使用华为的人将获得“奖金”,划线词与bonus同义。故选B。
根据第二段“a senior company executive said the move was to ensure the security of information and commercial secrets, and to encourage all to support domestic brands. Some enterprises and agencies might have security concerns (该公司一位高管表示,此举是为了确保信息和商业秘密的安全,并鼓励所有人支持国产品牌。部分企业和机构可能存在安全顾虑)”可知,领导层要求员工停止使用苹果手机是因为他们认为公司的机密信息可能会被苹果手机窃取。故选A。
根据第四段“However, it isn’t Apple that is stopping supplying chips and other high-tech parts to Huawei. It is US politicians.(然而,停止向华为供应芯片和其他高科技零部件的并不是苹果公司。而是美国政客)”可知,停止向华为供应芯片和其他高科技零部的并不是苹果公司,而是美国政客们的行为,所以B项错误。故选B。
35.主旨大意题。通读全文,结合选项最后两段中“Boycotting US brands such as Apple is not at all advisable. It not only violates (侵犯) an individual’s personal right to choose what he or she likes, it also creates a lot of misunderstanding.(抵制苹果等美国品牌根本不可取。 由此推知C项“Can’t Force Huawei to Be Apple of One’s Eye (不能强迫华为成为掌上明珠)”是本文要表达的观点,即不能通过抵制的手段来迫使人们选择使用华为手机。

上文“But, this is linked with the ability of cold-weather running to reduce the tendency for the body to experience the mass of bone and muscle wasting.(但是这和在冬季跑步可以减少身体经历大量骨骼和肌肉消耗的趋势的能力有关)”说明了冬季跑步可以减少对身体骨骼和肌肉的消耗,A项“因此,是时候尝试这个方法保持年轻了”符合题意,与上文构成因果关系。故选A项。

The traditional Chinese culture item I introduce is dian cha, a kind of tea art popular in the Song Dynasty. The technique begins with pouring hot water over powdered tea to create a paste. Then, more hot water is slowly added as the tea is constantly whisked by hand with a bamboo stick. This action of pouring hot water is called dian, giving this art the name dian cha.
I appreciate it because it is unique in the world. Besides, it makes drinking tea more enjoyable, which also gives us an insight into people’s lifestyle in the Song Dynasty.

67.With a slap on her back, Coach sent Lauren running onto the court. I watched Lauren doing warming-up in the court wide-eyed and my heart beat wildly. My wife took hold of my hand tightly and I knew she felt the same as I. The game restarted and Lauren kept pace with the others fairly well. Then something happened. They passed Lauren the ball. She caught it and dribbled toward the goal. Amazingly, the opposing team did not block her. She shot. She scored! Applause exploded. Lauren gave her teammates five, held her arms high and rushed to us to share her joy.
“Did you see Dad and Mum. I scored! I made a basket!” Hardly could Lauren control her excitement. Her eyes shone as she wiped sweat from her forehead. My wife and I threw our arms around each other, tears of happiness rolling down cheeks. For sixteen years, we had tried hard to prevent her from feeling like she was different. But watching Lauren enjoying herself in the game, I saw that my daughter was really different. She wasn’t like everyone else-not physically, but spiritually.
