Ashley left her homeland because of war and came to the United States. She became a student of mine and I gave her some advice on how to improve her language skills so she can hopefully get a good exam grade next summer. She is about to go to a university in Syria next month and at the moment she is sitting in a class with kids about 5 years younger than her,and in the last three years, she has been learning a completely new language with them.
I still remember the first year she came here. She didn’t do well in the exams. Her class teacher agreed that she should get a higher grade for her O-levels though she still had to learn a lot in her new language. So I told her that she had got a C instead of a D. Hearing this, she had tears in her eyes and was so thankful and surprised. She also shared that I greatly encouraged
her. I told her that I once had two teachers who had given me several chances and that one day it would be her turn to help somebody else. I also told her that she still needed to put in a lot of hard work!
I got a beautiful e-mail from her that evening where she expressed her thanks and said,“Nobody has ever helped me like you.” She added several little flower symbols. It was so full of
pleasure and gratitude. I was not sure what exactly to write back but I printed her e-mail and hung it up.
Teaching is not always a bed of roses, but it is moments like these that really warm the heart.
