A
Everywhere inside Valerie Tolman's home in Missouri City are signs that she has a big heart. There are family photos, including those of two biological and two adopted children who are all now grown. Her two rescue dogs, Ivy and Ellie, are close by and, in an upstairs bedroom, are four kittens she's looking after. Her love of animals and passion for helping strays(走失的宠物) find homes earned her the Missouri City Volunteer of the Year award in 2017.
Tolman, a former newspaper reporter and software-industry analyst, started the volunteer program at the Missouri City Animal Shelter in 2014 after she retired. She later formed the Friends of the Missouri City Animal Shelter, a non-profit organization to expand the group's efforts to keep animals healthy, alive and adoptable. "I like living things, and it breaks my heart to think something is suffering—animals or humans," Tolman said.
She even challenged city officials about the lack of funding(资金) for the shelter, and encouraged the public to complain in letters and emails to the city council. Eventually, the council budgeted $250,000 for the shelter. "I fought city hall and won," she said. "The animals are in such better shape. I'm proud of that."
But she's most proud of her efforts to send high school students from low-income families to college. She and her husband Davis Tolman,a retired petroleum geologist, started a scholarship for first-generation college students in 2001. Tolman said 51 students have received full tuition(学费), including books, through the program. Although the graduation rate of the scholarship receivers is 54 percent, Tolman said all of the students tended to become successful in life simply because they attended college. Most of the students are the first in their families to go to college.
"It has a ripple effect, and even though some may not finish, there is a feeling that anything is possible," she said. "We now have nurses, teachers and engineers because of this program."
1. What makes Tolman do volunteer work
A. Her satisfaction of material rewards. B. Her sense of duty.
C. Her love for creatures. D. Her inspiration from other people.
2. What can we infer about the City Council in Paragraph 3
A. It asked the public to build shelters for strays.
B. It annoyed the public by its inaction.
C. It didn't have enough money to build shelters.
D. It had paid little attention to strays before.
3. What can we learn about the scholarship receivers
A. They all graduated from college with a degree.
B. They tended to manage their life more easily.
C. They helped spread the idea of the program.
D. They supported their families when in college.

Recently I was visiting some websites when I came across a collection of strange beach photos where everyone had a cloth wall surrounding their little patch of sand. I had never seen anything like that before, and I was intrigued, so I started surfing the Internet to look for all sorts of phrases that might throw light on the mystery of Polish beach separators.
I found a site on Poland's affairs that covered this "phenomenon" quite exactly. According to the site, beach separators have been part of Polish beach-going culture for a long time, but have recently been getting a lot of attention online, after foreign tourists started posting photos on social networks.
Beach separators vary in size according to the size of the group. You'll see tiny ones only surrounding the space around a single beach towel, and giant ones separating a large part of the beach. They aren't designed to protect their users away from prying eyes. It's no secret that strong winds are very common on the shores of the Baltic Sea, so they were originally meant to allow beach-goers to enjoy sunbathing without having their belongings blown away or sand blown in their faces.
However, in recent years, people have begun criticizing them. During the summer, beach separators are placed so close to each other that a person can hardly pass between them, let alone find a place to put their own beach towels. This creates a problem for foreign tourists unfamiliar with them, who just want a place to lie down on the sand. And thus they can easily create all kinds of conflicts due to lack of space. For example, some people leave the beach for hours but leave their separators in place to make sure that their space doesn't get occupied by someone else.
Though I have visited a fair number of seaside resorts(度假胜地) across Europe, I hope that I will go to visit it one day .
1.Which of the following can replace the underlined word "intrigued" in Paragraph 1
A.Interested. B.Satisfied. C.Terrified. D.Encouraged.
2.Why do the beach-goers set up beach separators
A.To attract others' attention. B.To take a good sunbath.
C.To keep themselves in private. D.To protect themselves from thieves.
3.What are beach separators blamed for
A.They cause plenty of garbage. B.They fail to function properly.
C.They take up too much space. D.They are out of place.
4.What is the text mainly about
A.A new Polish attraction. B.Big challenges on the beach.
C.An unforgettable journey to Poland. D.Beach separators in Poland.

I love charity shops and so do lots of other people in Britain because you find quite a few of them on every high street. The charity shop is a British institution, selling everything from clothes to electric goods, all at very good prices. You can get things you won't find in the shops anymore. The thing I like best about them is that your money is going to a good cause and not into the pockets of profit-driven companies, and you are not damaging the planet, but finding a new home for unwanted goods.
The first charity shop in the modern form we know today was opened in 1947 by Oxfam. The famous charity's appeal to aid postwar Greece had been so successful that it had been flooded with donations. They decided to set up a shop to sell some of these donations to raise money for that appeal. Now there are over 7,000 charity shops in the UK. My favourite charity shop in my hometown is the Red Cross shop, where I always find children's books, all 10 or 20 pence each.
Most of the people working in the charity shops are volunteers, although there is often a manager who gets paid. Over 90% of the goods in the charity shops are donated by the public. Every morning you see bags of unwanted items outside the front of shops, although they don't encourage this, rather ask people to bring things in when the shop is open.
The shops have very low running costs: all profits go to charity work. Charity shops raise more than 110 million a year, funding(资助) medical research, overseas aid, supporting sick and poor children, homeless and disabled people, and much more. What better place to spend your money You get something special for a very good price and a good moral sense. You provide funds to a good cause and tread lightly on the environment.
1. The author loves the charity shop mainly because ofits _____.
A. convenient location B. great variety of goods
C. spirit of goodwill D. its nice shopping environment
2. The first charity shop in the UK was set up to _____.
A. sell cheap products B. deal with unwanted things
C. raise money for patients D. help a foreign country
3. Which of the following is TRUE about charity shops
A. The operating costs are very low.
B. The staff are usually well paid.
C. 90% of the donations are second-hand.
D. They are open twenty-four hours a day.
4. Which of the following may be the best title for the passage
A. What to Buy at Charity Shops
B. Charity Shop: Its Origin & Development
C. Charity Shop: Where You Buy to Donate
D. The Public's Concern about Charity Shops

Amber has a degree in business management and economics. She put her skills to good use when she spent eleven months in Cambodia through World Hope International as a volunteer working with a local microfinance(小额信贷) company to help the poor get financial services.
Amber's first few weeks in Cambodia were busy and difficult as she tried to learn the language, understand the culture, and get used to her new surroundings. Her volunteer service involved working with a local micro-finance company. In addition to writing plans, preparing international marketing materials, and building donor(捐赠人) relations, Amber met with company clients. During these visits she learned how the small loans they received transformed their lives. She learned first-hand the benefits of micro-finance, which by providing farmers and small-business owners with affordable working capital (such as money to buy a sewing machine) helped them to earn their way out of poverty.
"It never stopped amazing me when a client would show me a new home that was built because of a loan he received or the way a client's business had improved and thus allowed his children to be sent to school," Amber said.
Amber recalled that one client called Paul walked her all around his house, pointing to what he had done with each of the eight loans he'd received. He explained how every loan had improved his family's quality of life. Amber said he was one of the hardest working men she had ever met. He had suffered greatly in the Cambodian Civil War and became disabled, but not once did he let it kill his dreams of realising a better life for his family. His latest purchaser sound system that he rented out for weddings and other parties doubled his income.
Amber said, "Living and working in Cambodia helped me see the world in new ways and made me aware of the hardship and suffering that many people around the world face every day. Those eleven months were some of the most meaningful months of my life."

Who Was the Thief
Sam, an eight-year-old boy was very happy as his school was reopening. He was going to meet his friends after a long summer vacation. Another reason why he couldn't wait to go to school was that he wanted to show his friends the brand-new red pen which his uncle bought him from Singapore.
In the recess when he opened his pencil box to show the pen to his best friend Suresh, he found the pen was missing. He was in tears. He remembered that when he had taken it out to write a sum in the math notebook, Mark who sat besides him, commented, "What a lovely pen! Where did you get it "
Sam sat on his chair and cried in the recess when no one was around him. Along came another friend, Green. Green couldn't bear to see his friend crying! So he went to him. Green knew that Sam had lost his pen.
Green said, "Do you know what, Sam " Sam asked, "What " "I have always wanted to be a detective." Sam who was already upset, said, "So what ! What's the big deal about being a detective Huh!!" still crying. Green said, "Sam, please take it easy. You have lost your pen and I want to be a detective. This will be my first mystery case to solve as a detective!! The mystery of the red pen!" Green exclaimed a little mysteriously. Green suggested that they should go looking for clues about the missing pen.
This cheered up Sam immediately and he agreed. He wiped his tears and brightened up. They went out of the class and Green asked, "Now, who was the first person you showed the pen to " Sam said, "Mark." "Great! Let's go to the field," Green said.
Sam asked, a bit surprised, "Why do we have to go to the field " Green said that they had to go to the field because Mark always played cricket in the field and had his lunch there.
So both of them walked to the field.__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

A
I like living things... animals or humans(我喜欢有生命的东西,一想到动物或人类 正遭受痛苦我就很心痛)可知,Tolman做志愿者工作是因为她对各种生物的爱。故选C项。
She even challenged city officials about the lack of funding(资金)for the shelter, and encouraged the public to complain in letters and emails to the city council.(她甚至因缺少足够的资金修建动物收容所而挑战城市官员,并且鼓励公众以信件和电子邮件的形式向市议会投诉。)
Although the graduation rate of the scholarship...all of the students tended to become successful in life simply because they attended college.
根据第一段中的 "I had never seen anything like that before" 以及 "so I started surfing the Internet to look for all sorts of phrases that might throw light on the mystery of Polish beach separators" 可知,作者因为之前从未见过这种场景,所以很感兴趣,就去网上搜索了一下。
根据第三段中的 "so they were originally meant to allow beach-goers to enjoy sunbathing without having their belongings blown away or sand blown in their faces" 可知,设置沙滩分隔物的初衷是让去海滩的人享受日光浴,而不用担心自己的东西会被吹走或者沙子吹到脸上。
根据倒数第二段中的 "beach separators are placed so close to each other that... all kinds of conflicts due to lack of space" 可知,沙滩分隔物彼此挨太近,人们都很难通过,更别说找到地方放置自己的沙滩浴巾了。
由第一段第四句中的“The thing I like best about them is that your money is going to a good cause(我最喜欢慈善商店的一点是你的钱将会用于公益事业)”可推断出C项为正确答案。
由第二段第二、三句“The famous charity's appeal to aid postwar Greece had been so successful…raise money for that appeal.”
由第四段第一句“The shops have very low running costs…” 由第三段第一句中“volunteers(志愿者)”可知B项不正确。
由最后一段倒数第一、二句中的“a good moral sense(好的道德感)”和“You provide funds to a good cause(你为一项公益事业提供资金)”可知C项为最好的题目。即Charity Shop: Where You Buy to Donate(慈善商店——一个买东西就相当于捐款的地方)。
D
根据第二段中的“how the small loans they received transformed their lives”和第三段内容可知,小额信贷项目让当地很多人受益,改变了他们的生活。
根据第四段中的“every loan had improved his family's quality of life”可知,每笔小额信贷都帮助他改善了他和他家人的生活。
根据最后一段中的“helped me see the world in new ways”可知, Amber在柬埔寨当志愿者的经历改变了她对世界的看法。

第二节
答案:
So both of them walked to the field. Mark was really playing cricket there. Green asked, "Did you take Sam's red pen " "No, you can't blame me for that. I'm not the thief at all. I just saw it when Sam showed it to me. And I didn't know his pen was missing, "Mark said, in a serious voice. "After the class was over, I came here. How can I take his pen "
What Mark said sounded reasonable, so off Sam and Green went. They had to go looking for other clues. Green, the detective, thought for a moment. Then he asked Sam, "Isn't it possible that the red pen fell down under your desk " Sam didn't look for it carefully, so they hurried back to the classroom. There, just under Sam's chair lay his pen. So sometimes we may do wrong to our friends if we don't think carefully.
