Sheng Xiaohan is a sixteen-year-old student at Shanghai Gezhi High School. He is also a hero. On his way home from school one evening, he saw a 60-year-old man lying on the sidewalk. There were several people standing around the man but they were nervous and afraid to touch him. Sheng, however, remembered the CPR lessons he learned at school. He was able to help save the man’s life before the ambulance arrived and sent the man to the hospital.
Sheng is a modest boy. No one knew of his heroic actions until weeks later when the man, who is now fully healthy, came to the school to thank him. Later, Sheng said, “I just did what I needed to do. There is no need to thank me. I think many of my friends would do the same thing if they were there. I hope that people will not remember my name. I hope they will instead remember the image of my generation, who are caring and willing to help.”
“I’m a little worried that some people will treat me as a model and hold too high expectations of me. I’m not perfect, neither are my skills in first aid,” Sheng said. “But I would feel happy if my story can encourage more people to offer a hand to others in need.
