When I was in my fourth year of teaching,I was also(and am still)a high school track and field coach(田径教练). One year,I had a student,John, who entered my class when he was a junior. John changed to our school from Greece, and seemed to be interested in sports,so I encouraged him to join our track team. I explained to him that even though he had never taken part in it before,I did believe that he could do well in any event, and that I would be willing to coach him in whichever ones interested him. He accepted the offer, and began to work hard at every practice.
About a month later,I had found out from other sources that John was a first-class tennis player, winning various junior awards in his home country. I went to him asking,“John,I really appreciate that you came out for the track team, but why didn’t you play tennis instead? It seems that would interest you a lot more, since you’re so good at it.”John answered,“Well,I like tennis, but you told me that you believed in me,and that you thought I could do well in track,so I wanted to try it for that reason.”
From then on,I often remember my student’s reply. I told it to a friend and she suggested I write it down to share somewhere with more teachers. No matter how critical(挑别的)students can be of themselves,I’ve found that a simple“I trust that you can do it!”can go a long way!

Zhaobi can be found outside the entrance of a variety of buildings, not to be confused with yingbi which are similar structures found on the other side of the gate, and in their earliest form during the western Zhou dynasty (c.11th century -771BC), were built to serve the function of a wealth and power symbol. They were allowed for only the highest members of society, noblemen, dukes and princes. Seeing zhaobi outside a building would let passers-by know that this is the residence of someone of extreme importance, while also serving the practical function of protecting privacy by blocking the entrance from any spying eyes.
With the passing of time and social changes, by the Tang (618-907) and later Song (960-1279) dynasties, there was less exclusivity about who could build zhaobi, but more importantly there was also a change in the meaning and purpose of the walls. Instead of representing social position, zhaobi took on a more mysterious purpose, coming to play a role in the form of fengshui, a practice which focused on achieving harmony and balance in all things.
It was believed that as well as functioning as a physical block for one’s privacy, zhaobi would act as a deterrent against gui, or wandering dangerous spirits, which would attempt to harm a home, but being unable to turn corners, zhaobi would prevent such action. As well as offering this spiritual protection, their location would allow for better flow of qi, or important energy, helping to conserve it in the building.
Moving further forward in time, zhaobi became more of a form of artistic expression and creativity, with poetry, paintings and characters representing luck and good fortune appearing on the walls, with families using zhaobi as a platform to tell their family history and achievements.

I love going to the local nursing home to help with her when I was a child. However, once I became a teenager, I was too caught up in my adolescent world to worry about helping others.
One particular summer day when I was 12, Mom came into my room and told me to get up and meet her at the car. But I had planned to spend the day at the lake with friends. Why did she have to ruin everything At last, I made my way outside with my mother. Angry and annoyed, I climbed into the car and shoot the door loudly. I sat in silence, too upset to talk. “Tasha, do you know where we are going ” Mom asked calmly. I remained silent. “Sweetheart, we’re going to the children’s shelter. I have been there before and I think it would benefit you,” she explained.
I feel a pain slowly form in my stomach. How was I supposed to help there
When we reached the shelter, I was rather surprised. As we approached the front door, wind bells played a calming tune while trees and flowers welcomed us. Maybe this wasn’t going to be so.
Mom rang the doorbell. We were led to the front room, where all of the children were playing. Toys were spread out across the floor. I noticed a baby whose body was seriously wounded. 21. 句意:你有没有见过这样的广告:在六周内学会一门外语,否则就把钱退给你 A. so所以;B. or否则;C. and和;D. but但是。根据上文的祈使句“Learn a foreign language in six weeks”和下文的“give your money back”可知,这是广告中的承诺,承诺让你在六周内学会一门外语,否则就把钱退给你。故选B项。
A. can’t不能;B. impossible不可能的;C. never从不;D. often经常。
A. easily容易;B. difficult困难的;C. able能够;D. easy容易的。
A. how much多少;B. how long多长时间;C. how fast多快;D. how many多少。 故选A项。

47.One possible version:
I looked down to see a little girl with brown eyes looking up at me. Her angelic face lighted, although there were some scars on her little arms. “Hi. I’m Ashley. Do you want to play dolls with me ” she asked. I looked over and saw Mom nodding to me with a smile. I bent toward Ashley and whispered, “Sure. I’d love to.” Her tiny hand reached up and took mine, and we walked toward the doll house. Our time together brought her great joy and fun and she also made my day.
I returned to the sheer with Mom several times. During those visits, some of the children including Ashley shared their troubled pasts with me in great detail. I felt sorry for what had happened to them and treasured the friendship between us. I would like to do everything in my power to help the children there. At the same time, I learned to be grateful for all that I had. It was a meaningful time in my young life that I will never forget. It was Mom who taught me the valuable lesson that summer.
