American people like to say “Thank you” when others help them or say something kind to them. People of many countries do so, too. It is a very good habit.
You should say “Thank you” when someone passes you the salt on the table; when someone walking ahead of you keeps the door open for you; when someone says you have done your work well; or you have bought a nice thing; or your city is very beautiful. Americans use “Thank you” not only between friends, but also between parents and children, brothers and sisters.
“Excuse me” is another short sentence they use very often. When you hear someone say so behind you, you know that somebody wants to walk past you without touching you. It’s not polite to break others when they are talking. If you want to speak to one of them, say “Excuse me” first and then begin talking. You should also do so when you begin to cough or make any noise before others.
Let’s learn to say “Thank you” and “Excuse me”
Judge the following sentences true(T) or false(F) according to the passage.

Fights at school sometimes happen. But how can you keep away from a fight Here’s something you can do.
◇Be calm (冷静). Sometimes, you feel so angry that you really want to teach somebody a lesson. But being angry can’t solve problems. Neither can a fight. Instead, it may bring you more problems. In the school, everyone involved (卷入) in a fight will be punished, no matter who started it. There are no winners in a fight.
◇Shout loudly. If you know someone is coming up behind you to attack, turn toward the person with your hands up in front of your body and loudly say “stop” before walking away. Loud voice can usually make the attacker calm down. If the person doesn’t stop, cry for help by calling out the name of a teacher whose office is nearby.
◇ ▲ Your friend may ask you to join in a fight. Learn to say no. Helping him fight is not really helpful to him. If you really want to give him a hand, try to ask him to give it up. Also, you can tell him if he gets involved in a fight, he may get hurt and be punished. Then, try to learn why he wants a fight and help him find a right way to deal with the problem.

Soela Zani is a photographer from Albania. In 1988, a quiet boy lived next door to her. Born with Down's syndrome (唐氏综合征), the boy never spoke and seldom went outside because his parents felt shame to be seen with him.
“It was sad to see that,” Zani said. “Now, people know differently. Children with Down's syndrome are lovely. We need to accept them as they are and give them a chance to succeed in life.”
Zani wanted to do something for those lovely children, so she opened an exhibition (展览) last year at Albania's National Historical Museum. Photos of children with Down's syndrome were shown in the exhibition. In the photos, the children are copying poses (姿势) from famous paintings.
“When we opened the exhibition, the visitors enjoyed all the pictures. Many even started to cry in front of them. I was very touched,” Zani said. “These children are beautiful. They are pieces of art. This is my message.”
In some parts of Albania, having a child with Down's syndrome is still thought to be unlucky or shameful. But Zani has found the beauty of the children, inside and out. “There is no difference between a child with Down's syndrome and a child without it. They are the same,” Zani said. “This exhibition is a present from me to them.” Zani plans to take more photos of children with Down's syndrome and raise money for them this year.

82.(A)Dear Helen,
I know you are worried about your study and the relationship with your parents, your good friend Mary makes friends with other students. You feel stressed and lonely, you even quarrel with your parents. Many students have the same problems as you. I have a few ideas that might help you out.
First, I suggest that you talk with your parents directly and share your feelings with them. I believe your parents will understand you and help you make a study plan. Second, when you feel lonely, try to take part in some school activities and learn to communicate with your classmates. Last but not least, find fun ways to exercise. Playing football with your new friends is a good way to relax yourself. Don't be afraid of losing the game. Practice makes perfect.
Hope these suggestions are really helpful to you.
Yours,
Li Hua
(B) Wang Lin used to be an excellent student. He was good at every
subject he learned. Once after an exam, he got full marks. Being very pleased with his son’s achievement, his father bought him a mobile phone as a prize.Of course Wang Lin was very excited. After he got the phone, he began to play games, and gradually he became interested in games, and in the end, he lost himself in them. He often stayed up late. As a result, he is now bad at his lessons.
If Wang Lin gives up playing games, I'm sure he is certain to be
come an excellent student again.
