Elephant Transit Home In both Africa and Asia elephants are being threatened by changes in their natural habitats. People are moving into the elephants' habitats and endangering their survival. In the country of Sri Lanka, there is one place where elephants are not only protected but also respected. It is called the Elephant Transit Home (ETH).
Set up in 1995, the ETH aims to protect and nurture baby elephants that are found injured or living without their mothers in the wild. Every year about 30 baby elephants in Sri Lanka need help. As many as possible are brought to the ETH. There they are given food, shelter, and medical care. Most importantly, they are given the chance to be with other elephants and become part of a herd (象群).
A day at the ETH begins early in the morning when the baby elephants are given their first feeding of milk. During the day, each baby will drink an average of 13 gallons of milk. Older elephants are fed mostly coconut leaves and other native plants. Then the elephants are allowed to walk around, eating the grass and forming a herd. The cost of caring for the baby elephants is high. The ETH spends about $125,000 each year on powdered milk for the baby elephants.
At the ETH, workers try to reduce human connection with the elephants. They also try to increase bonds (联系) between the elephants. It usually takes three years for a baby elephant to be set free into its natural habitat. The elephants are sent back to the wild together with other orphans with whom they have bonded. This program helps them return to the wild as members of a herd that will communicate with each other and take care of each other.
The ETH is considered one of the best animal protection sites in the world. Not only are the elephants cared for, they are treated with respect. Most importantly, they go back to live in the wild, where they belong.

Diana Ross, American pop singer and actress, achieved international popularity, first as the leader singer of the Supremes and later as solo (独唱的) artist. Diana Ross was born on March 26, 1944, in Detroit, Michigan. She was the second of six children of Fred and Ernestine Ross, who lived in one of Detroit's poor districts. Because her family were closely connected with each other, Ross almost didn't notice the difficult life as she grew up.
Ross' professional career began in 1959, when she joined several neighborhood friends to form the Primettes. The group was renamed the Supremes after signing a recording contract (合同) with Motown late the following year. The group produced many number-one hit singles (热门单曲) on the US Billboard Hot 100, including Baby Love, Stop! In the Name of Love and Someday We’ll Be Together. In 1967, the group was renamed Diana Ross and the Supremes, foreshadowing (预示) Ross' solo career, which she started in 1970.
Beginning with Ain't No Mountain High Enough from her first solo album, Ross enjoyed more than ten years of great success with her hit singles. Ross also developed a film-acting career in the 1970s, beginning with a starring role as blues singer Billie Holiday in Lady Sings the Blues and continuing with Mahogany, for which she also recorded the theme song Do You Know Where You're Going To.
However, in the mid-1980s, Ross saw her career begin to wane. Most of her albums were re-recordings of earlier material. In 2006, she produced I Love You, a collection of love songs by many artists, and she started an energetic concert tour the following year to make the album publicly known. Although you can't find her songs on the US Billboard Hot 100 now, Ross remains popular as one of the leading musical performers of all time.

In 1969, watching the landing of Apollo 11 on the Moon on TV from his parents' farm in Canada, Chris Hadfield was amazed and excited. On that day, at only nine years old, Chris made the most important decision of his life: He was going to be an astronaut.
There wasn't even a training program in Canada to become an astronaut; but Chris was determined. He spent a great deal of time studying and fixing engines. After school he joined the Canadian army where he learned to fly many different types of planes. Chris did a lot of research for the National Aeronautics and Space Admmistration (NASA) in the United States and had special training. Finally, in 1995 he rode his first rocket into space.
Chris became the first Canadian astronaut to walk in spare, and went on a number of space missions throughout his carcer. The most memorable was his five-month stay on the International Space Station (ISS) as commander, between December 2012 and May 2013. He posted on social media thousands of photos of Earth and videos of himself explaining how things work in zero gravity. His followers could watch him sleeping, brushing his teeth, washing his hands, or preparing "space" snacks in zero gravity, which turned him into a social media phenomenon.
Today, Chris travels the world giving talks about his work. He once said, "Decide in your heart of hearts what really excites and challenges you, and start moving your life in that direction. Every decision you make, from what you eat to what you do with your time tonight, turns you into who you are tomorrow. Look at who you want to be, and stan sculpting yourself into that person. You may not get exactly where you thought you'd be, but you will be doing things that suit you in a profession you believe in. Don't let life randomly kick you into the adult you don't want to become."

A. The life on his parents' farm. B. His ability to fly various planes.
C. Apollo 11's landing on the Moon. D. His passion for studying engines.
9.What made Chris popular in the media

B. The pictures and videos he posted online.
C. His inspiring talks about his work around the world.
D. His great contributions to Canada's space industry.

A. Courage is what it takes to overcome difficulties.
B. Opportunities go hand in hand with challenges.
C. From small beginnings coms, treat endings.
D. The key to success lies in the firm aim.
11.Which of the following best describes Chris
A. Strong-willed and hardworking. B. Adventurous and outgoing.

Herman Melvile, the writer of the famous whale story Moby Dick, once wrote that humpback whales were "the most lighthearted of all the whales." Known to be intelligent animals and can be seen working together to hunt schools of small fish, humpbacks are a favorite of whale watchers everywhere. And, if you listen closely, you might even hear one singing.
Marine (海洋) biologist Jim Darling has studied the songs of humpback whales for more than 25 years. While recording whale songs on a boat near Hawaii, he invited author Douglas Chadwick to experience diving with a humpback. In the water, Chadwick heard the whale's songs in a way he never heard them before. "Suddenly, I no longer heard the whale's voice in my ears," he said. "I felt it inside my head and bones." When swimming with the whale, Chadwick could see that the whale was aware of him, but not alarmed by his presence. Up in the boat, Darling recorded the whale's song, which can be long and complex, sometimes lasting for 30 minutes or more. Actually, they are perhaps the longest songs sung by any animal.
Darling says that only male humpbacks sing, but for unknown reasons, it was previously thought that they sang to attract females, but scientists showed this was incorrect when they played recordings of whale songs in the ocean and the female whales did not respond. Another idea is that male humpbacks compete with each other using songs, just as other male animals on land do using their horns or sharp teeth.
Researchers have also found that humpback whale songs are different in different parts of the world, perhaps like whale national songs. They may also be like hit tunes on the radio, changing over time—from one year to the next, or even over a single breeding season when they produce young.
Another member of the research team, photographer Flip Nicklin, recalls a special moment he had while interacting with a humpback. While he was snorkeling(潜水) some distance from the huge animal, it approached him until it was just a few metres away. It then gently carried Nicklin towards its eye with a flipper(鳍肢), as if examine him. Obviously, the urge to understand a different species goes both ways.
12.What is this passage mainly about
A. How to record the humpbacks in the ocean.
B. How humpbacks communicate with people.
C. Humpback songs and what they might mean.
D. the career of a man who is interested in humpbacks.
13.When the scientists played songs in the ocean, ________.
A. the songs attracted fish
B. no female whales came
C. male whales became angry
D. male and female whales came together
14.What is NOT true about humpback whales
A. Their songs are short and simple.
B. Only male humpback whales sing.
C. Humpback whales are very friendly.
D. They are popular with whale watchers.
15.What do Chadwick and Nicklin have in common
A. They were afraid of whales.
B. They swam with the whales.
C. Their jobs are to take photos of the whales.
D. They are marine biologists studying whales.

A friend of mine whose name was John Smith had a bad memory, which made him famous. He was so forgetful that he sometimes forgot what he was talking about in the middle of a sentence. His wife had to constantly remind him about his meetings, his classes—even his meals! Once he forgot he had eaten breakfast twice, at home and at school. His wife liked to remind her neighbors, "If John didn't have his head tied on, he would forget that too!" Since Smith was a professor at a well-known university, his forgetfulness was often an embarrassment to him. It wasn't that he was not clever, as some critical people tended to say, but just very absent-minded.
One hot summer day, Professor Smith decided to take his children to a seaside town about a three-hour train ride away. To make the trip more interesting for his young children, he kept the name of the town a secret. However, by the time they arrived at the station, Smith forgot the name of the town he was planning to visit. Luckily, a friend of his happened to be in the station. He offered to take care of the children while Smith hurried back home to find out where he was going.
The professor's wife was surprised to see him again so soon.
"Oh, my dear, I forgot the name of the town."
"What You forgot the name Maybe one day you will forget my name! Now I'll write the name of that town on a piece of paper, and you put it in your pocket and please, please don't forget where you put it."
Satisfied that she had solved the problem, she sent her husband off again. Ten minutes later she was astonished to see him outside the house for the third time.

第二节
答案:
Paragraph 1:
"What is the matter now " asked his wife. "I just can't remember why I come back and where I am supposed to be going on such a hot summer day," replied the professor. However, the real reason was that he forgot where he had left his children. Sensing something wrong, Mrs. Smith didn't believe his words, because whenever he told a lie, he would blink his eyes usually quickly. "Tell me the truth," ordered his wife. "As you told me, I didn't forget where I put the name of that town, but I forget the station where I left our children!" whispered the professor, his voice trembling. "What a bad memory!" shouted the wife.
Paragraph 2:
Hearing the cry, out rushed their neighbors, trying to find out what had happened. A fight between the couple was about to start when the professor's cell phone began to ring. His friend, whose patience had worn thin, phoned to complain. The professor apologized, got into his car and drove away, leaving behind a bunch of people outside the house. Being afraid that he would make matters worse again, Mrs. Smith decided to follow him, who then called a taxi. By the time she caught up with her husband, the children were already back home safe and sound.2022-2023学年高中英语人教版(2019)必修第三册、选择性必修第一册每周一测

Summer is around the corner, and you may already be dreaming about how you'll spend your break. Chances are, staying in school is not your top pick. But for 13-year-old Simone Jones of Philadelphia — and more than 2 million other students in the U.S. — going to school in the summer is the only choice. That's because Simone goes to a year-round school.
In fact, year-round schools have almost the same number of vacation days as traditional-calendar schools. In a year-round school, summer break is usually shortened to about four weeks; the remaining vacation time gets spread out over the rest of the year. Simone, for example, gets a few weeks off in the fall, winter, and spring.
That extra time off during the school year can be a good thing. “Everyone thinks a year-round school is hard,” says Simone. “But the little breaks take a lot of pressure (压力) off us.”
Reorganizing the year can prevent summer learning loss — that is, forgetting what you've learned from the prior(之前的) school year. However, there is a downside. In fact, some schools have tried year-round schedules (时间表) only to turn back when it was difficult to carry out. Try setting up a soccer game with another school when you're on a break every few weeks. Planning family trips can be difficult too, especially if siblings (兄弟姐妹) are on different school schedules.
What does summer vacation mean in our culture It's an American tradition, a time to create lasting memories. But is tradition a good enough reason to keep it around Summer break began 120 years ago, when it was very hot in the summer, so schools started closing. Today, we have air conditioning. And most parents work. For many kids, summer days are spent mostly indoors, playing video games and watching TV. Clearly the world has changed. Is it time for summer break to change, too

A. problem B. choice C. danger D. duty
4.In the author's opinion, summer vacation _____.
A. was started in the early 19th century
B. doesn't have to be that long any more

It may seem as if Mother's Day was invented by a company named Hallmark, but people have been taking time on the calendar to give a shout-out to Mom for a long time. The Greeks and Romans had mother goddess festivals — although their celebrations didn't involve the menfolk taking their underappreciated mothers out to dinner. A more recent tradition was Mothering Sunday, which developed in the British Isles during the 16th century. On the fourth Sunday in April, young men and women who were living and working apart from their families were advised to return to their mothers' houses.
Mother's Day as it is observed in the United States started in the 1850s with Ann Jarvis, a West Virginia woman who held "Mothers' Work Days" to promote health and hygiene(卫生) at home and in the workplace. During the Civil War, Jarvis organized women to improve sanitary conditions for soldiers on both sides, and after the war she became a peacemaker, furthering the cause by bringing together mothers of Union and Confederate soldiers and promoting a Mother's Day holiday.
Jarvis's work inspired another 19th-century woman, Julia Ward Howe. In 1870 Howe published her "Mother's Day Proclamation", which envisioned the day not as appreciation of mothers by their children but as an opportunity for women to exercise their collective power for peace. Howe started holding annual Mother's Day celebrations in Boston, her hometown, but after about a decade she stopped footing the bill and the tradition faded away.
It was Jarvis's daughter Anna who succeeded in getting Mother's Day recognized as a national holiday. After her mother died, in May 1905, Anna started holding yearly ceremony on the anniversary and conducting a tireless PR campaign to have the day made a holiday. In 1908 she succeeded in enlisting the support of John Wanamaker, the Philadelphia department store magnate and advertising pioneer, and by 1912 West Virginia and a few other states had adopted Mother's Day. Two years later, President Woodrow Wilson signed a resolution declaring the second Sunday in May a national holiday.
It wasn't long, though, before whatever ideals the day was supposed to celebrate were buried under an amount of greeting cards and candy. By the 1920s Anna Jarvis was campaigning against the holiday she had been instrumental in creating. "I wanted it to be a day of emotionalism, not profit," she said.

Over 40 years ago, a country music DJ convention (大会) was held every year in Nashville, Tennessee. Many country performers used to attend (参加) the convention to give their performances. Fans would go to Nashville hoping to see their favorite performers. In the end, so many fans began showing up in Nashville that a festival named Fan Fair was born.
The first Fan Fair was held in April 1972, in Nashville for four days. Some of country music's biggest stars attended. There were about fifty thousand fans. The first Fan Fair was so successful that planning began almost immediately for 1973. The date was changed to June, when the weather would be better. Over one hundred thousand fans attended the second Fan Fair.
Every year brought so many performers and fans to Fan Fair that, in 1982, it was moved to the Tennessee State Fairgrounds. Fan Fair stayed at the fairgrounds for another nineteen years.
There was always the unexpected during the festival. In 1974, former Beatle Paul McCartney attended. In 1992, more than six hundred reporters from Europe, Asia, and South America went to cover the appearance of a popular star, Billy Ray Cyrus, who had introduced a new country line dance. In 1996, Garth Brooks, who made a surprise appearance, signed autographs (签名) for 23 hours.
In 2001, Fan Fair returned to downtown Nashville as the world's biggest country music festival. Now, over one hundred and twenty-five thousand country music fans go to Nashville every June. Dottie's Thanksgiving Dinner
Dottie, a puppy, knew today was special. It was Thanksgiving and everyone was getting ready for a big dinner. The doorbell kept ringing as cousins, grandparents, uncles and aunts all came to visit.
Amazing smells were coming from the kitchen. Dottie was not allowed to be in the kitchen today. Mom said that she would get in the way. Dad said she would lick (舔) everything she could reach. They were both right.
The children had been asked to keep the dog out of the way. They did, at first. However, once their cousins arrived, they forgot about Dottie and started playing with each other. The dog got closer and closer to the kitchen. Everything smelled so good! On the edge of the table was a plate filled with slices of ham (火腿) . Before she had a chance to eat it, Dad saw her.
“No! Leave that alone, Dottie! No food for you,” he said. Then he let the dog out into the yard where some family members were playing football. Dottie smiled. This was good! She liked running. She grabbed (抓住) the football from a small boy and wouldn’t give it back. He started to cry, and Dottie got in trouble.
“That's enough, Dottie,” said Uncle Bill, taking the ball away from her. “Maybe you should go back in.” He opened the door again, and the sad puppy went inside.
The puppy went into the dining room and no one was there. Dottie went under the table. The tablecloth was so long that it hung down to the ground. This was a good place for a sleep, she thought.
In the kitchen, everything was ready. Mom and Dad began carrying big bowls and plates of delicious food into the dining room. “Before we get started, we should take a family picture,” suggested Mom. Dad agreed. They went to tell everyone to go outside for a Thanksgiving photo together.
Dottie's nose woke up before she did. She came out from under the table. She looked around. The house was empty. She remembered what Dad had said. “No food for you.” He was wrong.

4.答案:B
C
1.答案:A
根据第一段"but people have been taking time on the calendar to give a shout-out to Mom for a long time. The Greeks and Romans had mother goddess festivals — although their celebrations didn't involve the menfolk taking their underappreciated mothers out to dinner." 故选A。
Mother's Day as it is observed in the United States started in the 1850s with Ann Jarvis, a West Virginia woman who held "Mothers' Work Days" to promote health and hygiene(卫生) at home and in the workplace. Two years later, President Woodrow Wilson signed a resolution declaring the second Sunday in May a national holiday",在19世纪50年代美国的母亲工作日,并倡导推动母亲节。
Ann Jarvis, ... held 'Mothers' Work Days' to promote health and hygiene(卫生) at home and in the workplace"举办"母亲工作日"活动,以促进家庭和工作场所的健康和卫生 。"In 1870 Howe published her 'Mother's Day Proclamation', which envisioned the day not as appreciation of mothers by their children but as an opportunity for women to exercise their collective power for peace." It wasn't long, though, before whatever ideals the day was supposed to celebrate were buried under an amount of greeting cards and candy. By the 1920s Anna Jarvis was campaigning against the holiday she had been instrumental in creating. 'I wanted it to be a day of emotionalism, not profit,' she said".
It may seem as if Mother's Day was invented..."

4.答案:A
As you can imagine, those who want to attend Fan Fair must plan ahead.(可以想象,想要参加招聘会的人必须提前计划)和Of course, there's much more to prepare.(当然,还有很多要准备的)可知,作者接下来可能会为想参加Fan Fair的粉丝们提供一些建议。故选A。

故填which。
故填has been celebrated。

句中的"that we celebrate Moon Day with children." 故填It。
故填what。

She continued to took a bite of the others one by one. “This is the best day in my life. I have never been so happy!” Dottie thought.
“Oh my goodness!” said Mom. She immediately rushed out to call other family members to have a look. Everyone was shocked at the mess on the table. Almost each dish had been spoiled and some was splattered all over the table. At the same time, Dottie stopped and became well-behaved when she saw people’s helpless look, realizing she might have brought disaster. Mom couldn’t accept it and ran upstairs, sobbing. Just then, Dad said soothingly, “Luckily, we still have food delivery service. Let’s try a special Thanksgiving dinner.”

Joe Clark was a non-traditional high school principal, whose unusual way of carrying out rules became the subject of a 1989 Hollywood movie. He gained national attention for his leadership at Eastside High School in Paterson, New Jersey.
"You are not inferior." is what Clark would often tell his students, many of whom were African American or Latino. They grew up in a difficult environment and faced violence, drugs and troubled family life which could prevent them from succeeding in school and in life.
Before becoming an educator, Clark served in the U. S. Amy Reserve. His experience might have influenced how he ran his school. He was known to walk around with a bull horn and a baseball bat. In Clark's first days of working, he expelled 300 students for breaking school rules. The students who remained at school believed that higher expectations were being placed on them. They felt more pressure to perform better.
Some praised his efforts at discipline while others criticized his methods. President Ronald Reagan offered Clark a White House policy adviser position after his success at the high school. In 1988, one teacher, said his methods were more like being in a labor camp than a public high school. In 1989, actor Morgan Freeman played Clark in the movie "Lean on Me." That movie was based on Clark's experiences at Eastside. "Joe was a father figure to school kid," Freeman said. "He was the best of the best in terms of education." Recently, one of Joe Clark's former students, Thomas Mc Entyre said, "I never really got a chance to… thank him. We are your product. You did not fail us. No matter whether you kicked me out, you did not fail me. You bettered me. "
After he retired from Eastside in 1989, Clark wrote a book called "Laying Down the Law: Joe Clark's Strategy for Saving Our Schools." He described how he managed to turn Eastside High from a failing school into a success.

Too many people want others to be their friends, but they don't give friendship back. That is why some friendships don't last very long. To have a friend, you must learn to treat your friend the way you want your friend to treat you. Learning to be a good friend means learning three rules: be honest; be generous (宽宏大量的); be understanding.
Honesty is where a good friendship starts. Friends must be able to trust one another. If you don't tell the truth, people usually find out. If a friend finds out that you haven't been honest, you may lose your friend's trust. Good friends always count on one another to speak and act honestly. Generosity means sharing and sharing makes a friendship grow. You don't have to give your lunch money or your clothes, or enjoy, like our hobbies and your interests. Naturally you will want to share your ideas and feelings. These can be very valuable to a friend. They tell your friend what is important to you. By sharing them you help your friend know you better.
Sooner or later everyone needs understanding and help with a problem. Something may go wrong at school. Talking about the problem can make it easier to solve. Turning to a friend can be a first step in solving the problem. So to be a friend you must listen and understand. You must try to put yourself in your friend's place so you can understand the problem better.
No two friendships are ever exactly alike(相同). But all true friendships have three things in common. If you plan to keep your friendships, you must practice honesty. Generosity and understanding.

The bell rang, announcing the end of the vivid art class Karson loved most. He was delighted that he had created a very satisfying work. So he walked to the back of the classroom to put his work away carefully. There, lying on the floor in front of the classroom bookcase, was a golden ticket! Karson picked it up. His heart beat faster when he saw that the name line was blank. He couldn't believe his luck!
The boys and girls in Karson's class could earn golden tickets by doing well in their study or by being extra helpful or kind. Once a week their teacher drew a ticket out of the box on her desk and let the winner choose a prize.
Today was the golden ticket drawing, and here was another ticket, just for him! Karson looked around. No one else was near the ticket. All his classmates were at their desks, laughing and talking with each other. Miss Evans was engaged in grading the papers collected earlier in the morning.
Karson decided to write his name on the blank line. Then he could put it into the prize box with the six tickets he'd already earned. With so many chances, one of his tickets would most probably be picked! Then he could choose the pink toy pig for his sister's birthday, just like he had been hoping.
He smiled and reached for the pencil in his pocket. Suddenly his fingers stopped. There was a strange feeling in his chest, and it wasn't his heartbeat. It was "Finders, keepers", right He wondered. He looked out of the window and tried to figure it out. On the one hand, he did find the ticket, but he hadn't earned it. Somebody must have lost it. While established by Woodrow Wilson as a holiday in the United States in 1911, the practice of recognizing mothers on a specific day or time of year has spread to more than 40 countries. Here's a look at the various traditions.
France
Mother's Day in France only started in the 1950s. After World War I, it was celebrated on the last Sunday in May, unless it conflicted with the Pentecost(五旬节). If it did, mothers were celebrated on the first Sunday of June. Regardless of the day, a traditional gif is a flower-shaped cake.
Japan
Following WWI, Mother's Day in Japan gained some popularity, and it is now celebrated on the second Sunday of May. Gifts include red or pink conations(康乃馨) as they symbolize sweetness and purity. Children will often draw pictures of their mothers and present them to mom in addition to preparing dishes that their mothers have taught them.
Sweden
Celebrated on the last Sunday in May, the day isn't all that different from the U. S. version. There's breakfast in bed and homemade cards and the like. One difference is that the Swedish Red Cross collects money by selling red plastic flowers. The money from the flowers goes to mothers and children in need.
Thailand
While all mothers are recognized during Mother's Day in Thailand, the holiday is largely centered on Sirikit, the queen mother of Thailand. Mother's Day is celebrated on her birthday, August 12, and public places and households are decorated with lights and pictures of Sirikit. Flowers like jasmine are popular gifts.

How's your vacation I'm visiting my uncle in Spain. He lives in the sunny and beautiful city of Valencia, in Spain.
Yesterday, I had great fun. My uncle took me to the tomato festival in Bunol, which is just 30 miles away from where my uncle lives. You have probably never heard of this festival before. Neither have I. The tomato festival is called "La Tomatina" in Spanish. It is the biggest and messiest tomato fight in the world. When we first got to the square where the festival took place, it was very crowded with people from all around the world, and many trucks were carrying tomatoes. My uncle told me the crowded people here were around 38,000 and this was more than four times the population of Bunol.
The tomato fight started as soon as the first banger was beaten. Then everyone including me started throwing tomatoes at each other. I took red tomatoes and threw them at anyone that ran, moved, bent down, or turned around. Tomatoes must be squashed(捏扁) before people threw them in order not to hurt anybody.
After a little while, the streets, people and nearby buildings were splashed(溅起) with red. In spite of no winner in this fight, we all had joy. As soon as a second banger was beaten, people stopped throwing.
I really had a great time. I wish you had been here, too. I hope to hear from you soon. Take care.

The New Year is a time for celebrations for almost everyone around the world. In Britain, people go to pubs and nightclubs to dance the old year away, and to welcome in the new one at midnight. Everyone wants to kiss someone special (boyfriend, girlfriend or even a complete stranger!) as the bells ring out at midnight.
In recent years, street parties have become more popular. Hundreds or even thousands of people gather in squares, main streets or on the river banks to listen to bands playing and to see fabulous fireworks displays.
For people who stay at home, most watch specials live New Year shows on TV and countdown along with the presenters, from 10 to 1 as the last seconds of the old year tick away and the bells of the New Year are rung.
In Scotland, on New Year's Eve, people visit their neighbours and drinks dance and generally have a good time. If you're invited to a Scottish home, it's important to know what to bring with you: a lump of coal, some shortbread and some whisky.
The coal shows warmth so you're wishing that the people you visit will have enough heat in the coming year. The shortbread represents food, so you're hoping that the people will have enough to eat in the New Year. Some Scots call whisky "the water of life", so when you hand over your bottle to your hosts, it means you want them to have enough to drink over the next 12 months.
There's one more key task you still have to perform if you can. The first person to knock on a neighbor's door is supposed to be a tall, dark, handsome man. If you are, you'll bring good luck to the household. But what if that's not you Well, don't ring the hell just yet. Wait a while and the right person will turn up soon!

Beijing— The public has responded with vigorous support for an NPC deputy's proposal to extend the Spring Festival holiday from three days to 10.
More than 78 percent of about 27, 600 respondents to a poll on www. . cn voted in favor of the idea of Li Jing, who is also the mayor of Meishan city in South-west China's Sichuan province. Li said the lunar new year festival holiday was too short for family reunions, especially for the nation's 220 million migrant workers.
With hundreds of millions of people on the move during such a short time span, the holiday puts great stress on the public transport system and suppresses tourism, she added. She suggested the holiday be extended and cover the three adjacent(毗连的) weekends, which means the public could take a total of 16 days off and floating population could spend the Lantern Festival, which falls on the 15th day of the lunar new year, with their families.
People would then have sufficient time to fully enjoy the traditional holiday with their families, Li said during an interview with People's Daily Online on Friday.
Most online voters agreed that extending the holiday will ease the burden on public transport and strengthen family ties. "The Spring Festival is an occasion for family reunions and should be longer than the National Day holiday one responder said in an online post. “Every year, I wish I could spend more time at home for the Spring Festival, but I always have to go back to work. I hope the NPC will approve this proposal."
Another online comment read: "Extending the Spring Festival holiday could prevent the annual transportation crush, which has in recent years resembled an exodus(出走) of fleeing refugees(难民)".
Most of the about 13 percent who opposed the idea cited difficulties readjusting to work after the break. Some pointed out that office moral (士气) was generally low during the first week after the holiday. “After the six-day holiday, many people come back to work feeling absent-minded,” one respondent said. Some who opposed the extension suggested adding the Lantern Festival as an official holiday.
Another 10 percent said lawmakers should carefully study the impacts before they make any decisions on holidays.
1.Which of the following is NOT the reason why Li Jing suggested extending the Spring Festival holiday
A.The floating population could spend the Lantern Festival.

C.The lunar new year festival holiday was too short for family reunions.
D.The holiday puts great stress on the public transport system and suppresses tourism.
2.What was Li Jing's plan for the lunar new year festival holiday
A.It could cover the two adjacent weekends.

I went up to the roof for a break after studying for an hour and watched the 50 or so people swimming in the natural rock pool below our house. It was a sunny day—a blue, cloudless sky over a calm sea. But then, as I looked in the distance, I discovered a series of three or four big waves heading towards the shore. I'd seen these mini-tsunamis(海啸) many times before. They were heading at speed in the direction of the pool. Most people knew to look out for them, but from the screams that started coming from the beach, I could tell someone was in trouble.
Without thinking, I ran down into the street, holding my bodyboard(俯伏冲浪板) on the way and shouted at a stranger to go inside my house and call the coastguard. My neighbour Moises had heard the screaming as well and was also outside with his bodyboard, so together we rushed to the steps that led down to the sea.
Once we got closer, we discovered the waves had pulled a boy and a girl from the pool and into the open sea. I knew that the nearest boat would take at least 30 minutes to reach us. Waiting for help wasn't a choice. I wasn't used to this sort of emergency —I'd never been trained as a lifeguar一but I didn't think twice about trying to save them. I suppose in a way I wanted to impress everyone; at 19 a deal like that can seem like a good opportunity to show off.
Moises and I dived into the water and it took us 10 minutes to get to them. When we finally reached them. they were almost lifeless with only their heads coming in and out of the water. We could tell they were still alive from their small breaths but it was clear that they wouldn't have been able to stay there much longer. I held the boy and pulled him over my board. Moises moved the girl onto his board. We discussed pushing them back to the shore, but we were too far out.

第二节
答案:called ; begins ;which/that; tales ;a ;especially ;themselves ;ate;of ;to frighten
故填which/that。
故填a。
故填of。
故填to frighten。
Dear friends,
In a gesture to observe the World Book Day, which falls on the April 23rd, our school hereby launched various activities.
A variety of books were on show on the playground in order of letters, which is convenient for us to look through. Some students who had been reading many books shared their wonderful experience about reading classic books at the class meetings. In addition, in the lecture hall an inspiring speech on reading original books was given by a professor from a local university.
As for me, not only did I benefit a lot from these activities, but I got to know the importance of reading. Good books are treasures of good words, golden thoughts, which, remembered and cherished, become our constant companions and comforters.
Thank you for listening.

第二节
答案:
Paragraph 1:
We had to wait, trying to keep them on the boards, feeling their faces to wake them up, telling them to be strong. 30 minutes later, I began to feel a bit tired. Finally, in the distance, we discovered a small boat with three lifeguards heading towards us. When the boat arrived, we helped push the boy and the girl on board, only to be told that there was no room for us. People who had watched what happened came to meet us and check if we were OK, but there was no round of applause. Everything was back to normal.
Paragraph 2:
That night, word came from the hospital that the two people were in a good condition. They probably would have died if they'd been in the sea for any longer. I knew it was a big deal that we'd saved them, but at the same time it didn't seem like that much effort. I'm sure that anyone who could swim would do the same thing.
