Austin, Texas-based art collector Laura Young purchased a marble bust ( 半 身 像 ) at a local
Goodwill store for $35 in 2018. It turned out that she had stumbled upon a centuries-old Roman sculpture that once belonged to the collection of King Ludwig Ι of Bavaria.
Laura Young was always an enthusiastic art collector. One day in 2018,she tried her luck at a local Goodwill store, hoping to get something special. When she first saw the bust, it lay beneath a table with much dust on top of it. It looked so old and worn among other artworks that it seemed that nobody had paid attention to it. Young wondered whether it was something special and started her multi-year journey of determining its authenticity and origin.
Young met with experts in the University of Texas-Austin art history department, as well as several auction houses ( 拍卖行), one of which was Sotheby’s. The work was initially identified by Sotheby’s consultant Jorg Deterling. After Deterling made the identification, he supported the process of connecting Young with the German authorities. As part of the agreement to return the sculpture to its legitimate (合法的) home in Germany, the Bavarian agency agreed that the work could go on view at the San Antonio Museum of Art (SAMA) to engage the public in its history and story.
“My husband and I were on a road trip when I got an email confirming the bust was indeed an ancient Roman bust. Soon after that, Sotheby’s got in touch with me,”Young said.“There were a few months of intense excitement after that. Though I couldn’t keep it myself, I’m happy to send it to its rightful place. I’m glad that I got to be a small part of its long and complicated history.”
So how did the Roman bust arrive in Texas In January 1944, during World War II, Allied bombers targeted Aschaffenburg (a city in Germany)and seriously damaged the Pompejanum (波姆佩雅努姆宫), where the bust had been kept. Authorities began a restoration of the Pompejanum in1960 and it opened as a museum in 1994. The bust, however, disappeared after the war. After the end of World War II, the US Army established various military installations in Aschaffenburg, and legend has it that a returning soldier brought the sculpture to Texas.
What does the underlined part “stumbled upon” in Paragraph 1 mean most probably
A. Broken up. B. Got away from. C. Come across. D. Missed out on.
What did the bust look like the first time Laura Young saw it
A. Eye-catching. B. Unattractive. C. Mysterious. D. Shiny.
How did Laura Young deal with the Roman bust at last
She had it returned to its rightful home.
She exhibited it at different museums.
She donated it to the SAMA.
She sold it to a famous auction house.
What’s implied about the bust in the last paragraph
It caused a bomb attack on the Pompejanum .
How it got to Texas remains a mystery.
How to restore it to its former state needs deep thought.
It got damaged by a returning soldier from Texas.

Lions and cheetahs (猎豹) previously frequented the Great Karoo, a vast expanse in South Africa. Then came the farms, the fences, and the guns. Lions were gone by the 1840s, followed by cheetahs by the 1870s.
Much of what is now Samara Private Game Reserve, in the Eastern Cape, became home to cattle. That was until 1997, when nature was once again allowed to take its course over thousands of acres( 英亩 ) of land. Now, after 25 years of carefully managed rewilding, both cheetahs and lions have returned to this part of South Africa.
The successful reintroduction of these big cats is down to the vision of Mark and Sarah Tompkins. The couple purchased 11 farms totaling 67,000 acres over five years for the purpose of returning the land to its former state.
To dream big, the family had to start small. Fences were removed along with the cattle, and rewilding effort began literally at grassroots level. “Despite being a dry region, there’s a remarkable amount of biodiversity, particularly native plants,” says Sarah, adding that five of South Africa’s nine types of plant habitat exist within Samara.
Over time, the region’s plants resurfaced. Forest and grassland, rivers and streams, mountains and valleys in the reserve provide habitats for plant-eating animals like antelopes and elephants. “Little by little, we’ve introduced the pieces of the puzzle ( 迷 ) of what this ecosystem would have looked like,” says Sarah.
In 2003, cheetahs were brought back to the area for the first time in 130 years. Then the climate was right to bring back lions, a significant milestone for both Samara and the Great Karoo region.
Samara Private Game Reserve funds its rewilding efforts through its tourism operations. Visitors can stay at the reserve in lodges (小屋) or even sleep beneath the stars, and take part in luxury trips and cheetah tracking, with all earnings reinvested into its various programs.
What caused the disappearance of lions and cheetahs
A. Human activities. B. Environmental disaster.
C. Natural enemies. D. Water shortage.
What happened in 1997 in what is now Samara Private Game Reserve
More cattle were brought to Samara .
The government offered free courses there.
The land began to return to its original state.
Cheetahs and lions returned to the reserve.
What was a key step forward for Samara
A. The comeback of plants. B. The return of lions.
C. The sudden appearance of elephants. D. The early arrival of cheetahs.
What is the last paragraph mainly about concerning the Tompkins
What they look forward to doing.
What they think of the tourism.
How they keep their programs going.
How they do their traveling.

When I was a kid, there was something I wasn’t allowed to say: “I’m bored.” It was forbidden because, as my parents explained, it meant that I wasn’t doing anything about something, which was clearly my own problem.
Now, as a parent myself, I am grateful for the lack of responsibility that my parents took for my entertainment. They weren’t hands-off in other ways, taking a very active approach to my schooling
and music practice, but when it came to unscheduled time— and there was plenty of it in our rural, TV-free home—they were completely unconcerned with what I did.
There were many hours of nothing. I’d lie on my bed, reading books and writing in my journal. In a way, that was the start of my writing career. I filled dozens of notebooks with detailed observations about the world and all the passions, dreams, of a young girl.
While boredom seemed unpleasant at the time, I now look back on it as a blessing. This is exactly what New York Times editor Pamela Paul believes more parents should be giving their kids. In her article, Paul argues that boredom allows space for creativity. “It’s not really the boredom itself that’s important; it’s what we do with it. When you reach your breaking point, boredom teaches you to respond constructively, to make something happen for yourself.”
And that is one of the most valuable things a kid can learn before reaching adulthood, because—
let’s face it — the real world is full of boring tasks. There’s no point in setting kids up for failure by making them think everything’s a fun game. In Paul’s words, “Surely teaching children to endure boredom will prepare them for a more realistic future. One day, even in a job they otherwise love, our kids may have to spend an entire day answering Friday’s leftover emails.”
In order to do this, however, parents need to back off. They need to become more comfortable with letting kids discover their own fun. It’s all for the greater good—raising resilient (适应力强的), creative, self-sufficient children who are prepared for the world when the time comes for them to leave the nest.
How did the author’s parents respond to her leisure activities
They paid no attention to them.
They kept them under strict control.
They actively participated in all of them.
They gave her some options to choose from.
What can we learn about the young author
She enjoyed watching TV.
She fell in love with writing.
She had many unrealistic dreams.
She’d decided on her future career.
What message does Paul intend to convey in paragraph 5
Life isn’t all fun.
Answering emails is tiring.
Work and interests don’t mix.
Doing a job one loves is a blessing.
What is the best title for the text
Kids, get prepared for a world with imperfections
Parents, spend quality time with your kids
Kids, tire yourselves with some work
Parents, let your kids be bored

How to Choose a College Major and Develop a Career Plan
Going to college can seem daunting (使人畏惧的), and no small part of that is the prospect of having to choose a major, which will set the course for the rest of your career life. Here are some steps that might help make your decision easier:
Step 1: Consider your interests and passions.
Do you want a career where you’ll be able to express yourself, or work with numbers 36 The average person will spend nearly 100,000 hours working in their profession before retirement. Make sure that time will be spent doing something you enjoy!
Step 2: Consider how long you want to be in school.
If you’re pursuing a career in professional fields like medicine or law, you may require more than a four-year degree to get the job that you want. 37 Will you want to jump right into a job after you graduate, or do you really want to dive into higher education These are important when deciding what major is the best fit for you.
Step 3: Research prospective careers.
If you think you have a career in mind, do some investigating in person or online. Try connecting with people in the field and ask them what challenges they faced in getting their degrees and finding jobs afterwards. 38 Their journeys to success might surprise you!
Step 4: 39
Remember, you don’t have to make this decision right away. Taking basic-level courses when you first get to college helps decide your level of interest in pursuing a degree program. Plus, if you want to be an interdisciplinary (跨学科的) studies major, some college offers special degree programs, which give you the freedom and flexibility to take a wide variety of classes. 40
Give yourself enough time to decide.
Think about what you like to do in high school.
What if your major conflicts with your parents’ expectations
If you can’t connect in person, try to find role models online and read about their histories.
Thus, you can discover where your interests lie and have classes related to your dream career.
Are you passionate about justice, or do you want to have a career focused on helping people
On the other hand, there are some careers where a master’s degree won’t necessarily be helpful.

A month ago, Katie’s family moved to the countryside. There’s a river next to their new house. One morning, Katie wanted to have some fun by the river. At five, she knew how to be careful while walking along the river. Her mom, Lucinda, sat in the yard, keeping an eye on Katie, while trying to give her independence.
Suddenly, Katie started running toward her and Lucinda rose from her seat. “Mom! Mom!” Katie shouted, and her mother noticed something strange in her hands. “What’s wrong, Katie What’s that ” Lucinda asked.
“Mom! I found this by the riverside!” Katie replied, raising what appeared to be a paper boat. Lucinda took it from her hand and checked it. To her shock, two words “Help Us” which looked childish were clear as day on the paper, but she had no idea whether this was a joke or an actual call for help. Yet her conscience ( 良 心 ) wouldn’t allow her to forget about the message. She had been in situations where there had been no way to ask for help. If someone needed help, she was going to do something.
This boat was actually sent by a 5-year-old boy called Walter, who lives with his old grandma on a big farm which supports their life. At present, it’s time to harvest tons of ripe tomatoes. At her age, Walter’s grandma found it hard to pick them alone. But she had no choice. The other day, she whispered to herself while collecting tomatoes, “If only someone could help me.” Then, she sighed. Walter happened to hear it. Then, he secretly went to the river nearby and wrote a message on a paper boat to ask for help. Then, he dropped the boat on the river.
Lucinda’s home is about one kilometer away from the river. At that time, she had no idea who sent the boat. So she decided to walk along the river, trying to find out who had sent the message, together with Katie. Then, they set off, carrying the boat.

W:I'm great, thanks. Nice to meet you, sir.I'm already very interested in the hotel and can't wait to learn more about the company.
M: Thanks, Julia. And it's a pleasure to meet you, as well. Before getting into the job requirements, can you tell me a bit about your working experience
W: Sure.I've been working in hotels since I graduated. I started as the front desk, but was
promoted to become an assistant manager after three years. And I held that assistant manager position for another two years until now.
M: That's quite good!
W:It's primarily because of my previous boss. She influenced me a lot.
M: I'm glad to hear that. What has been the hardest part of being a manager in your experience
W:Oh, many aspects of management are challenging. But I'd say, luckily,I'm naturally calm and can easily maintain professional behavior. Also, although communicating with co-workers is fairly simple, I find it very difficult to ensure customers' satisfaction.
