Sarah often helped out at her dad’s restaurant, but today was different—she would help serve customers for the first time. Excited but nervous, she carefully carried food to Table 6. However, her excitement quickly turned to worry when she saw Kassy, a popular girl from school, sitting there with her friends. Sarah felt shy and afraid, so she hid behind the front desk to avoid being seen.
Though an excellent student, Sarah often felt uncomfortable among her rich classmates. She remembered how Kassy used to make fun of her and worried that others might do the same to her for working at a restaurant. When her dad found her hiding, Sarah didn’t know what to say. He suggested that she take a break.
Turning back to the kitchen, Sarah felt bad for letting her dad down. To her surprise, Hannah, one of Kassy’s friends, came over and said that she knew how mean (刻薄的) Kassy sometimes could be. She also praised Sarah for her hard work. Her comfort (安慰) gave Sarah the power she needed.
With confidence, Sarah brought the bill to Kassy’s table. When Kassy tried to make fun of her, Sarah and Hannah did a silly “crab dance” and laughed together. As she left, Sarah realized it didn’t matter whether Kassy liked her family’s restaurant or not.

Qinqiang Opera, which began from old folk songs and dances in Shaanxi and Gansu provinces, is one of China’s oldest operas. People call it the “oldest form” of Chinese opera because of its strong music and emotional (情感的) stories. Historical records show it started during the Qin Dynasty (221 BC—207 BC), when farmers and soldiers used it for fun and comfort. The opera shows the daily lives, hard work, and emotions of ancient Chinese people. Its songs and dances also teach about local language, culture and history.
However, in the 1990s, pop and Western music became very popular, and fewer people cared about Qinqiang Opera. Young people especially liked the new music more. Many actors had to leave the stage during this time. Some opera groups closed, and old performance skills were almost forgotten. To make money, artists did other jobs like selling clothes, starting small businesses or acting in movies. But a few never gave up—they kept practicing secretly to save the art.
In 2006, things changed when the government named Qinqiang Opera an “important cultural treasure”. This helped people pay attention to it again. Schools started teaching about it, and theaters mixed traditional opera with modern styles to attract (吸引) young people. Ten years ago, most audiences (观众) were old, but now many young people watch and love Qinqiang Opera. More young actors are joining too, and schools train them to keep the art alive.
The return of Qinqiang Opera not only brings young people back to traditional culture, but also shows China’s efforts to protect its history. It proves that old arts can stay meaningful even in today’s fast-changing world.

The Father of China’s Nuclear Submarines (核潜艇)—Huang Xuhua
Huang Xuhua, a great Chinese scientist, passed away on February 6th, 2025. But his amazing actions and strong spirit will always stay in our hearts and keep guiding China’s future.
Born in Guangdong Province in 1926, Huang saw his country had a very hard time under foreign attacks when he was young. These sad memories made him study hard, promising to use his knowledge to make his country stronger.
In the 1950s, when China started the difficult task of building nuclear submarines, Huang Xuhua stepped in without fear. Without advanced (先进的) technology or enough support, the task felt almost impossible. But he and his team took the challenge. To keep the project secret, they stopped talking to people outside, even their families. Huang Xuhua didn’t go back to his hometown for many years.
While designing, they faced many problems. For example, designing a nuclear reactor (反应堆) was very hard. Without help from other countries, they had to do their own research. Using basic tools like calculators and rulers, they worked hard to calculate (计算) and test. Another big problem was making sure the submarine stayed stable (稳定的) underwater. After many tries and tests, they slowly solved these problems.
Finally, in the 1970s, China’s first nuclear submarine was built and tested successfully, making China one of the few countries with this ability. Huang Xuhua didn’t stop there and he kept helping to improve submarine technology. His hard work brought him many awards, including the “Medal of the Republic” in 2019.
Now, as we remember him, we see that his life is encouraging. We, especially the younger people, should learn from his spirit. Let’s take his place, face challenges bravely, and work hard to make China stronger, keeping his spirit alive.
