一、阅读理解
My name is Olivia. I am 8 years old and live in Maine. My parents were separated (分开) from each other when I was 6 years old. This caused a lot of changes in my life.
I was surprised when they told me their decision. On my dad’s last day at home, I felt very sad. So did my dad.
After my mom and dad got divorced (离婚), my dad moved to a different town. My mom and I also moved. I missed my dad. These are all things that changed in my life. But there were lots of things that did not change. I still go to the same school. Even though I live in a new neighborhood, I still have the same friends at my school. When changes happened in my family, it took a while to get used to them. It was hard at first to understand all. Sometimes I missed my dad a lot and I felt lonely. I began to be more afraid of things, like the dark, and sleeping on my own. Talking with social workers (社工) was helpful. With their help, I got through the most difficult parts of my parents’ divorce. So when you are in trouble in life, you can turn to them for help.
If big changes happen in your life, you may feel worried and confused (迷惑的) about who will take care of you. You may be angry at your parents’ decisions. You could feel all kinds of these feelings. But that is normal. Just remember life changes. You have to learn to fit in with these changes. What has helped me most is writing down my thoughts along the way. I hope you can benefit from my story.

It is necessary to share your feelings with others. Sharing your feelings helps you to get closer to people you care about and who care about you.
Sometimes it can be really hard not to tell anyone that you’re feeling sad, worried, or upset. Don’t keep feelings locked inside. If that, it can even make you feel sick!
But if you talk with someone who cares for you, like your mom or dad, you will not be all alone with your problems or worries. It doesn’t mean your problems and worries go off, but at least someone else knows what your trouble is and can help you find ways to do with it.
If the person doesn’t understand what you mean right away, try explaining it in a different way or give an example that has something to do with you. Of course, there are many ways for you to speak up your feelings. If you think you'll have trouble saying what’s on your mind, write it down on a piece of paper.
Some of us, just like some adults (成年人), are more private (有隐私的) than others. That means some people will feel shy about sharing their feelings. A kid doesn’t have to share every feeling he or she has, but it is important to share feelings when a kid needs help.

But I didn’t know the number of my hotel and I didn’t want to worry my family if I really didn’t have to,” said Bob. He went on walking for three more days. Inside each and every one of us, there is a clock. This clock, affected (被影响) by the sunlight, controls (控制) our 24-hour sleep-wake cycles (睡眠—清醒周期). During winter in the northern hemisphere, when days grow shorter, this clock doesn’t get a strong enough wake-up signal (信号), making many people become slow and lazy. What’s worse, some people’s bodies need the sun so much that they develop seasonal affective disorder (SAD*), becoming sad.
“SAD is not unique to humans. Animals may also experience SAD,” says Kristine Gandia from Scotland.
To understand how SAD affects zoo animals, Gandia’s team picked 11 giant pandas to study. Pandas live in south China, much farther south than Scotland. Gandia and her team spent a year watching panda videos from five different zoos—some inside the animals’ natural habitats (自然栖息地) and others in the higher latitudes (纬度). Not surprisingly, they found pandas in the high latitude zoos were less active in winter.
Humans have already found ways to solve the problem of SAD, like trying spending more time outside and travelling to sunnier places in winter. For zoo animals, people can also implement some things to help them. “You can control light and temperature in zoos. If you can match the lighting of the natural environment indoors, these animals will feel happier,” says Gandia.
All that raises another question: What about pets Do they also experience SAD Gandia says that nobody has found the answer yet. That’s what her group wants to study next.

Last year, Bob visited Vancouver, Canada alone. He went there to give a talk on the environment (环境). When it was over, he travelled to the Rocky Mountains and stayed in the Maple Leaf Hotel. He then took a short walk to look at the local plants in the forest. After a few hours, he knew he took the wrong way, but was sure he could get back to the hotel.
However, after walking for several hours the next day, Bob knew he was in trouble. “I had my mobile phone, but the battery (电池) was almost dead. I could probably make just one call. But I didn’t know the number of my hotel and I didn’t want to worry my family if I really didn’t have to,” said Bob. He went on walking for three more days. He knew which plants he could eat and he had little trouble finding them.
On the fourth day, he knew there was no hope and decided to call his family. “He was quite calm when he spoke to me on the phone,” said Shirley, Bob’s wife. “He seemed (似乎) to be in control (操控) of the situation.” Shirley called the Maple Leaf Hotel at once. “That week lots of visitors went to the city to watch basketball games, and we thought Mr Rigsby went there too,” said the hotel owner. As soon as Shirley phoned, the hotel sent out some people to look for Bob. They found him about one hour later, and luckily he was quite unhurt.
“I will never go to the forest without a guide. I never want an experience like that again,” said Bob.

Children now usually sit all day and spend their time in front of the screens (屏幕). That’s not good for their health and growth. They should play more sports because sports are fun and they are really important for children.
Firstly, playing sports helps children keep healthy. Many children today don’t get enough exercise. This is one of the reasons why they are becoming too heavy. If a kid likes soccer and takes part in soccer games just twice a week, he or she will be much stronger.
Another benefit of playing sports is helping kids to accept failure (失败). Of course it is important to win a game, but if children lose a game, can they learn anything They will understand that they are not born winners, and then they can move on and go farther.
Playing a team sport also teaches children how to work together. Knowing how to work as a team is good for kids’ whole life. Team sports such as football and basketball help improve this skill.
