I was born with perfect hearing. When I was five, I started getting ear infections but my parents couldn’t afford the treatment. Over time, my hearing dropped to 20 percent, where it is today.
There was always music on in my house in my childhood. I loved listening to Metallica, and Michael Jackson. My dad was a DJ, so he played all music. For my 18th birthday, my dad asked me to deejay at the restaurant he owned. I was hooked. I desired to learn more. I e-mailed DJ Shiftee, a distinguished New York City DJ, when I was 25: “I know you like a challenge. How about teaching a deaf person to deejay ” He wrote back the next day: “Challenge accepted.” He tutored me twice a week for two years, helping me develop correct technique. I practiced four hours a day.
Now when I’m performing, muscle memory takes over. When I started, I wouldn’t tell the club managers that I was deaf. I would just show up, introduce myself, and start playing music. At the end of the night, someone would say, “Oh, here’s the check.” And I’d say, “What Oh, I can’t hear.” They were always so astonished. Sometimes I would bring doctor’s notes because they wouldn’t believe me. It was reassurance that they were giving me opportunities to perform because I was brilliant, not out of sympathy. Eventually people started calling me “that deaf DJ,” and the name stuck.
What fascinates me about deejaying is the creativity. I use software that turns the music into lines of color on a computer screen. I’m visually hearing the music. The next time you go dancing, cover your ears, and you’ll “see” the music. Music is not all about hearing. I go to elementary schools for the deaf and talk to them about motivation and believing in themselves. I tell them, “Just chase your dreams. I’m a deaf DJ, so why not ”
31.What inspired “my” passion for being a DJ
A.Hearing loss. B.Father’s influence.
C.Music education. D.Teachers’ guidance.
32.Why did “I” keep my deafness private before the performance
A.To surprise the audience. B.To avoid discrimination.
C.To keep the secret. D.To show off talent.
33.What does the underlined “stuck” in Para. 3 probably mean
A.Became established. B.Changed.
C.Became ordinary. D.Faded.
34.Why do “I” love deejaying
A.It strengthens my confidence. B.It improves my hearing ability.
C.It enhances my physical fitness. D.It wins me reputation and money.
Patricia Cowell, a professor at the University of Sheffield in the United Kingdom, stresses that though left-handedness is referred to as “atypical” from time to time, there’s no need for concern.
“It’s not anything negative as such. It’s just different from the majority,” Cowell said. “I think the thing that’s really important is that it is a very constant biological variation within normal development.”
Cowel studies handednes and brain lateralization (偏侧性): how different abilities like language or visual processing are organized within the brain. “If someone is left-handed, their brain organization is going to be different than someone who is right-handed,” Cowell said.
Before the age of the laptop-filed lecture hall, Cowell would sit at the front of the room and count the number of lefties in her classes while students completed five-minute thought experiments. Although the small sample size caused some variation from class to class, around 1 in 10 students were left-handed. This distribution is present in the general population as well — it is thought that around 10% of people around the world are left-handed. “It is pretty fixed,” Cowell said. “You can always find a few in a big group.”
And there’s some evidence that the distribution of handedness has lasted for thousands of years, with right-handers in the strong majority and left-handers comprising a mere part. To study examples of handedness in history, French researchers examined Western European cave artwork dating back 10,000 to 30,000 years. Ancient artists would hold their non-dominant hands against a rock wall and use their dominant hand to blow colored dust onto it using a blowing tube, creating a negative image of their hand on the rock. The distribution of handedness found in cave art is consistent with what we see today.
Roel Willems is a senior researcher at the Donders Institute for Brain Cognition and Behaviour in the Netherlands. “Other animals also tend to have a handedness preference,” Willems said. “But there is no other species (other than humans) that seems at the population level to be so strongly biased (偏见的) .”
35.What’s Patricia Cowell’s view on left-handedness
A.It is physically unacceptable. B.It is only natural and normal.
C.It is an issue of great importance. D.It may bring negative consequences.
36.How did Cowell get data for her research on handedness
A.By counting the lefties in class. B.By conducting experiments in the lab.
C.By interviewing students online. D.By doing the sampling with a laptop.
37.What does the underlined word “It” in paragraph 4 refer to
A.The number of right-handers. B.The increasing population.
C.The percentage of left-handers. D.The sample size in a group.
38.Why did French researchers study Western European cave artwork
A.To show the advantages of right-handers.
B.To prove the existence of left-handedness.
C.To find other animals’ handedness preferences.
D.To learn about the distribution of handedness in history.
Casting blame is natural: it is tempting to fault someone else for a mistake rather than taking responsibility yourself. But blame is also harmful. It makes it less likely that people will own up to mistakes, and thus less likely that organizations can learn from them. Research published in 2015 suggests that firms whose managers pointed to external factors to explain their failings underperformed companies that blamed themselves.
Blame culture can spread like a virus. Just as children fear mom and dad’s punishment if they admit to wrongdoing, in a blaming environment, employees are afraid of criticism and punishment if they acknowledge making a mistake at work. Blame culture asks, “Who dropped the ball ” instead of “Where did our systems and processes fail ” The focus is on the individuals, not the processes. It’s much easier to point fingers at a person or department instead of doing the harder, but the more beneficial, exercise of fixing the root cause, so the problem does not happen again.
The No Blame Culture was introduced to make sure errors and deficiencies (缺陷) were highlighted by employees as early as possible. It originated in organizations where tiny errors can have catastrophic consequences: These are known as high reliability organizations (HROs) and include hospitals, submarines and airlines. Because errors can be so disastrous in these organizations, it’s dangerous to operate in an environment where employees don’t feel able to report errors that have been made or raise concerns about that deficiencies may turn into future errors. The No Blame Culture maximizes accountability because all contributions to the event occurring are identified and reviewed for possible change and improvement.
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), which supervises air traffic across the United States, makes it clear that its role is not to assign blame or liability but to find out what went wrong and to issue recommendations to avoid a repeat. The proud record of the airline industry in reducing accidents partly reflects no-blame processes for investigating crashes and close calls. The motive to learn from errors also exists when the risks are lower. That is why software engineers and developers routinely investigate what went wrong if a website crashes or ‘a server goes down.
There is an obvious worry about embracing blamelessness. What if the website keeps crashing and the same person is at fault Sometimes, after all, blame is deserved. The idea of the “just culture”, a framework developed in the 1990s by James Reason, a psychologist, addresses the concern that the incompetent and the malevolent (恶意的) will be let off the hook. The line that Britain’s aviation regulator draws between honest errors and the other sort is a good starting-point It promises a culture in which people “are not punished for actions or decisions taken by them that are commensurate with their experience and training”. That narrows room for blame but does not remove it entirely.
39.According to the research published in 2015, companies that ________ had better performance.
A.blamed external factors B.owned up to mistakes
C.conducted investigations D.admitted failures
40.According to the passage, the No Blame Culture ________.
A.encourages the early disclosure of errors
B.only exists in high reliability organizations
C.enables people to shift the blame onto others
D.prevents organizations to learn from errors
41.What is the major concern about embracing blamelessness according to the passage
A.Innocent people might take the blame by admitting their failure.
B.Being blamed for mistakes can destroy trust in employees.
C.The line between honest errors and the other sort is not clear.
D.People won’t learn their lessons if they aren’t blamed for failures.
42.Which of the following is the best title for the passage
A.Why We Fail to Learn from Our Own Mistakes
B.How to Avoid Disastrous Errors in Organizations
C.Why We Should Stop the Blame Game at Work
D.How to Deal with Workplace Blame Culture
This is something that all of us have noticed countless times in our daily lives. Whether you’re trying to read the fine print in a commercial or trying to make out a person’s face from a distance — it always helps to see better when you squint (眯起) your eyes. 43
There’s a common assumption that you’re adding much stress to your eyeballs by squeezing them to make them work better. 44 If you think for a while, you’ll find squinting is a different matter. If squinting meant making your eyes become stress balls, we’d all be in a lot of trouble.
45 When light hits an object, it bounces off its surface and enters our eyes. The light travels through the eye lens (晶状体). The lens then focuses the light rays, which fall on the retina (视网膜). A chemical present in the retina turns light into electric signals, which are then transmitted to the brain. The brain processes the signals and ultimately allows us to see stuff.
The act of squinting, quite obviously, alters the shape of the space through which light passes, which helps us form a clear image on the retina. What’s more, light from different directions enters and is subsequently perceived by the eye. 46 However, when you’re trying to focus on something, if there’s light entering from multiple directions, the lens will be overloaded. By squinting, focusing light rays becomes more precise.
Squinting does not damage your eyesight. 47 It’s one thing to occasionally squint in order to make out something far away. But if you find yourself doing it all the time, getting your eyes tested should be your focus.
A.Actually, that’s not exactly the case.
B.Has it ever occurred to you why this happens
C.Squinting does two major things to improve our vision.
D.However, doing it for long periods of time can lead to dry eyes.
E.Normally, this is a great thing, as it feeds your situational awareness.
F.A number of biological components actually constitute the human eye.
G.Before revealing the secret behind it, let’s learn about how we see things.

Seeing Jack’s innocent eyes, the grandfather nodded. However, without saying anything, he took Jack to a nearby nursery. From the nursery, his grandpa bought two small plants and came back home. Then he planted one plant in a pot and kept it inside the house and planted the other outside the house. After finishing planting, he asked Jack, “Which of these two plants do you think will grow better in the future ”
Jack kept thinking for some time and then said, “That plant inside the house will grow better because it is safe from every danger while the plant outside is at risk of many things like strong sunlight, storms, animals and so on.”
The grandfather smiled and said, “Let’s see what will happen in the future.” After that Jack left with his parents. Four years later, Jack came back to visit his grandfather again. Upon seeing his grandfather, Jack said, “Grandpa, last time I asked you some ways to be successful, but you did not tell me anything. This time you have to tell me.”

The grandfather looked at Jack and asked, “Tell me which plant grew better ” Jack pointed at the huge tree standing outside with a confused look. Seeing the boy’s innocent eyes and sensing his uncertainty, the grandfather explained that while the plant outside had to face many challenges, overcoming these difficulties ultimately made it stronger. With a smile, he added, “In order to fight against rainstorms, it needed to stand firm; to survive droughts, it should force itself to root in depth. As a result, it grew strong and resilient, capable of enduring anything. Isn’t it impressive ”
Jack nodded, the grandfather continued his words. “Four years ago, you asked me about ways to be successful. Now, the tree is the answer,” the grandfather said. As Jack gazed at the huge tree with its branches spreading far and wide and providing shade to passers-by, his grandfather elaborated that being ready to face this world despite all the dangers meant no goal was impossible to achieve.
