Have you ever wondered why you spend so much of your life sleeping Just like electricity charges the battery of a mobile phone, sleep recharges your body and your mind.
Sleep is a natural and temporary state of rest, brought on by your “body clock”—a system inside your brain that helps you sleep at night and wake up in the morning. Even though you are not aware of your surroundings when you sleep, your brain remains active.
Humans could not function without sleep. According to the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health, sleep helps people learn by strengthening their memories. It has physical benefits, too—like maintaining a healthy weight and boosting your immune system. Too little sleep can make you tired and bad-tempered. Your brain becomes foggy, making it difficult to concentrate and make decisions. That’s why you may be told to “sleep on” a choice you’re uncertain about.
Dreams usually occur during a stage of sleep known as rapid eye movement (REM) sleep. In REM, the eyes move quickly back and forth and brain activity increases. Scientists are not sure why people dream. Some say it is a process that helps store memories; others say it helps people process emotions. Everybody dreams for around two hours a night but not everyone can remember them.
Doctors say sleep is especially important for children and teenagers because their minds and bodies are still developing. Most adults need around eight hours of sleep, but Mandy Gurney, who runs the Millpond Children’s Sleep Clinic, says that children need more. “An eight-year-old requires around 10 to 10-and-a-half hours of sleep each night, dropping to around nine hours a night in your teen years.” A good night’s sleep will get your day off to a great start. As Mahatma Gandhi, who was an Indian politician and activist, was quoted as saying, “When I wake up, I am reborn.”

“Jelly” ice may one day replace the cubes chilling your cold drink. Jelly ice cubes are made of hydrogels(水凝胶). They can be used again and again, which can save water. Plus, unlike plastic freezer packs, at the end of their useful life, they won’t leave behind long-lived plastic waste. You can also use these cubes to boost garden growth.
Finally, they may make storage of frozen food cleaner. Actually, that’s where “the original idea started,” says Luxin Wang, a microbiologist at the University of California (UC), Davis. As regular ice melts, bacteria can hitch a ride in that water to other foods stored in the same place.
The UC Davis team packed food samples into foam-insulated containers and chilled the food with jelly ice cubes or regular ice. Sensors measured changes in the food’s temperature. Normal ice worked better, but not by much. For example, after 50 minutes, the temperature of an ice-cooled sample was 3.4℃. The sample cooled by jelly ice cubes was 4.4℃.
They also tested the hydrogel’s strength. Its structure is made mostly of a protein called gelatin(明胶). Hydrogels with a higher gelatin percentage were stronger but showed lower cooling efficiency. Tests revealed that hydrogels with 10% gelatin showed the best balance of cooling and strength.
Now jelly ice cubes aren’t yet ready. “This is a prototype” Wang says. “As we move forward, there will be additional improvements.” The eco-friendly potential of the cubes is the “big goal”, according to Wang. The hydrogel could promote a “circular economy,” she says. “When you use up something, such as these cubes, they could go back to the environment.”
28. What does the first paragraph tell us about jelly ice cubes
A. They are efficient. B. They are practical.
C. They are eco-friendly. D. They are easily operated.
29. What was the purpose of the UC Davis team’s experiment in paragraph 3
A. To test the use of jelly ice cubes in real life.
B. To test the ability to chill food of jelly ice cubes.
C. To test the cleaning efficiency of jelly ice cubes.
D To test the reaction of jelly ice cubes in containers.
30. What plays the most important role in the hydrogel’s strength
A. The type of gelatin used. B. The amount of gelatin used.
C. The size of the jelly ice cube. D. The temperature of the jelly ice cube.

A. A typical example. B. An advanced model.
C. A full-scale model of a vehicle. D. An original model.

Following the disastrous handling of COVID-19, the spread of monkeypox is another microcosm (社会缩影) of the racial gaps and health inequity in the United States.
With the number of infections surpassing 20,000, the United States now leads the world in monkeypox cases. Like a replay of the COVID-19 outbreak, Black and Hispanic Americans in the country still bear an improper burden in the public health emergency. They make up the majority of monkeypox cases but are underrepresented in vaccine distribution.
Signs show the number of infections in the country is slowing, but racial divides are worsening in monkeypox cases and vaccine access. Over 38 percent of the monkeypox infections are among Black people, who represent only 13.6 percent of the country’s population of 335 million. Similarly, Hispanic or Latino people account for 28.3 percent of the total cases as of Sept. 3 but are only 19 percent of the U.S. population. By contrast, the share of White people in the total contracted cases fell heavily from 75 percent as of May 20 to 27.5 percent, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Similar trends in racial gaps can be seen among U.S. states and cities with the most monkey pox cases. For example, Black or African American residents make up 55 percent of all monkey pox cases but just 24 percent of vaccinations in Philadelphia, city data showed. White Philadelphians make up 24 percent of cases but have received 56 percent of first shots.
“Unfortunately, it’s not that surprising,” said Mark Abdelmalek, a dermatologist who has treated monkey pox patients. “History kind of repeats itself. We see unfair health treatment across many aspects of medicine, and to think that this wouldn’t be one of them is a little naive.” The dermatologist added, “I mean we saw it with COVID. It speaks to the fact that we have a lot of work to do to meet people where they are.”
32. What can be inferred from Para 3
A. The scale of monkey pox infections is declining.
B. Monkey pox has caused a great loss to the US.
C. Monkey is more dangerous to Black, Hispanic and Latino People.
D. White Americans are favored in monkey pox cases and vaccine access.
33. What may be the reason for White Philadelphians having lower infection
A. Having vaccinations. B. Using masks.
C. Taking fine medicine. D. Avoiding contacting Black people.
34. What does Mark Abdelmalek think of the current monkey pox situation
A. Inspiring. B. Satisfying. C. Disappointing. D. Interesting.
35. What is the best title for the passage
A. Monkey pox breaks out widely in the US B. Monkey pox again exposes U.S. racial gaps
C. Covid-19 is handled terribly in the USA D. Monkey pox is getting more severe than Covid-19

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料, 根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段, 使之构成一篇完整的短文。
I was a single mother in my 30s who lived down and out with my daughter Peggy in a small apartment, struggling hard to make our needs meet.
One day, I headed to the downtown for an interview. I sat down in the streetcar, and there against the seat was a beautiful silk umbrella with a silver handle decorated with gold scrolls, among which there was a name carved.
On impulse(冲动) I determined to find the owner myself. I got off the streetcar in the heavy rain and thankfully opened the umbrella to protect myself. Then I searched a telephone book for the name, I found it immediately and called it, waiting patiently, and then a lady answered.
"Yes, “she said in surprise, with extreme excitement." It was my umbrella which had been stolen a year ago.”
So appealing was her pleasure that I forgot I was looking for a job and went directly to her small house. She took the umbrella, with teary eyes, explaining with choking voice that the umbrella was given by her parents, now dead, Her happiness at retrieving(找回)this special possession was such that to have accepted her reward would have spoiled something, so I refused her offer and left.
The following months were hard. I can only obtain temporary employment, for a small salary. What was worse, I had just lost my last job before Christmas, with only fifteen dollars left. Unless a miracle happened, I would be homeless in January, foodless and jobless. I had prayed steadily for weeks, and there had been no answer but this coldness and darkness.
The air was full of Christmas merriment, with the bells ringing and children shouting in the bitter dusk of the evening. But there should be no Christmas for me, I knew, no gifts, no remembrance whatsoever.
Thinking of this, I couldn’t control my tears on my way home, but I managed a smile so could greet my little daughter. She opened the door for me and threw herself in my arms, screaming joyously and demanding desirably for her Christmas gift. There I stood, frozen, overwhelmed by misery.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答
Suddenly, the doorbell rang and Peggy rushed to answer it, calling that it must be Santa Claus.

Dear Henry,
I'm happy to receive your letter and know that you're coming to China. I’m writing to sincerely express my warmest welcome.
I'd like to tell you something about some places of interest in China. Personally, one of the best is the Great Wall of China. It came into being during the Warring States period and reached its best in Ming Dynasty as defence working against enemies. With a history of over 2,000 years, it runs like a huge dragon across North China. And now it’s a world-famous tourist attraction. As an old Chinese saying goes, “A man who hasn't been to the Great Wall is not a true man”, and it’s almost a must for foreigners to visit in China.”
If you come to visit the Great Wall, you'd better come a day before climbing the Wall and avoid weekends or holidays, when it is too crowded with tourists, so as to enjoy its beauty more peacefully. Moreover, I can be your guide if you like.
Yours,
Li Hua
【答案】Suddenly, the doorbell rang and Peggy rushed to answer it, calling that it must be Santa Claus. Then I heard man talking heartily to her and went to the door, He was a delivery man, and his arms were full of parcels. “This is a mistake, " I said, but he read the name on the parcels and they were for me. When he had gone, I didn't know what to do. Later, Peggy and I sat on the floor looking at each other. What a surprise! I looked for the name of the sender.
Suddenly, a note attached to one package caught my eyes. I picked up the note, which read "Thanks for returning of the umbrella. Merry Christmas! ""It was sent by the lady. Holding the note tightly, I was on the verge of tears, with a stream of warmth spreading through my body. On that cold Christmas, I forgot I had no money for the rent and only fifteen dollars in my pocket. We just sat in our small apartment unwrapping the gifts one by one in happiness. A sweet peace flooded me like a blessing which made me hopeful again。
