There are competitions held all over the world that attract millions of viewers every year. Here are four of the
craziest competitions in the world.
Worm (幼虫) CharmingChampionship
This competition involves contestants using a small area of grass and a number of different methods to try and
attract as many worms as possible from the ground in a set amount of time. Participants use everything to make
noise in the ground to try and drive the worms out. The current world record is held by 10-year-old Sophie Smith

England, every year. It’s very similar to arm wrestling and sees competitors lock toes and wrestle until one of them
“pins” the other’s foot for 3 seconds.

and style the best bear d and moustache. The competition actually has 17 differentcategories, including Best
Freestyle Moustache, Best Natural Goatee and the all-time classic: Best Natural Full Bear d and Styled Moustache.

The WorldSauna Championships were held in Heinola, Finland and ran from 1999 to 2010. The crazy
competition saw contestants sit in a sauna for as long as possible, with the winner being the last person standing (or
rather sitting and sweating). The starting temperature was 110degrees and water would be poured onto the stove
every 30 seconds. The competition came to an end in 2010, though, when tragedy struck and one of the contestants

Xi Zhinong was born in a small town in YunnanProvince. When he was young, he moved to Kunming with
his mother. Feeling like a caged bird in a big city, he was bored with the busy and noisy city life and looked
forward to nature.
His chance soon came. In 1983, he helped shoot (拍摄) a documentary about birds. That experience led him to
learn photography and take photos of flying birds.
In the 1980s, the Internet was not that popular in China and cameras were expensive. He managed to borrow a
camera and threw himself into studying how to use it. During that time, the library became his favorite place where
he first read some magazines about nature. It opened a door for him to connect with nature.
In 1992, a research program was organized to protect a type of unusual monkeys living only in China. Usually,
the home of these monkeys has half-a-year-long winters. It created great challenges for Xi Zhinong’s work, but he
never drew back. “Ididn’t see the monkeys in the wild until I went into the mountains the third time,” said Xi
Zhinong. He went into the snow mountains six times just to get valuable photographs of the monkeys.
Several years later, his works won international prizes. People around the world began to pay attention to the
protection of wild animals in China. And he is the first Chinese winner of the world-famous WildlifePhotographer
of the Year.
In order to call on tons of people to protect wildlife with cameras, he started “ChinaWildlifePhotography

Obesity (肥胖) is often considered a key factor in the likelihood of early death, but a new review reveals that
cardiorespiratory (心肺) fitness actually has more of an influence on mortality (死亡) risk and long-term health. In
other words, being fit matters more than being thin when it comes to living longer and staying healthy for longer.
The findings could be a reason to change public health strategies and treatments.
“As a society, we tend to link body weight or fatness with health status,” says kinesiologist Nathan Weeldryer,
from the University of Virginia.“Our study, with the largest and most globally representative sample to date, aims
to shift views on the relationship between fitness and body fat.”
Researchers from the US and UK analyzed 20 studies from 1980—2023, with 398,716 participants. The
data covered BMI, cardiorespiratory fitness, and mortality risk. The team found that the risk of an early death for
individuals with obesity who were fit was similar to that of people classed as fit and of normal weight. What’s more,
having obesity and being fit meant a longer life on average than having a normal weight and being unfit. While the
data didn’t show fitness as being the only factor involved, it highlighted just how important it is in our overall
health.
“Fitness is far more important than fatness for mortality risk,” says exercise physiologist Siddhartha Angadi,
from the University of Virginia.“Exercise is more than just a way to expend calories. It can largely reduce the risk
of cardiovascular disease and all-cause death.” The researchers aren’t dismissing the health burden of obesity:
around 1 in 8 are obese globally and the numbers are rising. It raises the risk of high blood pressure, cancers, and
other diseases.
However, the relationship between obesity and the risk of an early death isn’t clear-cut. The research team
advocates more emphasis on exercise and less on weight loss. “Repetitive cycles of losing and gaining weight—
yo-yo dieting—are associated with numerous health risks,” says exercise physiologist Glenn Gaesser, from
Arizona State University. “Improving cardiorespiratory fitness may help avoid bad health effects.”
8. Why did researchers conduct the research
A. Todeny obesity’s link to early death.
B. Todiscover the best weight-loss ways.
C. Toupdate views on the weight-fitness connection.
D. Tostress large samples’ importance in research.
9. What is paragraph 3 mainly about
A. Supporting evidence for the research results.
B. Potential application of the research findings.
C. A further explanation of the research methods.
D. A reasonable doubt about the research process.
10. What does exercise physiologist Siddhartha Angadi suggest
A. Making use of the findings.
B. Interviewing the study participants.
C. Conducting further research.
D. Clarifying the purpose of the study.
11.What will the follow-up study focus on
A. Obesity and disease.B. Weight-lossimpact.
C. Yo-yodieting risks.D. Fitness benefits.

Across the flat plateau of AlUla in Saudi Arabia, shades of gray-brown soil are dotted with areas of dark rock
—and a clearly defined circle of stones. Unmistakably constructed by humans, this structure, called “standing
stone circles” by archaeologists, was built around 7,500 years ago by a people we barely know for a purpose we
have long misunderstood.
In 2019, archaeologists from the University of WesternAustralia began excavating (发掘) these standing stone
circles. Their initial idea was that these were structures built by Neolithic nomads (新石器时代的游牧民) for some
long-forgotten religious practices. However, excavating at multiple sites, they found what turned out to be
archaeological pay dirt—domestic rubbish. The remains of discarded animal bones, household tools, and even
jewelry, have reclassified the standing stone circles as Neolithic homes.
Standing stone circles seem to have sprung up around 5,800 to 5,500 B.C. This coincided with a warmer
climate in the region that brought more regular rainfall and a landscape of rich grasses and trees, good conditions
for raising cattle and goats. But these were also good conditions for building permanent structures. More abundant
vegetation meant less pressure to keep moving the animals to fresh grasslands, which made building homes more
worthwhile. This, and the plateau’s abundance of stones, may have encouraged the nomads to stay a while and
build.
Excavations of these settlements are revealing something of this people’s way of life. They kept cattle and
goats for meat, but continued to hunt and gather to expand their diet with hare, fruits and nuts. The many grinding
(磨碎) stones found on the sites suggest inhabitants were regularly grinding grains, but these were likely to be
gathered rather than farmed. The plateau sites have also revealed tools made with materials from the sandstone
valleys and jewelry shaped from shells from the Red Sea—these Neolithic people had a complex culture
involving travel and probably exchange.
The revelation overturns many of our assumptions about Neolithic AlUla. Here was a people more settled and
more civilized than history has given them credit for. Their story is just beginning to be revealed, but already a very
different picture of early AIUla is emerging.
12. What did the 2019 excavation finally identify the “standing stone circles” as
A. Religious sites.B. Rubbish stations.
C. Domestic buildings.D. Natural wonders.
13. What was a contributing factor in the building of the standing stone circles
A. The worsening climate.B. The richness of plants.
C. The desire to raise more animals.D. The need to store goods.
14. What is most likely TRUE about Neolithic people’s way of life in AlUla
A. They planted crops and kept cattle and goats.
B. They relied entirely on hunting and gathering for food.
C. They had interactions with other groups.
D. They made tools and jewelry purely from local materials.
15. What is the purpose of the text
A. Toprovide some new insights.B. Tointroduce an ancient population.
C. Topromote a historical site.D. Toargue for some long-held beliefs.

I met Sam on a rainy, windy and chaotic morning in August. I had planned to take a train to Boston and then
catch a coach to Harvard University for an important academic conference. Due to a track accident, my train was
delayed by two hours. I arrived at the train station in Boston just 25 minutes before the departure of the last coach
that could take me to the university on time. The moment I got offthe train, I rushed like mad through the station
building and jumped into the first car in the taxi queue (队列) without hesitation.
That was when I met Sam. I told him where I was going, but he said he wasn’t familiar with the nearest coach
station to Harvard. I thought my explanation was not clear enough, so I provided more detailed information,
including the names of nearby landmarks, but he still looked puzzled. When I was about to lose hope, Sam took out
his smartphone and searched online. After a long and intense search that seemed like forever, Sam finally found the
right route and started the car.
Finally, with just three minutes to spare we pulled into the coach station. Thankfully, there was a long line still
waiting to board the coach. Sam parked the car nearby, turned around, and looked at me with a big smile on his
face. “Wemade it,” he said.
Just then I realized that my wallet was left at home. I gave him an embarrassed and panicked look as I
searched through my bag in vain. I had no cash and the mobile payment app on my phone was malfunctioning. A

I ran back to Sam and told him the bad news.“I left my wallet at home and I have no way to pay you right
now,” I stammered, my voice shaking. Sam looked at me in disbelief for a moment, then his expression softened.
Withouthesitation, he pulled out some cash and handed it to me. “Here, this should cover your fare. Don’t worry
about it. Youcan pay me later,” he said kindly, writing down his phone number. “Call me when you get the chance.”
Overwhelmed with gratitude, I thanked him profusely and rushed to board the coach just in time.
One day later, when I was back in Boston, I called Sam as promised. He answered cheerfully and picked me
up from the coach station. On the way to the train station, we chatted happily. I expressed my thanks again, telling
him how his help had made the conference possible. Upon arrival, I paid him back the borrowed money along with
a generous tip he declined. I also gave him a souvenir from the conference, which he accepted with delight. Our
brief encounter had turned into a lasting friendship. Wevowed to stay in touch, and I felt truly fortunate to have
met such a warm-hearted friend like Sam.
