Last summer at a bookstore, my son Henry was attracted by the cover of the first novel from Peter Brown’s middle-grade trilogies (三部曲). He then finished it in just two days. “Dad, why did The Wild Robot have to be so sad ” He asked me with tears in his eyes. What book was so attractive and made a boy so sad I wanted to read it.
The story happened on a distant island, where a robot named Roz learns to survive (存活) and communicate with the island’s creatures (生物), and becomes a part of the community. For my son, it was the first book he found by himself, the first to influence him with the mix of sad and happy things.
When I finished the book, I knew why Henry loved it. In our discussion, he said how Brown’s pictures and words made the story seem real. When talking about its final scenes, where Roz leaves to repair her injured body, Henry cried again. His reading in the past was mostly about happy endings, but this book let him know about the beauty of complex (复杂的) feelings. I tried to tell him how sadness could improve the meaning of happiness, but couldn’t make him fully believe.
After our discussion, Henry bought The Wild Robot Escapes and fell in love with it. He read the first two books over and over again. So you can imagine how excited he was when we finally got a copy of The Wild Robot Protects.
There is something special about Roz: her physical slowness and confusion (迷惑) about life showed through her eyes and downturned mouth. Roz’s story shows the difficulties of surviving in a strange place, much like a child’s growth journey.
Readers love Roz. They learn from her. Even better, they grow when they are reading about her. Roz gave Henry the power to overcome the sad parts of the first book, getting him ready to appreciate that. It made him understand that sometimes, sadness is not a bad thing to feel. It helped readers get more.
6 Why did the writer want to read The Wild Robot
A. Because it’s a book with a sad ending.
B. Because the writer was interested in reading books.
C. Because the book seemed attractive and made his kid cry.
D. Because it’s one of Peter Brown’s middle-grade trilogies.
7. What influence did this book have on Henry
A. It made him read faster.
B. It made him only like sad stories.
C. It made him stop reading other books.
D. It made him know the beauty of complex feelings.
8. How many times did Henry read the first two books
A. Once. B. Twice. C. Three times. D. Many times.
9. What might Roz’s story make readers think of
A. A scientist’s study. B. A reader’s changes.
C. A child’s growth journey. D. A robot’s development.
10. What does the passage mainly talk about
A. Henry’s personal growth with reading.
B. The influence of a father’s reading on his son.
C. Roz’s difficulties of surviving in a strange place.
D. An introduction of Peter Brown’s middle-grade trilogies.
C
“You are just like your mother.” It is often said by many people. As we grow older, we may notice that we’re getting more like our mother. Yet surprisingly, a new research has found that most people are more similar to their father.
A team of scientists from the University of North Carolina School of Medicine in the US found that we inherit (继承) equal amounts of genes (基因) from mother and father. But we use more of the DNA we inherit from our father.
The study helps us to partly explain who we are. And more importantly, it helps us to find out whether we are likely to develop diseases. For example, if we inherit the gene for a disease from our mother, it may not be as strong as if we had inherited it from our father.
We know that there are 95 genes affected by our parents, said lead researcher Professor Fernando Pardo-Manuel de Villena. These are called imprinted genes (印记基因). But now, the study has found that there are thousands of other genes that have come from our parents.
For the study, the scientists selected (挑选) three different species of mice with different genes. The mice then gave birth to nine babies each. When they all reached adulthood, the team then measured (测量) every single gene of their DNA.
They found an imbalance that swung toward their father. Villena also said that the recent study was the first to show that mammals (哺乳动物) are more similar to their fathers than mothers. “This is an exceptional new research finding that opens the door to a new area of exploration in human genetics,” he said.
11. How does the writer introduce the topic
A. By listing a series of genetic facts.
B. By giving an example of a common saying.
C. By telling us a story about a family’s genes.
D. By asking us a question about the genetic similarity.
12. Which one is the main idea of Paragraph 3
A. The finding helps us predict possible diseases.
B. We are supposed to be stronger than our parents.
C. We inherit exactly the same diseases from parents.
D. We don’t inherit the gene of a disease from our mother.
13. What does the underlined word “they” in Paragraph 5 refer to
A. The mother mice. B. The baby mice.
C. The scientists. D. The imprinted genes.
14. What can we know about the study
A. The study was done only on humans to find out why we look like our parents.
B. The study was done to count the number of imprinted genes (印记基因) from parents.
C. In the study, scientists found that mice are always more similar to their mothers than their fathers.
D. Scientists measured (测量) the genes of adult mice to discover that mammals inherit more genes from fathers.
15. What is the main purpose of this passage
A. To talk about different kinds of genes.
B. To talk about how to do a study on genes.
C. To show the importance of genes from mothers.
D. To tell us a new study result that people are more like their fathers.

An unforgettable experience
One unforgettable experience in my life was when I took part in an English speech contest last year. It was an excellent journey that made a big difference to me.
Before the arrival of the English speech contest, I spent weeks preparing my speech, practicing my pronunciation and gestures every day. When the day of the contest came, I was really nervous. Standing on the stage, looking at the audience, my heart was beating fast. But as I started speaking, I gradually became more confident. I felt extremely proud of myself when I finished the speech. You couldn’t imagine how excited I was when I heard that I won the first prize. And the applause from the audience made me feel that all my efforts paid off.
From this experience, I learned that no matter how difficult the task is, as long as we work hard and don’t give up, we will achieve something. And we should also have the courage to step out of our comfort zone (舒适区) and show ourselves.
