Rome had the Forum, London has Speaker’s Corner. Now always-on-the-go New Yorkers have Liz and Bill. Liz and Bill, two college graduates in their early 20s, have spent a whole year trying to have thousands of people talk to them in subway stations and on busy street corners. Just talk.
Using a 2-foot-tall sign that says,“Talk to Me,” they attract conversationalists, who one evening included a mental patient, and men in business suits. They don’t collect money. They don’t push religion(宗教). So what’s the point “To see what happens,” said Liz. “ We simply enjoy life with open communication.” Shortly after the September 11, 2001 attacks, they decided to walk from New York City to Washington, a 270-mile trip. They found they loved talking to people along the way and wanted to continue talking with strangers after their return.
“It started as a crazy idea,” Liz said.“ We were so curious about all the strangers walking by with their life stories. People will talk to us about anything:their jobs, their clothes, their childhood experiences, anything.” Denise wanted to talk about an exam she was about to take. She had stopped by for the second time in two days, to let the two listeners know how it went.
Marcia had lost her husband to a serious disease. “That was very heavy on my mind,” Marcia said, “To be able to talk about it to total strangers was very good,” she explained. To celebrate a year of talking, the two held a get-together in a city park for all the people they had met over the past year. A few hundred people showed up, as well as some television cameramen and reporters. They may plan more parties or try to attract more people to join their informal talks. Some publishers have expressed interest in a book, something they say they’ll consider.

Desertification and Sandstorms (DSS) has great environmental _____ that cause large economic losses, has a serious effect on public health over a wide area, and sometimes takes human life. For example, the DSS on 5 May, 1993 directly affected1.1 million square kilometers in China, which resulted in 85 persons dead, 256injured, 120,000 livestock dead or lost, and a great deal of cropland damaged.
The two worst DSSs in the ten years took place in March and April 2002. They swept across Mongolia and hit 18 provinces in China, the Korean Peninsular, and a large area of Japan. The DSS in April forced Mongolia to close its international airport in Ulaanbaatar for 3 days, and the Republic of Korea to close some schools and take off more than 40 flights from Kimpo Airport in Seoul. Natural causes of DSS are large desert and semi desert areas, strong winds from Siberia sweeping these DSS originating source areas, lasting drought, and other natural disasters.
Their effects have been strengthened, however, by human activities over the last few years, particularly through overgrazing, deforestation, and overexploitation of water resources in the DSS originating source areas, which lead to rapid land desertification. So, effective actions are urgently needed in the DSS originating source areas in China and Mongolia to prevent desertification of the land, before the situation becomes worse.

A Thousand and One Nights, which is also called the Arabian Nights, is a collection of West and South Asian stories and folk tales in Arabic during the Islamic Golden Age. The main frame story (框架故事) concerns a king and his wife.
The story goes that every day the King Shahryar would marry a young woman and kill her the next morning. This was done in anger because he found his first wife was unfaithful (不忠的) to him. He had killed 1,000 such women by the time he was introduced to Scheherazade. Against her father’s wishes, Scheherazade volunteered to spend one night with the king. Once in the king’s palace, Scheherazade asked if she might bid one last farewell (告别) to her beloved sister, Dinazade, who had secretly been prepared to ask Scheherazade to tell a story during the long night. The king lay awake and listened as Scheherazade told her first story. The night passed by, and Scheherazade stopped in the middle of the story. The king asked her to finish, but Scheherazade said there was no time, as dawn (黎明) was breaking. So, the king spared her life for one day to the next night. So the next night, Scheherazade finished the story and then began a second, even more exciting story which she again stopped halfway through at dawn. So the king again spared her life for one day to finish the second story.
And so the King kept Scheherazade alive day by day, as he eagerly anticipated the finishing of last night’s story. At the end of 1,001 nights, and 1,000 stories, Scheherazade told the king that she had no more stories to tell him. During these 1,001 nights, the king had fallen in love with Scheherazade, and so he spared her life, and made her his queen.

“Happy NewYear!” Everyone will greet each other with these words as they meet each other on New Year’s Day. But it wasn’t always January 1 that marked the New Year.
At least 4,000 years ago,the ancient Egyptians and Babylonians marked the changing of the year. In Egypt, the year started when the Nile River flooded, enriching farmers’ fields. This happened at the end of September.
The Babylonians held a festival in the spring, on March 23, to kick off the next farming cycle. The Babylonian celebration lasted for 11 days.
The date January 1 waspicked by the Roman Emperor Julius Caesar as the change of the year when he established his own calendar in 46 BC. The month of January originates from the Roman god, Janus. He is pictured with two heads. One head looks forward and the other back. They represent a break between the old and new. The new calendar was in time with the sun and it has been used until the present day.
In Vietnam, the New Year holiday happens in February. They buy fresh flowers and a peach blossom to put in their house, following the Vietnamese custom.
Thailand has its specific New Year’s date; it’s different from the normal calendar. The ThaiNew Year is celebrated on April 13. On this day, Thai people play with water, throwing it on each other. It is intended to bring good luck during the NewYear ahead.
In China, the more favorable New Year is usually celebrated in February according to lunar calendar (阴历). On NewYear’s Eve, all family members sit together at table, enjoying lots of auspicious foods such as dumplings, chicken to bring good luck.

There are a number of special days of the year that are celebrated in different countries. One of the most popular of these, even though it is fairly recent, is Mother’s Day. Mothers have always been highly regarded in all cultures. The Ancient Romans had a festival known as Hilaria, during which children took presents to the temple of the “Mother of the Gods”. The Christian Church adopted this idea and called it Mothering Sunday. However, over the years the custom was gradually forgotten and almost disappeared by the end of the 19th century. Born in 1864 in Virginia, USA, Anna Jarvis was a school teacher and believed children should show gratitude to their mothers for all their love and care. Encouraged by a friend, she wrote to thousands of important people---politicians, churchmen, doctors, city officials---and asked them to support her ideas: a special day of the year for thanking mothers. In 1910 the Governor of West Virginia introduced Mother’s Day into the state. The date chosen was May 10---the second Sunday in May, which is still observed in America today. This date was chosen because May 10 was the date on which in 1908 Anna Jarvis’s mother died. In 1914 President Woodrow Wilson made May 10 the official date for Mother’s Day throughout the United States. Soon there was a Mother’s Day International Association and the custom began to be adopted in many countries of the world. Anna Jarvis, a sad and disillusioned woman died in 1948. The custom she had worked so hard to establish and which had become almost universal had lost its original purpose. It had been taken over by business. As with Christmas, the giving of presents and the sending of cards had become a multi-million-dollar industry.
