Have you ever heard of the online topic “20 minutes for parks” It’s all about the idea that spending just 20 minutes in a park daily can help lower stress, no matter how you spend that time. This year, a trend (趋势) is rising in China—young people are choosing to hang out in parks more often.
Huang Bingbing, from Shenzhen, is one of them. Three years back, she started going to the small park downstairs from her office for lunch breaks on weekdays. “On that piece of grass, I could connect with living plants and animals. It allowed me to clear my mind and recover (恢复) from the stress of work,” Huang explained. Being introverted (内向的), she finds parks to be perfect relaxing places for people like her.
However, parks are also shared spaces. They’re different from shopping malls and cinemas, according to a young stage designer Liu Xi, who sees parks as places that go against consumerism (消费主义).
“In parks, people can walk, boat, read under the trees, or simply be lost in thought on a bench. Parks offer anon-consumerist environment where people can find joy without opening their wallets,” Liu explained.
Cheng Yuyan, a 25-year-old founder of the Douban interest group “We Love Strolling in the Park”, saw something interesting during her visits to parks in Japan. She noticed that local people gave away park benches with their names on them. What’s more, many parks offered guidebooks about the history, geography and blooming (开花) schedules of the plants.
Cheng believes people can feel more connected to parks by building a sense of ownership. She plans to encourage members of her Douban group to do similar things. “I hope our group takes more social responsibility. Each of us can contribute to the parks and our city,” she said.

Have you ever bought “malatang toys” from the Gansu Provincial Museum They are a series of Food-themed toys inspired (启发) by Tianshui malatang, showing the local special food culture. Such cultural and creative products have once again drawn the attention of the nation. Thousands of visitors flocked to (涌向) museums, buying products, taking photos, visiting the exhibits (展览) quickly and then heading home.
Some think that if people are just drawn to these products and only quickly look through exhibits, they will miss out on deeper learning. However, I believe that even a short look at the exhibitions can be observation (观察). When people are interested in these new products, they are more likely to remember some sides of the museums and explore the stories behind the cultural relics (文物).
Consider the famous bronze sculpture (青铜雕塑) known Galloping Horse Treading on a Flying Swallow (马踏飞燕). It is the most famous one of the Gansu Provincial Museum’s collection, showing the advanced technology of the Han Dynasty. A toy based on this sculpture became very popular for its humorous design, attracting many to see it in person. Since 2023, the Gansu Provincial Museum has drawn over 3.1 million visitors. Although many came just to take photos of the bronze horse, it still left a lasting impression (印象). What’s more, many became curious and looked for its history, such as how its name was given by GuoMoruo during his 1971 visit.

◆Shadow-stick method (方法)
First, find a stick. Plant it upright in the ground. Then put a rock on the ground to mark the tip (尖端) of the stick’s shadow (影子). And wait for about 15-20 minutes. Take another rock and mark the new location of the tip of the stick’s shadow. Draw a straight line between the rocks. This line should extend (延伸) through the top of the spoon until you reach a star of similar brightness. The North Star sits at the end of it. When you’re facing the North Star, you’re facing true north.
