Have you ever wondered how plants and animals live This is where the idea of a food chain comes into play. A food chain is a step-by-step order that explains how energy moves from one living thing to another. It shows how plants, animals, and even tiny things are connected.
The food chain begins with the producers (plants). Without plants, no other living thing could live because they produce the energy for all other living things. And plants use sunlight to make their own food. Animals that eat plants are called herbivores (食草动物), like rabbits and deer. Herbivores are at the second level of the food chain.
Some animals, like foxes and eagles, eat herbivores. These animals are called carnivores (食肉动物). They are at the third level of the food chain. Some carnivores, such as lions and sharks, are at the very top of the food chain. They have no natural enemies. They help control the number of animals below them in the food chain.
If one part of the food chain is broken, it influences everything else. For example, if grass dies because there is little or no rain in a season, rabbits won’t have food. Without rabbits, foxes will have less food to eat. Then the terrible results will continue on and on. That’s why we need to take care of the environment. When the food chain is stable, nature stays balanced and healthy.
By studying the food chain, scientists can better understand the influence of human activities on the environment. Besides, the food chain can guide us in making wise decisions about nature.
23. What is Paragraph 1 mainly about
A. The steps of the food chain. B. The problem of the food chain.
C. The order of the food chain. D. The meaning of the food chain.
24. How does the food chain work
①Herbivores eat producers. ②Carnivores eat herbivores. ③Producers use sunlight to make food.
A. ③→①→② B. ③→②→① C. ①→③→② D. ②→③→①
25. What will happen if grass dies in the food chain
A. There will be little rain. B. Rabbits will be better protected.
C. Foxes will lose their food. D. The number of deer will grow.
26. What does the underlined word “stable” in Paragraph 4 probably mean
A. Easy to break. B. Full of producers. C. Strong and unchanging. D. Bad for animals.
D
It’s common that parents and children disagree with each other. That’s what we call conflicts (冲突). Some of the conflicts are small and easy to end. Others may need parents to take action and help. To someone’s surprise, by solving them together, family conflicts can help children learn important life skills.
Some simple childhood games show how conflict and repair work. For example, in peek-a-boo, a baby might feel a little unhappy and worried when he can’t see his parent. But when the parent returns, everything is OK. As children grow older, they play games like hide and seek or tag. There are small moments of upset followed by great fun and joy. These games help children prepare for all kinds of problems in the future.
As children grow up, they develop their life skills by working through conflicts. When a conflict is too serious for a child, parents may step in. To set a good example, parents could try to remain cool first—don’t be too excited or angry. Next, they can say some kind and nice things to make children feel better. Now here comes the chance for parents and children to sit down. Then they can have a face-to-face communication. This helps them rebuild the love and trust for each other. In this way, children learn that sometimes things go wrong. But if they deal with them properly, they can always rebuild healthy and strong relationships with others.
A healthy process of going through conflict and repair with their parents promises children’s happiness and social success in the future.
27. Why are family conflicts helpful according to Paragraph 1
A. Because they can help parents learn.
B. Because they can teach children skills.
C. Because they can solve parents’ problems.
D. Because they can bring family to an agreement.
28. How does the writer tell the conflict and repair work in Paragraph 2
A. By telling stories. B. By showing facts. C. By listing numbers. D. By giving examples.
29. What do parents do first when children can’t solve conflicts
A. Walk with them. B. Make children happy.
C. Say nice words. D. Cool themselves down.
30. What can be the best title for the text

◆ What was your favorite part of this experience
Jason: Honestly, my favorite part has been seeing the kids enjoy sports together. Often, I see a kid out there using the sports things. 33
Emma: I loved working with my friends to make the playground livelier. We spent hours painting. We were all so proud of the result. 34 Even when we were tired, we kept going because we knew the kids would love it. It’s amazing to see how happy they are now.
◆ Any advice for people who want to help their community
Jason: Start with something small but meaningful.
