Your teacher asks you to collect your classmates’ opinions about their favorite school lunches. After asking everyone, you have collected a lot of data (数据) or information and aren’t sure how to organize it. Creating a chart (图表) can be a great way to organize and share your data.
Bar chart
A bar chart has a horizontal axis (横轴) and a vertical axis (竖轴). It has a title that explains what it shows, and different bars are used to show different amount (量). The vertical axis expresses the amount and the horizontal axis suggests the kinds of data.
Pie chart
A pie chart helps organize and show data as a percent of a whole. True to the name, it looks a bit like a pie and uses a circle to show the whole. The different pieces of the pie are different sizes depending on how much of the whole pie they show. Each piece is labeled to show what it means.
Line chart
Line charts are used to show changes to numbers over time. They show what we call continuous data. The different data points are then joined up with straight lines, so we can look at the trend it shows.
Flow chart
A flow chart shows the different steps in something using boxes and arrows (箭头). It can often have many different directions and different ways. Flow charts can be great for explaining a huge process by breaking it down into different steps.
24. Why do we create a chart according to the passage
A. To collect data. B. To organize and share data.

The Taklamakan Desert, known as the “Sea of Death”, is the biggest desert in China and the second largest moving desert in the world. It covers 337,600 square kilometers and now has a 3,046-kilometer-long sand-blocking belt (防沙带) around it. The belt is the longest in the world and is completed by planting desert poplar trees and red willows in Yutian County.
The project of building the sand-blocking belt faces many problems. As we all know, the desert is very large. It covers 76% of Xinjiang’s desert area, and its sand dunes (沙丘) are very tall, some reaching as high as 300 meters. So more time, money, and effort are required. The dry climate add more challenges. There is only 50 millimeters of rain in the desert each year, and over 2,500 millimeters of water are lost through evaporation (蒸发). Because there is not enough water, plants are hard to grow. Another problem is that the Taklamakan Desert is one of the most active areas for sandstorms in China.
Even with these problems, finishing this sand-blocking belt is a big success. Experts say it is a great achievement in human history, and people’s hard work pays off. The sand-blocking belt protects oases (areas with water and plants) from sandstorms, improves the local environment, and supports farming. It also shows China’s strong skills in managing large environmental projects.
A local farmer said he was happy about the project and hoped it would continue to help fight desertification—the process of becoming a desert. In the coming years, Xinjiang will continue to expand the sand-blocking belt to bring 23, 400 square kilometers of desert land back to life by 2030.
28. How long is the sand-blocking belt around the Taklamakan Desert

①Can you imagine a doctor performing a surgery (手术) on a patient thousands of kilometers away It seems to only happen in science fiction. However, a recent surgery done by doctors in Chengdu has shown the possibility in real life. Using a robotic technology, the doctors saved a patient in Lhasa (拉萨). With the development of AI-powered remote (远程的) surgery, modern healthcare has changed in a big way.
②AI played an important part in this surgery. By studying tons of medical data (数据), AI helps doctors plan the surgery, predict problems that could happen, and find the solutions.
③During the surgery, AI also tells the doctors the patient’s necessary information, like heart rate, blood pressure and oxygen levels. If anything of the patient goes wrong, it can warn the medical team and suggest changes to the surgery plan.
④Another key role in this surgery was supercomputing technology. Remote surgeries need fast data transmission (传送), as even small delays (延迟) can be dangerous. Supercomputing can quickly deal with a lot of data, making sure that the surgery pictures are clear and that the doctors’ orders are followed at once. The two-way network delay in this surgery was only 40 milliseconds, thanks to powerful supercomputers.
⑤The robot used in this surgery does an excellent job. It has one arm and one hole, which makes the cut smaller, making less pain and speeding up the process for the patient to get better. It also increases the chances of a successful surgery and lowers the risk of accidents.
⑥This kind of surgery is a huge excitement, especially for people in remote areas. It means that patients don’t have to travel far for good medical care, saving time and being treated in time.
⑦And for places with fewer doctors, this kind of surgery also brings good news as doctors from bigger cities can help with surgeries and train local doctors. This kind of surgery is important for improving healthcare everywhere.
36. How does the writer lead into AI-powered remote surgery
A. By giving an example. B. By telling a story.
C. By giving reasons. D. By listing numbers.
37. Which of the following question is answered in Paragraph 4
A. Where was the AI-powered remote surgery performed
B. Why does the surgery need the help of supercomputer
C. When is the best time for the supercomputer to deal with the data
D. How’s the normal computer different from the supercomputer
38. What can we infer about AI-powered remote surgery from the passage
A. No matter how far the place is, this kind of surgery can reach.
B. AI can warn the doctors if anything goes wrong with the patient.
C. The doctors in Lhasa might improve their skills through this kind of surgery.
D. The patient in Lhasa may get better a little slower through this kind of surgery.
39. Which of the following shows the structure of this passage

We can’t live without five basic senses—sight, smell, hearing, taste and touch. ___40___ But a recent study found that our sense of smell is far more powerful than we think.
The study was carried out by a team of scientists from the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences in China and the Ohio State University in the US. The team first developed a tool that could send smells into the human nose. They then asked 229 volunteers to smell four different scents (气味) while wearing the tool. ___41___ Each time, the volunteers were required to smell them with one sniff (嗅). Two scents were given one after the other with a short break in between.
Surprisingly, the scientists found that even though the break was only 0.06 seconds, the volunteers could still tell different scents. They could even point out the order in which the scents appeared. However, an eye blink (眨眼) takes about 0.18 seconds. ___42___
The finding further showed how special our sense of smell is. ___43___ For example, it can increase the risk of heart problems by 30 percent.
___44___ When we smell something, the “message” goes to the olfactory bulb (嗅球). Then the “message” is directly sent to the brain areas that make memories and feelings. However, our other four senses need to make a stop at the thalamus (下丘脑), before becoming a part of a memory.
A. Smell is not usually considered to be very strong.
B. Also, smells often bring back old memories faster than the other senses.
C. These scents smelled like apple, lemon, onion and flower.
D. Which sense do you think is the most often used in our daily life
E. In fact, studies have found that losing smell can lead to over 100 illnesses.

If you can create a piece of work to let the whole world know more about China, what would it be Here are three new pieces of works that are welcomed not only at home but abroad.
Wang Yixi and his team drew a Chinese ink painting that caught the world’s eye. Why It’s not just a normal ink painting but the one with chemical elements (元素). How fun is that! They drew this painting for a science magazine to show China’s latest scientific achievements. “Connecting science with traditional painting is something we’ve never seen! Through Wang’s work, we are not only clear about the latest science but also it opens a window for us to get to know about Chinese art.” David from England mentioned.
A research team led by Wang Dongbo from Nanjing Agricultural University rolled out (推出) Xunzi, a large language model (LLM). Wang Dongbo said the large language model was named after Xunzi because Xunzi was a pioneer in spreading Chinese thoughts and language. When asked why Wang and his team made LLM, he pointed out, “With this LLM, ancient Chinese texts can be reached by more Chinese and people from other countries in a completely new way. We encourage more people to understand traditional Chinese culture.”
Li Junfei and his team amazed the world with the Eiffel Tower (埃菲尔铁塔) made of bread in the World Skills Competition. What makes Li’s Eiffel Tower different is that he used mortise-and-tenon joints (榫卯结构) which was often used in ancient Chinese architecture (建筑). Only having a great idea is not enough, Li and his team also tried many ways to change the bread into something as hard as biscuits so that it can support the building of the tower. “The French judges have no idea what mortise-and-tenon joints are. But after seeing my Eiffel Tower, they said they would like to know more!” Li says with a big smile.

【答案】例文:
Here are two interesting pictures. The boy wants to pick the fruit. When he sees the big stone as an obstacle, he feels upset. However, when he regards it as a stepping stone, he can reach for the fruit.
I come to realize an important lesson: our attitude determines how we handle difficulties. Challenges and obstacles are part of life, but the key is to change our perspective. Instead of giving up, we should focus on how to solve problems and turn them into steps toward success. From my own experience, when I failed an important exam, I was upset at first. But later, I treated it as a chance to find my weaknesses and improve, which helped me grow. Therefore, we should learn to face difficulties positively and fight on bravely.
