One Friday, I decided to tell her a story about my childhood. I told her that I felt lonely when
I was with my classmates, and I thought only my teachers liked me. I also told her that every day

①The world has done a lot to protect elephants, but many of them
are still losing lives for their ivory (象牙). At the end of the 1970s, over
1.3 million elephants walked around Africa (非洲). But today, there are
only 450, 000 left. This is mainly because of people’s hunting for ivory.
With need for ivory in markets growing, people keep killing elephants.
Now at least 20,000 African elephants die each year.
②People call ivory “white gold”. Because of its unusual look, people often use it to
make expensive things, such as jewellery (珠宝) and works of art. And the ivory material itself
is so strong that people can store it for long. That’s why many people are willing to pay high
prices for things made of ivory.
③However, no matter how expensive the ivory is, it’s wrong of humans to kill elephants.
So some scientists are working hard on making the same beauty of ivory with no killing.
④Thadd a Rath, from a college of Austria has created (制造) the man-made ivory called
“Digory” with her team. The chemical structure (化学结构) of Digory is completely different
from that of the natural ivory, but it looks so real that it is hard to tell the difference by eye.
⑤Another scientist, Fritz Vollrath from the UK, who is also working to protect elephants
felt excited that Digory could save many elephants from danger. He said, “We still need to do
more work to improve Digory so that people around the world will accept Digory and like to
buy and use it. And I believe that technology (技术) like this will help protect more wildlife.”
56. How does the writer tell us elephants are in danger in Paragraph 1
A. By showing us numbers. B. By introducing Africa.
C. By telling us a story. D. By giving an example.
57. What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 2 mean
A. The elephant. B. The work of art. C. The ivory. D. The expensive thing.
58. Which of the following does Fritz Vollrath agree

D. Scientists have already found ways to make better Digory.

Sugar painting, as the name means, is a painting made of sugar. It’s
the sugar for us to taste, and the painting for us to enjoy.
Since the Warring States Period, people loved sweets and had
different ways of making sugar. In the Tang Dynasty, people greatly
improved skills of sugar making. So sugar, the rare thing that once could
only enter homes of the kings, also went into common people’s homes.
During the Song and Yuan Dynasties, people became less interested in
only tasting sweetness. In the Ming Dynasty, some people added pictures with good luck to the
bowl of sugar, and sugar painting came out.
Sugar painting is different from other paintings. Sugar painters use syrup (糖浆) as the
material, a spoon as the “paintbrush”, and a smooth table as the “paper”. To make syrup, they have
to make sugar hot before painting. Since syrup may become hard if it cools, the painters have to
make the work very quickly. They move the spoon full of syrup up and down, left and right. Soon
a sugar painting is finished.
However, it’s a pity that this art is dying recently. The sugar painting that used to be rich in
shapes (形状) has become poorer and poorer because of fewer needs. What’s worse, only a few
old sugar painters are willing to pass on this kind of art.
For most people, painting is a kind of art and difficult to understand. However, sugar painting
has entered people’s daily lives. Through it, we may see the spiritual (精神的) support of people
across centuries. Now, sugar painting has been an intangible cultural heritage (非物质文化遗产)
in China. So we Chinese should remember, miss and pass on the art till forever.
61. What does the underlined word “common” in Paragraph 2 probably mean
A. 普通的 B. 热情的 C. 可怜的 D. 特殊的
62. What is Paragraph 2 mainly about
A. Why people were interested in sugar painting.
B. How sugar making became sugar painting art.
C. What people thought of sugar painting in the past.
D. How people made sugar in different ways in old days.
63. Why should sugar painters make the work very quickly
A. To show their excellent skills. B. To stop syrup becoming hard.
C. To protect the spoon and the table. D. To save people’s waiting time.
64. How might the writer feel about today’s sugar painting according to Paragraph 4
A. Hopeful. B. Angry. C. Unclear. D. Worried.
65. Which can be the best title for the article
A. History of sugar painting
B. Improving the taste of sugar painting
C. Learning about the art of sugar painting
D. Ways to change the future of sugar painting

According to the World Health Organization ( 组 织 ), just like smoking,
loneliness can lead to people’s health problems. In many countries, even young
people are now feeling lonely. What can we do to fight this problem
Asa Koski is a social scientist in Lulea, Sweden (瑞典). She believes one way is to encourage
(鼓励) people to say hello to others when they meet. She recently started the “Sag hej! (Say hi)”
project. Workers put up advertisements about the project on buses and teachers offer different
lessons to students at schools to encourage people to communicate with each other more. Lulea is
near the Arctic Circle (北极圈). Winters there are long and cold. The temperature can drop to
-15℃ almost all year around. But Koski doesn’t think the weather alone has made young Swedes
feel lonely. People like playing games on mobile phones for too many hours. It’s a far bigger
reason.
An American girl Lauren Ell first came to Sweden as an exchange student in 2014. “Making
friends with Swedish students is almost not possible.” she says. Many of her classmates would go
home after school and play video games. Ell has lived in Sweden for ten years now, but she still
feels like she is an outsider. She thinks the “Sag hej!” project could be a good way to help with the
problem. “I’m very happy to see many people put down their phones and are glad to talk to each
other now.” Lauren Ell said.
Teachers in Lulea have reported that the project has already worked. More and more students
are willing to say “Hi” when they meet each other every day.
Koski says, “Saying hello to someone sends out a message that you’re willing to stop and
chat or to help if there’s a problem. For some people, that can really help a lot.”

九、书面表达
Dear Sandy,
I’m very glad to get your letter. My favourite season is autumn. I like it because Mid-Autumn
Festival is in this season. My family and I eat moon cakes and enjoy the full moon at the festival.
It is cool and sunny in autumn and the sky is blue. If you walk around my school, you can see
leaves on the trees turn brown or yellow and fall into piles upon the ground. At this time of year,
our school looks so beautiful.
During this season, I can go for different activities with my classmates. Our school holds a
sports meeting every autumn. My classmates and I always take an active part in it. We have fun
chatting with each other and cheering for our friends. Sometimes, we go cycling in the park. How
happy we are!
Hope to get your letter soon.
Yours,
Joan
